Multiple Topics

A Vietnamese clause can have more than one topic-like constituent before its main assertion. A broad time or place frame may come first, followed by a narrower person, object, or contrastive domain: Hôm qua, cuốn sách này thì tôi mới đọc được một nửa. Such clauses are layered, not scrambled. Their order reflects scope and discourse: the wider setting normally precedes the entity about which the comment is made.

Start from the neutral clause

Vietnamese still has a basic subject–verb–object order:

Tôi đọc sách.

I read books / I am reading a book.

If one particular book is already relevant, it can become an object topic:

Còn cuốn sách này thì tôi đã đọc được ba chương.

As for this book, I've read three chapters.

If the speaker also needs to delimit the time, the two left-edge constituents can be layered:

Hôm qua, cuốn sách này thì tôi mới đọc được một nửa.

Yesterday, as for this book, I only managed to read half of it.

The structure is approximately [time frame] [object topic + thì] [subject + predicate]. Hôm qua scopes over the whole event; cuốn sách này is linked to the understood object of đọc; tôi remains the grammatical subject. Calling all three noun phrases “subjects” or saying that words have moved freely would miss these distinct roles.

Read a layered clause from the outside inward: “Within this setting, as for this domain, here is the claim.” That paraphrase usually reveals why one topic comes before another.

Broad frames normally come before narrow topics

Time and place expressions define where the whole claim holds. A following noun phrase can then select one entity inside that scene.

Ở nhà hàng này, món cá thì tôi thấy ngon nhất.

At this restaurant, as for the fish dish, I find it the best.

Cuối tuần, chuyện công việc thì tôi không muốn nhắc đến.

On weekends, as for work matters, I don't want to mention them.

Trong cuộc họp sáng nay, đề xuất của chị Mai thì cả nhóm đều đồng ý.

In this morning's meeting, as for Mai's proposal, the whole team agreed with it.

The sequence is not an absolute ban on every alternative, but reversing it changes packaging or produces a marked afterthought. Món cá thì ở nhà hàng này tôi thấy ngon nhất selects the fish dish first and then locates the judgment at this restaurant; it can be appropriate if several dishes are already being compared across restaurants. Word order follows intended scope, not a mechanical transformation.

The outer frame does not always take thì. In fact, marking every layer sounds cumbersome:

Tháng này, riêng tiền điện thì nhà tôi đã phải trả gần hai triệu đồng.

This month, for the electricity bill alone, my household has already had to pay nearly two million đồng.

Here the comma separates the time frame, riêng selects one expense, and thì marks its boundary. One clear marker is enough.

Contrastive topics can be paired

Multiple-topic discourse often compares two entities within one shared frame. Còn introduces the alternative and thì gives each topic a parallel boundary.

Trong nhóm tôi, Lan thì viết báo cáo, còn Minh thì chuẩn bị số liệu.

In my group, Lan writes the report, while Minh prepares the data.

Về chỗ ở, phòng nhỏ thì còn, mà phòng lớn thì hết rồi.

As for accommodation, small rooms are still available, but the large rooms are already gone.

The first clause has an outer group frame and two person topics in coordinated comments. In the second, về chỗ ở establishes an issue domain, then phòng nhỏ and phòng lớn are contrasted. Mà links the second contrast with a “but/whereas” nuance.

Do not confuse a distributed quantifier with several topics:

Ai cũng biết.

Everyone knows.

Trong làng này, chuyện đó thì ai cũng biết.

In this village, as for that matter, everyone knows it.

In ai cũng biết, ai...cũng forms a single universal quantifier pattern. In the longer sentence, trong làng này is the place frame, chuyện đó is the object topic, and ai cũng biết is the comment. Counting surface noun-like expressions is not enough; their grammatical dependencies matter.

Possessor domains inside a larger frame

A broad scene can be followed by a possessor-like topic, whose comment then concerns an associated part or possession.

Sau vụ va chạm, chiếc xe của tôi thì cửa trước bị móp, còn động cơ vẫn chạy bình thường.

After the collision, as for my car, the front door was dented, while the engine still ran normally.

Dạo này, mẹ tôi thì đầu gối hay đau mà lưng cũng mỏi.

Lately, as for my mother, her knees often hurt and her back aches too.

The first layer sets a temporal or situational frame. The next establishes the car or mother as an aboutness domain. Inside the comment, cửa trước, động cơ, đầu gối, and lưng behave as subjects of their predicates. For the internal logic of this pattern, see Possessor Topics.

💡
Do not add a separate overt possessive pronoun to every inner noun. Once the possessor topic is clear, Vietnamese often leaves the relation implicit; repeat it only when ambiguity requires it.

Particles reveal scope

Focus particles should sit with the constituent they restrict. In a clause with several topics, their position helps the listener recover the hierarchy.

Năm nay, riêng lớp tôi thì chỉ có hai bạn đăng ký cuộc thi.

This year, in my class specifically, only two students registered for the competition.

Ở chi nhánh này, chính bộ phận kỹ thuật mới xử lý được lỗi đó.

At this branch, it is precisely the technical department that can handle that error.

Về đề xuất mới, đến cả giám đốc cũng chưa đưa ra ý kiến.

Regarding the new proposal, even the director has not yet expressed an opinion.

In the first example, riêng selects the class and chỉ restricts the number of students. In the second, chính focuses the technical department inside a place frame. In the third, đến cả...cũng yields an “even” reading. These particles do not mark interchangeable pieces that can be shuffled at will; each has local scope.

Ellipsis needs a recoverable topic

Once a topical object has been established, Vietnamese can omit a repeated object from the comment. With multiple topics, however, ellipsis becomes risky if more than one referent could fill the gap.

Trong đợt giảm giá này, chiếc áo xanh thì tôi mua rồi, còn chiếc màu đen thì chưa.

In this sale, I've bought the blue shirt already, but not the black one yet.

The missing mua in the final comment and the object gap in both comments are recovered from parallel structure. Compare an ambiguous attempt:

Nam gặp Hùng ở cửa hàng. Còn anh Tuấn thì hôm qua mới gọi.

Nam met Hùng at the shop. As for Tuấn, he only called yesterday.

Without more context, the listener may not know whom Tuấn called. A topic does not magically resolve every omitted argument. A fuller clause such as Còn anh Tuấn thì hôm qua mới gọi cho Hùng is safer.

A dialogue with nested contrasts

— Cuối tuần này, cả nhà mình thì ai lo việc gì? — Sáng thứ Bảy, mẹ thì đi chợ, bố thì dọn sân, còn con thì nấu cơm nhé.

— This weekend, who in our family is handling what? — On Saturday morning, Mum will shop, Dad will clean the yard, and you can cook, okay?

— Thế chiều thứ Bảy? — Chiều thứ Bảy thì mọi người đều rảnh, chỉ em Minh là còn phải học.

— What about Saturday afternoon? — On Saturday afternoon everyone is free; only Minh still has to study.

The question first establishes the weekend and the family as discourse domains. The reply narrows the time, then pairs person topics with tasks. The follow-up keeps the time as the active frame but switches to a universal comment mọi người đều rảnh, followed by the exclusive exception chỉ em Minh. The apparent flexibility follows a clear information hierarchy.

This page concerns several topics or frames inside one sentence or coordinated sentence. Maintaining one topic through later sentences, often with pronouns or zero expression, is a different discourse process covered on Topic Chains across Sentences.

The baseline contrast

Tôi đọc sách.

I read books / I am reading a book.

Cuốn sách này thì tôi đọc gần xong rồi.

As for this book, I've nearly finished it.

Mãi hôm qua tôi mới gặp anh ấy ở văn phòng.

It wasn't until yesterday that I met him at the office.

Ai cũng biết.

Everyone knows.

These are not four free arrangements of the same words. They instantiate neutral SVO, an object topic, a time frame, and an ai...cũng quantifier construction. Multiple-topic clauses layer compatible discourse functions while preserving each construction's internal grammar.

Common Mistakes

Stacking constituents without markers or hierarchy

❌ Cuốn sách này hôm qua thư viện tôi đọc một nửa.

Incorrect or severely disorganized — the roles and scope of three fronted constituents are unclear.

✅ Hôm qua ở thư viện, cuốn sách này thì tôi đọc được một nửa.

Yesterday at the library, as for this book, I managed to read half of it.

The repair places the broad scene first, marks the object topic with thì, and leaves tôi as the comment's subject.

Marking every layer with thì

❌ Hôm qua thì ở thư viện thì cuốn sách này thì tôi đọc rồi.

Unnatural — excessive boundary marking makes the clause heavy and obscures the hierarchy.

✅ Hôm qua ở thư viện, cuốn sách này thì tôi đọc rồi.

Yesterday at the library, as for this book, I read it already.

Time and place can form one outer scene; thì is reserved for the contrastive book topic.

Mistaking the first topic for the grammatical subject

❌ Sau vụ va chạm thì bị móp chiếc xe của tôi cửa trước.

Incorrect — English-oriented parsing has left the Vietnamese predicate structure disordered.

✅ Sau vụ va chạm, chiếc xe của tôi thì cửa trước bị móp.

After the collision, as for my car, the front door was dented.

The actual subject of bị móp is cửa trước. The car is its associated topic; the collision phrase is the outer frame.

Copying rigid English subject-first order into a contrast

❌ Tôi thứ Hai làm ở nhà, tôi thứ Ba đến văn phòng.

Unnatural as a balanced day-by-day contrast.

✅ Thứ Hai thì tôi làm ở nhà, còn thứ Ba thì tôi đến văn phòng.

On Monday I work from home, while on Tuesday I go to the office.

Parallel time topics make the intended contrast immediately recoverable.

Key Takeaways

  • Multiple-topic clauses normally proceed from a broad setting to a narrower aboutness or contrastive topic.
  • The final comment retains ordinary predicate structure; the leftmost phrase is not automatically its subject.
  • Use pauses, còn, riêng, and selective thì marking to reveal the hierarchy, not to decorate every layer.
  • Ellipsis works only when parallelism and context identify the missing material.
  • Apparent word-order freedom is disciplined by scope, givenness, contrast, and grammatical dependencies.
