A hanging topic names the domain that the speaker wants to discuss, but it does not correspond neatly to a selected argument position inside the following clause. The comment is relevant about the topic through knowledge, association, or discourse inference. This separates hanging topics from left-dislocated objects, which can be linked to a gap or resumptive expression inside the comment.
Argument linkage versus pragmatic aboutness
The distinction becomes clear when you try to reconstruct a neutral clause. In ordinary SVO, arguments occupy positions selected by the predicate:
Tôi đọc sách.
I read books / I am reading a book.
An argument-linked topic can be reconstructed as the object of đọc:
Còn cuốn sách này thì tôi đọc hết rồi.
As for this book, I’ve finished all of it.
By contrast, a hanging topic introduces a broader domain:
Còn cuốn sách này thì bìa đẹp nhưng chữ hơi nhỏ.
As for this book, the cover is beautiful, but the print is a bit small.
The comment does not contain a missing object of đọc or another slot selected for “this book.” Instead, bìa and chữ name associated parts, and world knowledge makes both remarks relevant to the book.
| Test | Left-dislocated argument | Hanging topic |
|---|---|---|
| Can it fill a clear gap? | usually yes | usually no |
| Can a pronoun resume it? | often, especially in a long comment | not necessarily; relation may be associative |
| What licenses the relation? | predicate structure plus discourse | relevance, shared knowledge, and aboutness |
| Typical marker | pause, thì, or còn | often còn...thì, về..., or a clear pause |
| Main risk | misidentifying the grammatical subject | leaving the listener unable to infer relevance |
Common aboutness relations
Hanging topics frequently support part–whole, person–property, institution–member, place–experience, or issue–consequence relations. These are pragmatic associations, not evidence that the topic has moved out of a hidden position.
Anh Nam ấy à, con trai anh ấy vừa đỗ đại học.
As for Mr Nam, his son has just been admitted to university.
Công ty này thì khá nhiều nhân viên nghỉ việc.
As for this company, quite a lot of employees are leaving.
Chuyện chuyển nhà thì giá thuê bây giờ làm tôi hơi ngại.
As for moving house, current rents make me rather hesitant.
The first includes a possessive pronoun, but the main comment is about Mr Nam’s son; the relation is broader than simply making Mr Nam the object of a verb. The company example relates an institution to its staff. The moving-house example relates a contemplated event to a practical obstacle. In each case, a shared associative bridge makes the comment coherent.
The relation can also be evaluative:
Còn món này thì mùi thơm, nhưng vị hơi mặn.
As for this dish, it smells good, but the taste is a little salty.
Về đề xuất đó thì chi phí là điều hội đồng lo nhất.
As for that proposal, cost is what the committee is most concerned about. (formal)
Về explicitly signals “regarding” and is common in organized exposition (neutral to formal). Còn...thì is natural in conversation and contrastive prose. A bare pause can work when the topic is already highly accessible.
Aboutness is not free movement
Because a hanging topic is licensed pragmatically, learners may wrongly conclude that any noun phrase can be placed first. The comment must answer an implicit question such as “What about X?” and the intended connection must be salient enough for the audience.
— Còn chuyến đi Đà Nẵng thì sao? — Vé máy bay tuần này đắt quá.
— What about the trip to Đà Nẵng? — Airfares are far too expensive this week.
The ticket prices explain a constraint on the trip. Without the question or shared planning context, the connection would be less immediate. By contrast, the following pairing lacks an obvious bridge:
Một người hàng xóm mới thì bài báo này rất dài.
A new neighbor, this article is very long. (incoherent without an exceptional context)
No ordinary knowledge relation connects the neighbor to the article. A speaker would need to make the missing link explicit—for example, say that the neighbor wrote it.
Còn người hàng xóm mới thì bài báo anh ấy viết dài quá.
As for the new neighbor, the article he wrote is far too long.
The resumptive anh ấy and relative-like modifier anh ấy viết now supply a clear bridge. That does not mean every hanging topic needs a pronoun; it means every topic needs an interpretable aboutness relation.
Givenness, contrast, and scope
Hanging topics are easiest when already mentioned, inferable from the situation, or selected from a contrast set. Focus particles inside the comment then specify what is asserted within that domain.
Còn dự án phía bắc thì chỉ giai đoạn đầu đã tốn cả trăm tỷ đồng.
As for the northern project, the first phase alone has already cost a hundred billion đồng.
Chuyện này thì ai cũng biết cả.
As for this matter, absolutely everyone knows.
In ai cũng biết, ai cũng forms “everyone.” Depending on context, chuyện đó can be analyzed as an understood object topic, so this is not the clearest hanging-topic example. That ambiguity is instructive: topic types form a gradient in actual discourse. The stronger diagnostic is whether the comment requires a syntactic argument link. In the project example, the first phase and its cost establish an associative aboutness relation rather than a missing project object.
Particles retain local scope:
Còn phần thiết kế thì chính Lan đứng đầu nhóm.
As for the design work, Lan herself heads the team.
Còn ngân sách thì đến hôm qua tôi mới nhận được số liệu.
As for the budget, I only received the figures yesterday.
Chính focuses Lan; mới marks the late or recent receipt of the figures. Neither particle licenses the initial topic. The topic is licensed independently by discourse relevance.
A short dialogue: one domain, several comments
— Còn hội thảo tuần sau thì chuẩn bị đến đâu rồi? — Địa điểm thì đã chốt. Diễn giả cũng xác nhận hết rồi, chỉ có lịch chi tiết là chưa gửi.
— As for next week’s conference, how far along are the preparations? — The venue is confirmed. The speakers have all confirmed too; only the detailed schedule hasn’t been sent.
Hội thảo tuần sau hangs over a sequence of comments. It is not the missing object of chốt, xác nhận, or gửi. Instead, venue, speakers, and schedule are components of the conference. After the domain is established, Vietnamese can maintain it across sentences without repeating it; cũng adds the speakers to the list, and chỉ...là isolates the remaining problem.
If translated word for word as “The conference, the venue...,” English can sound fragmented. Natural English often uses “As for the conference” or makes the conference possessive. Vietnamese tolerates the domain-comment sequence readily because the discourse hierarchy is clear.
Not the same as a scene-setting frame
An initial time or place phrase can restrict where or when the entire proposition holds:
Hôm qua tôi mới tình cờ gặp anh ấy.
I only happened to run into him yesterday.
This is ordinarily a temporal frame, not a hanging aboutness topic. Adding thì can make a contrast between times—Hôm qua thì... còn hôm nay thì...—but the semantic job remains temporal framing. The dedicated page on scene-setting time and place topics develops that boundary. Here the focus is a referent or issue that establishes what the discourse is about.
Register and rhetorical effect
Bare hanging topics and còn...thì are frequent in conversation (informal and neutral). Về, đối với, xét về, and riêng về can introduce carefully delimited domains in professional or academic prose (formal/academic). Formal writing demands an especially clear logical bridge; a sequence that relies only on private associations sounds rambling.
Xét về hiệu quả kinh tế, chi phí vận hành mới là vấn đề đáng lưu ý.
In terms of economic efficiency, operating costs are the issue that deserves attention. (academic)
The frame explicitly names the evaluation dimension. It should not be confused with ordinary argument fronting.
Common Mistakes
Assuming the hanging topic is the grammatical subject
❌ Công ty này nghỉ việc khá nhiều.
Incorrect for the intended meaning — a company cannot be the employee who repeatedly leaves a job.
✅ Riêng công ty này thì khá nhiều nhân viên nghỉ việc.
As for this company in particular, quite a lot of employees are leaving.
The company supplies the domain; employees perform the leaving.
Fronting a phrase with no inferable bridge
❌ Cái điện thoại này thì em gái tôi đang ngủ.
Incoherent — the phone and the sister’s sleeping have no evident aboutness relation.
✅ Còn cái điện thoại này thì pin của nó dùng được cả ngày.
As for this phone, its battery lasts all day.
The repair provides a clear part–whole bridge without making the phone a direct object of the comment. Another context could support a different bridge, but it must be made accessible.
Forcing an English resumptive pronoun into every comment
❌ Chuyện chuyển nhà thì tôi lo nó giá thuê đắt.
Incorrect — nó cannot resume the abstract topic inside this malformed clause.
✅ Chuyện chuyển nhà thì tôi lo nhất là giá thuê quá cao.
As for moving house, what worries me most is that rents are too high.
The hanging topic frames the concern; là introduces the content of what worries the speaker.
Forcing a time frame into a hanging-topic contrast
❌ Hôm qua thì hôm nay tôi mới gặp anh ấy.
Incorrect — hôm qua and hôm nay create incompatible frames for one meeting.
✅ Chiều hôm qua tôi mới gặp anh ấy.
I only met him yesterday afternoon.
Do not classify constructions by linear position alone.
Key Takeaways
- A hanging topic establishes a discourse domain without filling a clear argument slot in the comment.
- Association, shared knowledge, and relevance form the interpretive bridge.
- Left-dislocated arguments permit reconstruction or resumption; hanging topics often relate through parts, people, consequences, or evaluations.
- Focus particles such as chính, chỉ, mới, cả, and cũng keep their own scope inside the comment.
- Pragmatic aboutness expands Vietnamese clause packaging, but it never licenses arbitrary fronting: the audience must be able to understand why the comment is about the topic.
