Questions & Answers about Minä nousen nyt.
What is the dictionary form of nousen and how is it formed?
The dictionary form is nousta (to get up). It is a Type 3 verb because it ends in two consonants plus a vowel (-sta). To make the "I" form, remove the -ta to get the stem nous-, add an e, and finally add the personal ending -n to make nousen.
Is there any consonant gradation (letters changing or doubling) in nousen?
No. Consonant gradation in Type 3 verbs usually involves strengthening stems, but it only affects the letters k, p, and t. Because the stem nous- does not contain a changing k, p, or t, the stem stays exactly the same for all persons.
Why does this translate to "I am getting up" instead of "I get up"?
Finnish does not have a separate continuous tense (like the English "am doing"). The single word nousen can translate to "I get up", "I am getting up", or even "I will get up". The word nyt (now) gives us the clue that the action is happening at this very moment.
Can I drop the word minä and just say nousen nyt?
