The basic spatial meaning of ra is outward motion: ra ngoài “go outside,” chạy ra sân “run out into the yard.” Vietnamese extends that outward path into the domains of knowledge and creation. After certain verbs, ra marks an answer being uncovered, an idea entering awareness, words becoming overt, or a product coming into existence: tìm ra nguyên nhân, nghĩ ra cách, nói ra sự thật, làm ra sản phẩm.
The shared image is emergence into accessibility, not simply “completion.” Because this extension depends heavily on established collocations, learners should not attach ra to every verb that has a result. This page focuses on discovery and production; the broader question of how to diagnose serial-verb constructions belongs on the dedicated foundations page.
From outward path to accessible result
In its literal directional use, ra follows a motion or caused-motion verb:
Nghe chuông, mọi người chạy ra ngoài.
When they heard the bell, everyone ran outside.
Mở cửa ra cho thoáng đi.
Open the door so some air can come through.
The ordering is iconic: the initiating action comes first, then the outward path or open endpoint. Discovery and production preserve that organization metaphorically. Something previously hidden, internal, unformulated, or nonexistent becomes available.
Kỹ sư đã tìm ra nguyên nhân của sự cố.
The engineers found the cause of the malfunction.
Cuối cùng chị ấy nghĩ ra một cách ít tốn kém hơn.
She finally came up with a less expensive way.
In tìm ra, searching brings an answer out of uncertainty. In nghĩ ra, thinking brings an idea into formulated existence. English uses unrelated expressions—find out, work out, come up with—where Vietnamese displays the common emergence metaphor.
A compact map of the main uses
| Domain | Common combinations | Result made accessible |
|---|---|---|
| literal path | đi ra, chạy ra, mang ra | person or object moves outward |
| discovery | tìm ra, phát hiện ra | cause, fact, culprit, or solution |
| recognition | nhận ra, hiểu ra | identity or implication becomes clear |
| formulation | nghĩ ra, viết ra, nói ra | idea or content becomes explicit |
| production | làm ra, tạo ra, in ra | product, value, copy, or output |
The categories overlap. Viết ra can externalize an idea or produce written output; đọc ra can mean deciphering something until its words become identifiable. Context chooses the relevant path.
Discovery and recognition
Discovery uses commonly take an answer-like object: a reason, rule, mistake, identity, or solution.
Tôi đọc lại số liệu ba lần mới nhận ra lỗi nằm ở cột cuối.
I reread the figures three times before realizing that the error was in the last column.
Nhìn nét chữ, cô giáo đoán ra ai đã viết lời nhắn.
From the handwriting, the teacher figured out who had written the note.
Nói chuyện một lúc, tôi mới hiểu ra vì sao anh ấy từ chối.
After talking for a while, I finally understood why he had refused.
Mới often accompanies this resultative because it foregrounds the threshold at which recognition is finally reached. The event is not merely ongoing understanding; it is a transition into insight.
Compare tìm thấy and tìm ra:
| Form | Typical focus | Example |
|---|---|---|
| tìm thấy | locating a sought entity | tìm thấy chìa khóa “find the keys” |
| tìm ra | uncovering or solving an answer | tìm ra nguyên nhân “discover the cause” |
This is a robust learner’s default, not an exceptionless ontological division. Speakers can construe a person or object as the answer to an investigation, and lexical context affects the choice. Learn recurrent noun–verb combinations rather than applying “concrete versus abstract” mechanically.
Formulation and production
With speech and writing, ra makes internal or implicit content overt:
Có điều gì khó chịu thì cứ nói ra, đừng giữ trong lòng.
If something is bothering you, say it; don’t keep it inside.
Hãy viết ý chính ra giấy trước khi làm bài.
Write the main ideas down on paper before doing the exercise.
The contrast between trong lòng “inside oneself” and nói ra makes the source image especially clear. In viết ý chính ra giấy, the object can appear between the activity verb and ra; ra giấy also retains a spatial/output flavor, “out onto paper.” Resultative sequences allow several object positions depending on the verb, information structure, and whether a following phrase expresses the output medium. Do not derive object order from one rigid formula.
Production verbs treat the product as emerging from the activity:
Xưởng nhỏ này làm ra đồ gỗ rất bền.
This small workshop makes very durable wooden goods.
Một thay đổi nhỏ có thể tạo ra khác biệt lớn.
A small change can make a big difference.
Cậu in tài liệu này ra hai bản giúp mình nhé.
Could you print two copies of this document for me?
Làm ra and tạo ra profile produced output. In ... ra can be more concrete: information becomes a physical printout. Bare làm, tạo, and in remain possible; ra explicitly highlights the resulting product or emergence.
Negation and delayed results
Because ra supplies an attained endpoint, negation can leave the activity intact while denying discovery:
Tôi nghĩ cả buổi mà vẫn không nghĩ ra tên phù hợp.
I thought all afternoon but still couldn’t come up with a suitable name.
Nhóm điều tra chưa tìm ra động cơ của vụ việc.
The investigation team has not yet established the motive for the incident.
In both examples, thinking or investigation occurred. Không/chưa ... ra says the sought output did not emerge. Compare không nghĩ “not think” and không tìm “not search,” which deny the initiating activities themselves.
Iconic order across related sequences
The resultative use fits a larger Vietnamese preference for ordering subevents as they are conceptually arranged:
| Sequence | Relation |
|---|---|
| đi mua đồ | motion → purpose |
| mang sách về | handling → deictic direction |
| ăn hết cơm | action → exhaustive result |
| mở cửa ra | action → outward/open endpoint |
| làm cho tôi hiểu | cause → clause-like caused state |
| nghĩ ra cách | mental activity → formulated result |
Nghĩ ra cách has one thinker and an idea that results from thinking. Làm cho tôi hiểu has tôi as the explicit experiencer of hiểu, so its second predicate is more independent. Đi mua đồ encodes a goal or purpose rather than an attained result. These distinctions matter more than counting adjacent verbs.
English-speaking learners often want to insert to between Vietnamese verbs. But nghĩ ra does not mean “think in order to come out,” and tìm ra does not need để. The second element contributes a constructional result directly.
What ra does not mean
Do not equate ra with general completion. Viết xong báo cáo means “finish the report”; viết ý ra means “put the idea into words.” Do not equate it with successful ability either: mở được cửa means “manage to open the door,” whereas mở cửa ra presents the opening/outward endpoint. Finally, do not treat every literal ra as abstract result: mang ghế ra sân simply directs the chair outward to the yard.
The resultative extension is neutral across regions and registers. Nghĩ ra, tìm ra, nhận ra, and nói ra occur constantly in conversation. Formal and academic prose also uses tạo ra, chỉ ra “point out/demonstrate,” and suy ra “infer.” Suy ra and some other Sino-Vietnamese combinations are conventional lexical items; advanced readers should recognize them without assuming that their internal syntax is identical in every respect.
A natural dialogue
Vy: Cậu tìm ra vì sao ứng dụng cứ bị treo chưa? — Minh: Chưa. Tớ nhận ra lỗi chỉ xảy ra khi mất mạng, nhưng vẫn chưa nghĩ ra cách sửa. — Vy: Thử ghi từng bước ra xem; biết đâu mình phát hiện ra chỗ sai.
Vy: Have you figured out why the app keeps freezing? — Minh: Not yet. I realized the error only occurs when the connection drops, but I still haven’t thought of a fix. — Vy: Try writing out each step; maybe we’ll discover where it goes wrong.
The dialogue moves through several kinds of emergence: tìm ra seeks an explanation, nhận ra marks recognition, nghĩ ra seeks a formulated solution, ghi ... ra externalizes the process, and phát hiện ra uncovers the fault.
Common Mistakes
Inserting a purpose marker into a resultative
❌ Tôi nghĩ để ra một giải pháp.
Wrong for ‘I came up with a solution’: để incorrectly presents the result as a purpose clause.
✅ Tôi nghĩ ra một giải pháp.
I came up with a solution.
The activity directly precedes the result it produces.
Reversing the event order
❌ Cuối cùng tôi ra tìm nguyên nhân.
This is read, if at all, as going out to investigate—not as discovering the cause.
✅ Cuối cùng tôi tìm ra nguyên nhân.
I finally found the cause.
Putting ra first activates its motion meaning and loses the search → discovery construction.
Using ra for every kind of finding
❌ Tôi tìm ra chìa khóa dưới ghế.
Context-mismatched for a neutral location report: tìm ra makes the finding sound like an achieved breakthrough.
✅ Tôi tìm thấy chìa khóa dưới ghế.
I found the keys under the chair.
Tìm ra is not ungrammatical with a concrete object: it can emphasize finally succeeding after a difficult search. For a plain report that the keys came into view at a location, however, tìm thấy is the neutral choice. The repair matches the result marker to that intended construal instead of imposing an absolute concrete-versus-abstract rule.
Confusing emergence with completion
❌ Tôi viết ra báo cáo rồi.
This does not naturally mean ‘I finished the report’; ra highlights externalization/output, not task completion.
✅ Tôi đã viết xong báo cáo.
I’ve finished writing the report.
Use xong when the relevant endpoint is the task being complete.
Key Takeaways
- Resultative ra extends literal outward path into discovery, recognition, formulation, and production.
- The recurring logic is activity → emergence into accessibility.
- Tìm thấy typically locates a sought entity; tìm ra typically uncovers an answer or solution.
- Ra is not a universal completion or success marker, and native collocations constrain its use.
