### Alarms and Naps

Sometimes we only need a short nap (**غفوة**) to refresh ourselves. When it's time to get up, an alarm clock (**منبه**) does the job. 

Pay attention to the verb **أيقظ**. This means "to wake someone up" and is used when an outside force (like an alarm or another person) causes the waking.

### Bedding and Restlessness

A well-made bed requires a quilt (**لحاف**) and a bedsheet (**ملاءة**), but comfort doesn't guarantee good sleep. 

You might have to deal with someone who snores (**شخر**) or find yourself tossing and turning (**تقلب**). The pattern of the verb **تقلب** perfectly describes a repeated, restless motion.

### The Negative Past Perfect ("Had Not")

To express that an action *had not* happened before another past event took place (such as "he had not slept yet when the alarm rang"), Arabic uses a specific combination of verbs and particles.

Combine the negative particle **لم** with the present-tense form of the verb "to be" (like **يكن** for "he" or **أكن** for "I"), followed by **قد**, and the main verb in the past tense: 

- **لم يكن قد نام** (He had not slept)
- **لم أكن قد نمت** (I had not slept)
