Vietnamese technical and academic vocabulary grows by combining several resources: established Sino-Vietnamese morphemes, ordinary Vietnamese phrase order, productive elements such as học and hóa, translation loans, international borrowings, and abbreviations. A long term may therefore contain smaller units built by different rules.
For example, ngôn ngữ học tính toán “computational linguistics” contains the established field name ngôn ngữ học “linguistics,” followed by tính toán “computational.” It is more useful to see that nested structure than to translate four written syllables independently. This page focuses on how specialist terms are built and used; deciding when a syllable boundary is a real morpheme boundary belongs on Avoiding False Morpheme Segmentation.
The main construction patterns
| Pattern | Examples | Communicative job |
|---|---|---|
| domain + học | sinh học, xã hội học, ngôn ngữ học | names an academic discipline |
| base + hóa | số hóa, tự động hóa, thương mại hóa | names a change or the process causing it |
| head + field | công nghệ sinh học, khoa học dữ liệu | places a general domain inside a specialization |
| head + property/function | trí tuệ nhân tạo, năng lượng tái tạo | narrows a concept by type or function |
| person-labeling pattern | nhà nghiên cứu, lập trình viên, chuyên gia dữ liệu | names a professional role |
| abbreviation | CNTT, AI | compresses an already established expression |
| international borrowing | gen, laser | integrates a term used by a specialist community |
Technical vocabulary is not generated by one universal template. Writers choose among these resources according to disciplinary convention. A term becomes reliable because a community uses it consistently, not merely because every part has a dictionary gloss.
Naming fields with học
In names of disciplines, học often follows the domain: sinh học “biology,” tâm lý học “psychology,” xã hội học “sociology,” and ngôn ngữ học “linguistics.” A further modifier can then specialize the whole field.
Chị ấy nghiên cứu ngôn ngữ học tính toán và xử lý ngôn ngữ tự nhiên cho tiếng Việt.
She researches computational linguistics and natural-language processing for Vietnamese.
Phòng thí nghiệm này tập trung vào sinh học phân tử.
This laboratory focuses on molecular biology.
The parse is [ngôn ngữ học] [tính toán] and [sinh học] [phân tử]. In both, the established field comes first and the specialization follows. English often puts the modifier first (computational linguistics, molecular biology), so copying English order syllable by syllable produces the wrong Vietnamese structure.
Some field names do not use học at all: kỹ thuật can mean engineering/technique, y học means medicine as a field, and công nghệ thông tin means information technology. Learn the accepted disciplinary label, not an invented uniform formula.
Creating process terms with hóa
Hóa is especially productive in policy, engineering, economics, and the social sciences. It can create a verb or a process noun without changing form.
Bệnh viện đang số hóa hồ sơ để bác sĩ tra cứu nhanh hơn.
The hospital is digitizing records so that doctors can retrieve them more quickly.
Việc tự động hóa một số công đoạn đã giảm thời gian sản xuất.
Automating some stages has reduced production time.
Đang makes số hóa clearly verbal. Việc packages tự động hóa as an activity. In quá trình đô thị hóa “the process of urbanization,” the head quá trình does the same nominal work. Vietnamese does not need separate inflectional forms corresponding to English digitize/digitization.
Not every adjective accepts hóa productively. Đơn giản hóa “simplify” and hiện đại hóa “modernize” are established; an improvised form modeled on any English -ize verb may be opaque or comic.
Nested compounds and semantic heads
Long technical expressions are usually layered rather than flat. Find the broad category first, then ask what narrows it.
Nhóm đang xây dựng một mô hình ngôn ngữ lớn cho tài liệu y khoa.
The team is building a large language model for medical documents.
The broad category is mô hình “model.” Ngôn ngữ specifies its domain, and lớn modifies the larger unit mô hình ngôn ngữ. Similarly, công nghệ sinh học is a kind of công nghệ, while khoa học dữ liệu is a kind of khoa học.
Công nghệ sinh học đang góp phần phát triển năng lượng tái tạo.
Biotechnology is contributing to the development of renewable energy.
The internal pieces may themselves have different histories: công nghệ is learned vocabulary, sinh học contains productive học, and the complete modern term follows a Vietnamese head-first phrase pattern. The label “Sino-Vietnamese” does not require an entire multiword expression to preserve one historical order.
Conversion: one form, different syntactic jobs
Technical prose often uses the same form as a verb and a noun. Nghiên cứu can be “research” or “research/study,” and thiết kế can be “design” or “design.” Syntax tells you the role.
Nhóm đang nghiên cứu một loại pin mới.
The team is researching a new type of battery.
Nghiên cứu này đề xuất một thiết kế tiết kiệm năng lượng.
This study proposes an energy-efficient design.
In the first sentence, đang identifies a verb. In the second, nghiên cứu này is a noun phrase, while một thiết kế is counted as a noun. This zero conversion is typical of an analytic language: word class emerges from construction, not from a visible derivational ending.
Abbreviation and borrowing
Specialists shorten frequent terms. CNTT abbreviates công nghệ thông tin, while AI is the international initialism commonly used alongside trí tuệ nhân tạo. In a document for a broad audience, write the full expression at first mention and put the abbreviation after it.
Khoa Công nghệ thông tin (CNTT) sẽ mở một khóa học về trí tuệ nhân tạo (AI).
The Faculty of Information Technology (IT) will offer a course on artificial intelligence (AI).
Abbreviation changes length, not internal grammar. CNTT does not prove that each written letter corresponds to a freely usable morpheme. Borrowings such as gen and laser likewise enter established specialist usage; their spelling and pronunciation should be learned from Vietnamese practice rather than reconstructed from English.
Các nhà nghiên cứu dùng laser để phân tích mẫu vật.
The researchers use a laser to analyze the specimen.
In casual professional speech, international abbreviations and English terms may occur more often than in edited (formal) prose. The variation is real, but a learner should master the standard Vietnamese full term so that the audience and document type can determine the shorter choice.
A contrast map of word-building processes
| Form | Process | Correct unit to learn |
|---|---|---|
| xe đạp | native-style compounding | the entire name “bicycle” |
| học sinh | established learned compound | the person label “pupil” |
| hiện đại hóa | productive formation with hóa | [[hiện đại] hóa] |
| nho nhỏ | reduplication | an attenuated “rather small” |
| sạch sẽ | lexical expressive form | the conventional quality “clean/tidy” |
| công nghệ | established learned vocabulary | “technology” as a whole |
| kỹ thuật | established learned vocabulary | “technique/technical/engineering,” by context |
| cà phê | integrated borrowing | the whole loan “coffee” |
The identical spaces hide different structures. Technical reading improves when you test a plausible nested parse instead of assigning an English word to every syllable.
Short project discussion
A: Đề tài của nhóm là gì? B: Bọn mình xây dựng hệ thống dùng AI để phân loại tài liệu. A: Có phải nhóm sẽ tự động hóa toàn bộ quy trình không? B: Chưa. Trước mắt, hệ thống chỉ hỗ trợ kỹ thuật viên; chuyên gia vẫn kiểm tra kết quả.
A: What is your group's research topic? B: We're building a system that uses AI to classify documents. A: Will the group automate the entire process? B: Not yet. For now, the system only assists the technicians; specialists still check the results.
The technical terms encode different layers: AI abbreviates an international concept, tự động hóa names a process, kỹ thuật viên names an institutional role, and chuyên gia marks expertise. Substituting one productive element for another would change who or what is being described.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English modifier order
❌ Tôi học dữ liệu khoa học.
Wrong for ‘I study data science’: dữ liệu khoa học means ‘scientific data,’ not the field ‘data science.’
✅ Tôi học khoa học dữ liệu.
I study data science.
Find the Vietnamese head. Khoa học dữ liệu is a kind of science; dữ liệu khoa học is a kind of data.
2. Expanding every technical compound syllable by syllable
❌ Công nghệ có nghĩa là công việc và nghệ thuật.
Incorrect English-driven segmentation: công nghệ is the established word for technology, not a phrase meaning ‘work and art.’
✅ Công nghệ này giúp tiết kiệm điện.
This technology helps save electricity.
Morpheme history can explain a family, but current lexical meaning belongs to the conventional whole.
3. Inserting a modifier inside a fixed term
❌ Công ty phát triển công nghệ mới thông tin.
Incorrect for ‘new information technology’: mới splits the established term công nghệ thông tin.
✅ Công ty phát triển công nghệ thông tin mới.
The company is developing new information technology.
Keep the field label intact, then attach the adjective to the complete unit.
4. Treating a process form as if it required an English noun ending
❌ Sự hiện đại sự hóa cần nhiều vốn.
Incorrect: Vietnamese does not insert a separate noun-forming equivalent of English -ation inside hiện đại hóa.
✅ Quá trình hiện đại hóa cần nhiều vốn.
The modernization process requires substantial capital.
The unchanged form hiện đại hóa can name the process once syntax supplies quá trình or sự.
5. Assuming reduplication creates a technical plural
❌ Nho nhỏ nghĩa là nhiều mô hình nhỏ.
Incorrect: nho nhỏ changes degree or expressive tone; it does not make mô hình plural.
✅ Nhóm thử ba mô hình nho nhỏ trước khi mở rộng hệ thống.
The team tested three rather small models before scaling up the system.
The numeral ba supplies quantity. Reduplication has a different morphological job.
Key Takeaways
- Technical terms often contain nested compounds; identify the broad head before translating modifiers.
- Domain + học names many disciplines, while base + hóa names changes and processes.
- Forms such as nghiên cứu and thiết kế can change syntactic role without changing shape.
- Abbreviations and borrowings supplement Vietnamese formations but do not erase their register or structure.
- Community convention—not an English template—decides which coinage is accepted and how it is ordered.
