English often marks a change of word class with morphology—modern becomes modernize, and decide becomes decision. Vietnamese sometimes uses an overt element too, as in hiện đại hóa “modernize.” Very often, however, an unchanged form appears in more than one syntactic role: báo cáo can be a noun “report” or a verb “report,” and nghiên cứu can name “research/a study” or the activity “research.” This is commonly called conversion or zero derivation.
The label is useful, but the analysis is not always theoretically simple. Vietnamese word classes are identified largely by distribution, and some linguists analyze a flexible item as one broadly specified lexeme rather than deriving one category from another. Learners do not need to choose a theoretical camp. They do need to read the surrounding markers accurately.
This page covers unchanged category use. Abbreviations, Initialisms, and Contemporary Borrowing are reserved for the next page.
The form stays still; syntax does the work
Compare báo cáo in two sentences:
Bản báo cáo này thiếu số liệu của quý trước.
This report lacks data from the previous quarter.
Chiều mai tôi sẽ báo cáo kết quả với ban giám đốc.
Tomorrow afternoon I will report the results to the board of directors.
In the first sentence, báo cáo follows bản, a classifier-like noun used for documents, and it is modified by này: those are noun-phrase diagnostics. In the second, báo cáo follows future marker sẽ, takes an object kết quả, and combines with a recipient introduced by với: those are verb diagnostics. No suffix changes the form.
| Environment | Likely category/function | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| after a numeral/classifier | noun | một bản báo cáo |
| before a demonstrative | noun | nghiên cứu này |
| after đã, đang, sẽ, chưa | verb | đang nghiên cứu |
| before an object or complement | verb | thiết kế ứng dụng |
| after a head noun | nominal modifier or compound member | công ty công nghệ |
Common noun–verb flexibility
Sino-Vietnamese items are especially prominent in formal, administrative, academic, and professional vocabulary, though conversion is not limited to that stratum.
Nghiên cứu này theo dõi chất lượng không khí trong mười năm.
This study tracks air quality over ten years.
Nhóm chúng tôi đang nghiên cứu chất lượng không khí ở ba thành phố.
Our team is researching air quality in three cities.
Khách hàng gửi một yêu cầu hoàn tiền qua ứng dụng.
The customer sent a refund request through the app.
Khách hàng yêu cầu cửa hàng hoàn tiền ngay trong hôm nay.
The customer requested that the store issue the refund today.
Thiết kế này giúp người dùng tìm thông tin nhanh hơn.
This design helps users find information more quickly.
Công ty đang thiết kế một ứng dụng cho người khiếm thị.
The company is designing an app for visually impaired users.
The unchanged shapes do not eliminate grammatical categories. Một yêu cầu is a referential noun phrase; yêu cầu cửa hàng... predicates an act and selects a complement. Conversion is therefore best understood as zero overt derivation, not “Vietnamese has no parts of speech.”
Do not confuse conversion with predicative property words
Vietnamese property words such as đẹp, sạch, and hiện đại can normally serve as predicates without a copula:
Phòng họp mới sáng sủa, sạch sẽ và khá hiện đại.
The new meeting room is bright, clean, and fairly modern.
English requires “is,” but Vietnamese does not insert là before an ordinary property predicate. Some descriptions call this adjective–verb flexibility; others maintain a distinct adjective class with verbal-like predication. For learners, the operational rule is clear: predicate position alone does not prove that a new verb meaning has been derived.
In particular, hiện đại means “modern,” while hiện đại hóa overtly expresses “modernize.”
Thành phố đang hiện đại hóa hệ thống xe buýt công cộng.
The city is modernizing the public bus system.
Here -hóa is a productive Sino-Vietnamese word-forming element. This is overt derivation, so it is the opposite of the zero-marked pattern under discussion.
Conversion, compounding, and semantic heads
A form used inside a compound is not automatically converted. In xe đạp, xe is the semantic head: the referent is a type of vehicle, while đạp helps specify it as pedal-powered. The verbal origin or independent verbal use of đạp “pedal/kick” does not make the whole expression a verb.
Likewise, công ty công nghệ “technology company” places công nghệ after the head noun công ty. It is often most useful to analyze công nghệ as a nominal modifier or compound member, not to invent an adjective suffix that Vietnamese does not show.
Công ty công nghệ đó vừa công bố một thiết kế mới cho xe đạp điện.
That technology company has just announced a new design for electric bicycles.
A minimal map of the word-formation system
| Form | Analysis | Why it is not ordinary conversion |
|---|---|---|
| xe đạp | native compound | two lexical elements form a head-first vehicle noun |
| học sinh | Sino-Vietnamese compound | the whole lexical item means “student” |
| hiện đại hóa | overt derivation | -hóa visibly builds a “make/become” expression |
| nho nhỏ | reduplication | sound repetition softens the property “small” |
| sạch sẽ | lexicalized reduplicative | alternating sound structure contributes a conventional meaning |
| công nghệ | Sino-Vietnamese lexical item | its attributive use can be nominal modification, not a derived adjective |
| cà phê | borrowing | its history is loan adaptation, not category change |
| báo cáo | noun–verb conversion/polyfunctionality | the same form occurs in noun and verb environments |
Abbreviation and initialism shorten a longer name, while borrowing introduces material from another language. Those strategies can later interact with conversion, but they remain analytically distinct.
Borrowed forms can become flexible—but test the construction
In (informal/workplace) Vietnamese, borrowed email can name a message or be used verbally with a recipient:
Tôi đã nhận được email xác nhận của khách sạn.
I received the hotel's confirmation email.
Bạn email tài liệu cho tôi trước năm giờ nhé.
Email me the document before five, please.
This is genuine category flexibility in a modern loan. By contrast, đi cà phê means “go for coffee” through an elliptical social-activity construction. It is unsafe to conclude that every noun after đi has simply become a verb.
A natural workplace dialogue
— Anh đã cập nhật báo cáo chưa? — Rồi, bản cập nhật mới nằm trong thư mục chung; chiều nay tôi sẽ báo cáo các thay đổi.
— Have you updated the report yet? — Yes. The new update is in the shared folder; this afternoon I will report the changes.
The dialogue uses cập nhật after đã as a verb and after bản as a noun. It then uses báo cáo first as the object of cập nhật and later as a verb after sẽ. The unchanged forms are not ambiguous once their syntactic frames are visible.
Register and lexical growth
Conversion is especially efficient in news, technology, administration, and business because speakers can deploy an established form in a new syntactic frame without adding inflection. (Formal/news) usage favors Sino-Vietnamese items such as nghiên cứu, yêu cầu, hỗ trợ, and báo cáo. (Informal/workplace) speech more readily converts recent loans such as email.
Productivity does not eliminate convention. Some uses sound established; others sound jocular, promotional, or copied from English. When a dictionary and broad native usage do not support a conversion, choose an explicit construction such as thực hiện nghiên cứu “conduct research,” gửi email “send an email,” or an overt derivation with -hóa where appropriate.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding là before an ordinary verb because English uses “be.”
❌ Nhóm tôi là nghiên cứu thị trường Đông Nam Á.
Incorrect for ‘My team is researching the Southeast Asian market’: là cannot introduce the verb phrase this way.
✅ Nhóm tôi đang nghiên cứu thị trường Đông Nam Á.
My team is researching the Southeast Asian market.
The progressive marker đang identifies nghiên cứu as the predicate.
2. Adding là before a property predicate.
❌ Văn phòng mới là sạch sẽ và hiện đại.
Incorrect as a neutral description—ordinary property predicates do not need là.
✅ Văn phòng mới sạch sẽ và hiện đại.
The new office is clean and modern.
The repair follows Vietnamese predication rather than English copular syntax.
3. Treating every syllable inside a lexical compound as independently converted.
❌ Học sinh được hiểu bằng cách dịch riêng học rồi sinh trong câu này.
Incorrect analysis—the modern word học sinh should not be reconstructed each time from isolated syllable meanings.
✅ Học sinh lớp này đang chuẩn bị cho kỳ thi cuối năm.
The students in this class are preparing for the end-of-year exam.
Sino-Vietnamese morphemes participate in productive patterns, but established compounds have conventional meanings.
4. Assuming a bare property word automatically means a causative verb.
❌ Thành phố đang hiện đại hệ thống xe buýt.
Incorrect for ‘The city is modernizing the bus system’: hiện đại alone means ‘modern,’ not the causative verb.
✅ Thành phố đang hiện đại hóa hệ thống xe buýt.
The city is modernizing the bus system.
The overt element -hóa supplies the causative/change-of-state meaning.
5. Copying English compound order.
❌ Cô ấy làm việc cho một công nghệ công ty.
Incorrect—the English order ‘technology company’ has been copied directly.
✅ Cô ấy làm việc cho một công ty công nghệ.
She works for a technology company.
Vietnamese places the head công ty before the nominal modifier công nghệ in this construction.
Key Takeaways
Conversion lets one visible form occupy different syntactic frames without an overt derivational marker. Diagnose nouns through classifiers, demonstratives, and noun-phrase position; diagnose verbs through aspect markers, negation, and complements. Do not confuse zero derivation with ordinary property predication, compounding, reduplication, borrowing, or overt -hóa derivation. In Vietnamese, context does much of the work that affixes do in English.
