Questions & Answers about Baš sam sretan zbog tebe!
Why is baš used here instead of jako or vrlo?
While jako (very) or vrlo (very) would also be perfectly correct, baš is extremely common in everyday spoken Croatian to add emotion or emphasis. Here, it translates best to "really" or "so" (as in, "I am so happy").
Would a female speaker say this sentence the exact same way?
No. Sretan is the masculine form of the adjective for "happy". A female speaker would need to use the feminine form and say: Baš sam sretna zbog tebe!
Why do we use zbog to mean "for" instead of za?
In English, you say you are happy "for" someone, but Croatian expresses this as being happy "because of" someone. The preposition zbog means "because of" and always takes the Genitive case.
Why is it tebe and not the short pronoun te?
Tebe is the full form of the pronoun ti (you) in the Genitive case. Whenever a pronoun comes immediately after a preposition like zbog, you must use its full, standalone form, never the short (enclitic) form.
