Prepositions of Direction
To express movement or focus towards a destination, Croatian uses the prepositions prema and k (or ka). Both require the dative case.
For most regular nouns, dative singular endings match the locative:
- Masculine and neuter nouns take -u.
- Feminine nouns ending in -a take -i.
prema means "towards" or "in the direction of" and is widely used for places, objects, and abstract concepts.
| My father is walking towards the center. | Moj otac hoda prema centru. |
| The policeman is waiting and looking towards the intersection. | Policajac čeka i gleda prema križanju. |
| This bus is driving straight towards the airport. | Ovaj autobus vozi ravno prema aerodromu. |
Dative Plural
When moving towards multiple things, use the dative plural. Endings usually contain -ma:
- -ama for most feminine nouns (zvijezda → zvijezdama)
- -ima for most masculine and neuter nouns (vrata → vratima)
| Their plane is flying towards the stars. | Njihov avion leti prema zvijezdama. |
| His step towards the door is slow. | Njegov korak prema vratima je spor. |
Using "k" and "ka"
The preposition k also means "to" or "towards," most frequently used when heading toward a person or a specific point.
It becomes ka if the following word begins with the consonants k, g, or h to make pronunciation easier.
| No one is going to the policeman. | Nitko ne ide k policajcu. |
| Our dog is running towards the house. | Naš pas trči ka kući. |
| They are going to the light at the end of the street. | Idu k svjetlu na kraju ulice. |
