Questions & Answers about نعم الخلق الأمانة.
Why are there two nouns after نعم in this sentence?
The verb نعم is a special, fixed verb of praise that needs two parts to complete its meaning. First, it takes a general definite noun to state the category being praised (here, الخلق, meaning the trait). Second, it takes the specific thing you are praising within that category (الأمانة, meaning trustworthiness).
What case endings (harakat) should I use on the ends of الخلق and الأمانة?
Both take a damma (the nominative case). الخلقُ takes it because it is the grammatical subject of the verb نعم. الأمانةُ also takes a damma because it acts as the main subject of the overall statement. A good rule of thumb for this structure is that both the general category and the specific praised item are nominative.
Does الخلق mean any kind of physical trait or characteristic?
No, الخلق specifically refers to moral character, manners, or ethics. It shares a root with the plural word أخلاق (morals). You use it here because trustworthiness is a moral virtue, rather than a physical trait like being tall.
How would I change this sentence to say the exact opposite?
You would replace the verb of praise نعم with the classical verb of blame, بئس (what a terrible...). If you wanted to say 'What a terrible trait betrayal is', using the opposite of trustworthiness, you would say بئس الخلق الخيانة.
