Building Bigger Numbers
To form numbers from 21 to 99 in Finnish, simply combine the tens and units into one long word. There are no spaces or hyphens.
| Tens | Units | Compound Number |
|---|---|---|
| kaksikymmentä (20) | yksi (1) | kaksikymmentäyksi (21) |
| kolmekymmentä (30) | viisi (5) | kolmekymmentäviisi (35) |
When stating precise amounts, use tasan (exactly).
| The book costs exactly twenty-one euros. | Kirja maksaa tasan kaksikymmentäyksi euroa. |
| There are thirty-five birds at the market square. | Torilla on kolmekymmentäviisi lintua. |
Talking About Age
To express someone's age, use vuotta vanha (years old). The word vuosi (year) takes the partitive singular form vuotta because it follows a number greater than one.
If you aren't sure of the exact number, use noin (about).
| He is about sixty-two years old. | Hän on noin kuusikymmentäkaksi vuotta vanha. |
| I am ninety-nine years old! | Minä olen yhdeksänkymmentäyhdeksän vuotta vanha! |
Summing Things Up
When calculating prices or counting objects, use yhteensä (in total).
| The books cost about forty-five euros in total. | Kirjat maksavat yhteensä noin neljäkymmentäviisi euroa. |
| Here are exactly thirty-two apples in total. | Täällä on yhteensä tasan kolmekymmentäkaksi omenaa. |
Remember that any noun following a number greater than one must be in the partitive case, whether you are counting euros, apples, or tomatoes!
| The man buys fifty-four tomatoes. | Mies ostaa viisikymmentäneljä tomaattia. |
