The preposition about ('o')

The Preposition "o" (About)

To express what you are talking, reading, learning, or thinking about, use the preposition o followed by the locative case. It is frequently paired with verbs like raspravljati (to discuss), razgovarati (to converse), čitati (to read), učiti (to learn), and razmišljati (to think).

Regular Nouns in the Locative

In the locative case, most masculine nouns take the ending -u, while most feminine nouns ending in -a change their ending to -i.

If a feminine noun ends in -ka, the k changes to c before the -i (for example, politika becomes politici).

We often discuss politics.
Često raspravljamo o politici.
My brother likes to discuss sport.
Moj brat voli raspravljati o sportu.
We learn about nature at school.
U školi učimo o prirodi.

Feminine Nouns Ending in a Consonant

A special group of feminine nouns ends in a consonant instead of -a. This includes many abstract concepts like umjetnost (art), povijest (history), ljubav (love), znanost (science), and budućnost (future).

To form the locative case for these nouns, simply add -i to the end of the word.

Today we are learning about culture and art.
Danas učimo o kulturi i umjetnosti.
They are talking about love and the future.
Oni razgovaraju o ljubavi i budućnosti.
These books talk about history and politics.
Ove knjige govore o povijesti i politici.
