Questions & Answers about Uskrs slavimo u crkvi i kod kuće.
Why doesn't the word Uskrs change its ending if it is the direct object?
It actually is in the accusative case! Because Uskrs is an inanimate masculine noun (a concept or thing, not a living being), its accusative form looks exactly the same as its nominative form. If we were celebrating a specific person, the ending would change.
Why do we use the preposition u for church (u crkvi) but kod for home (kod kuće)?
In Croatian, kod kuće is a fixed phrase that specifically means "at home." The preposition kod always requires the genitive case, which is why kuća becomes kuće. For most other locations, like the church, you use u or na with the locative case to show where an action is happening.
Could I just say u kući instead of kod kuće?
You can, but it changes the meaning slightly. U kući literally means "inside the house" with a focus on the physical building, while kod kuće means "at home" in a general, comfortable sense. This is exactly like the English distinction between being "in the house" and being "at home."
