Questions & Answers about Pelkäätkö sä mua?
Why is the word for "me" here mua instead of mun or mä?
Mua is the spoken Finnish (puhekieli) version of minua, which is the partitive form of "I". The verb pelätä (to be afraid of) always requires its object to be in the partitive case, because fearing is treated as an ongoing emotion rather than a completed action.
Why include the pronoun sä when the verb pelkäät already has the "you" ending?
In standard written Finnish, pronouns for "I" and "you" are often dropped because the verb ending already tells us who is acting (for example, simply asking Pelkäätkö minua?). However, in spoken Finnish, it is very common to keep the shortened pronouns like sä and mä in the sentence.
How do we get the verb form pelkäät from the dictionary form pelätä?
Pelätä is a Type 4 verb. To find its stem, you drop the -tä ending and double the last vowel. It also undergoes consonant gradation: the weak l in the dictionary form becomes a strong lk in the conjugated stem. This gives us the base pelkää-, to which you add the "you" ending -t and the question particle -kö.
