The directional lên begins with upward movement: đi lên tầng ba “go up to the third floor,” mang vali lên “take the suitcase up.” Vietnamese extends that spatial path to movement onto a surface, entry into a conventionally higher position, and changes toward greater degree: giá tăng lên “the price increases,” trời ấm lên “the weather gets warmer,” nói to lên “speak louder.”
These meanings form a coherent family, but lên is not an all-purpose equivalent of English up. Some combinations are productive directional or scalar patterns; others, such as lớn lên “grow up” and lên tiếng “speak out,” are established collocations. This page explains how to tell them apart. The downward and decreasing patterns with xuống are covered separately on the next page.
Physical upward movement
When lên is the route-setting verb, the subject moves upward before performing a following purpose:
Tôi lên tầng năm gặp chị Hương một lát.
I’m going up to the fifth floor to see Ms. Hương for a moment.
Nam lên sân khấu nhận giải trong tiếng vỗ tay.
Nam went up onstage to receive the award amid applause.
The order is iconic: upward route first, purpose second. English normally uses to before meet or receive; neutral Vietnamese can place the purpose verb directly after the route or destination.
After a handling verb, lên instead tracks the upward path of an affected object. The usual order is action + object + lên + destination.
An overt manner verb can precede the directional: in chạy lên cầu thang, chạy specifies how the subject moves and lên cầu thang specifies the upward path. A following purpose can then continue the same itinerary, as in chạy lên tầng ba lấy tài liệu “run up to the third floor to get the documents.”
Mang vali lên phòng giúp mẹ nhé.
Take the suitcase up to the room for Mom, please.
Anh treo bức ảnh lên tường giúp em nhé.
Please hang the picture on the wall for me.
The suitcase and picture move upward or onto a higher supporting surface. Lên integrates that path with mang or treo; it is not a separate action by the subject.
Contact with a surface and transition to a position
“Up” need not mean a large vertical distance. Vietnamese often uses lên when an object moves onto a surface or a person assumes a position conceived as raised.
Đặt hồ sơ lên bàn rồi chụp lại giúp tôi.
Put the file on the desk and photograph it for me.
Nghe gọi tên, cô ấy đứng lên ngay.
When she heard her name called, she stood up immediately.
In đặt hồ sơ lên bàn, the endpoint is contact with the upper surface. In đứng lên, the body changes from a lower seated or lying posture to standing. English happens to use on and up, but the Vietnamese generalization is a path toward a higher/supporting configuration.
Some contexts allow trên instead of or in addition to lên, but they do different jobs. Trên bàn locates something “on the table”; lên bàn gives a path “onto the table.”
Hồ sơ ở trên bàn; tôi vừa đặt nó lên đó.
The file is on the desk; I just put it there.
The first phrase is static location, while the second completes a caused-motion event.
From higher position to greater degree
The spatial scale extends naturally to quantities and qualities. A following lên presents the new state as higher on a relevant scale.
Từ chiều mai, nhiệt độ sẽ tăng lên khoảng ba mươi lăm độ.
Starting tomorrow afternoon, the temperature will rise to about thirty-five degrees.
Uống thuốc xong, cô ấy thấy khỏe lên nhiều.
After taking the medicine, she felt much better.
Trời sáng lên rồi, mình đi thôi.
It’s getting light now; let’s go.
With an explicit change verb such as tăng “increase” or nâng “raise,” lên reinforces or specifies the upward endpoint. With a gradable property such as khỏe, sáng, ấm, to, or rõ, it can mark becoming more of that property. The pattern is productive, but not every adjective sounds natural with it; usage and collocation still matter.
The participant structure distinguishes spontaneous and caused change:
Âm lượng tăng lên đột ngột.
The volume rose suddenly.
Anh tăng âm lượng lên một chút được không?
Could you turn the volume up a little?
In the first sentence, âm lượng itself occupies a higher point on the scale. In the second, a person causes the volume to rise; âm lượng is the object of tăng and precedes lên.
Endpoint, amount, and comparison
Do not confuse a new endpoint with the amount of increase. Vietnamese makes the contrast clearest by using mức “level” for the endpoint and thêm “additional” for the increment.
| Form | Meaning | Example interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| tăng lên mức 10% | rise to a 10% level | 10% is the endpoint |
| tăng thêm 10% | increase by another 10% | 10% is the increment |
| cao lên 10 cm | become 10 cm taller | 10 cm is the difference |
| cao lên đến 2 m | rise/reach 2 m | 2 m is the endpoint |
Bare tăng lên 10% can be interpreted differently in real reporting, so careful formal writing states mức or thêm. This is not mere stylistic fuss: confusing a percentage-point endpoint with a percentage increase can change the factual claim.
A compact map of serial meanings
The position and construction around a later verb determine its contribution:
| Sequence | Integrated relation | Natural English |
|---|---|---|
| đi mua đồ | motion + purpose | go buy groceries |
| mang sách về | handling + return direction | bring the books back |
| ăn hết cơm | action + exhaustive result | finish the rice |
| mở cửa ra | action + outward/open result | open the door |
| làm cho tôi hiểu | cause + caused predication | make me understand |
| nói to lên | action + higher degree | speak louder |
Nói to lên does not mean “speak, then independently go up.” The manner/volume property changes upward as part of the speaking event. Likewise, ăn hết cơm treats hết as a result, not an independent disappearance. Vietnamese sequences compress event structure, and English translations redistribute the same information.
Conventional extensions and lexical collocations
Several frequent lên expressions retain only part of the transparent spatial meaning:
- lớn lên “grow up” expresses development over time.
- tốt lên / khá lên “get better” moves upward on an evaluative scale.
- lên tiếng “speak up; voice an opinion” is a lexical collocation.
- lên kế hoạch “make/draw up a plan” is a lexical collocation.
- lên cơn sốt “develop a fever” belongs to a conventional onset pattern.
Sau vài tháng vật lý trị liệu, đầu gối của anh ấy khá lên rõ rệt.
After a few months of physical therapy, his knee improved noticeably.
Nhiều chuyên gia đã lên tiếng phản đối đề xuất đó.
Many experts spoke out against that proposal.
The first example transparently places a condition higher on a “better” scale. The second is best learned as lên tiếng, not generated from a general rule that speech moves upward.
English phrasal verbs are especially dangerous here. “Eat up” is often ăn hết, “clean up” is dọn dẹp, “call someone up” is gọi điện cho ai, and “make up a story” is bịa chuyện. None requires lên.
A natural dialogue: physical and scalar lên
Mai: Phòng họp ở đâu vậy? — Sơn: Cậu mang máy chiếu lên tầng ba nhé. Đến nơi thì chỉnh âm lượng lên một chút, nhưng đừng để to quá. — Mai: Được, mình mang lên ngay.
Mai: Where is the meeting room? — Sơn: Take the projector up to the third floor. When you get there, turn the volume up a little, but don’t make it too loud. — Mai: Okay, I’ll take it up now.
The first and last mang … lên track the projector’s physical path. Chỉnh âm lượng lên raises a value on a scale. The shared upward schema makes both uses understandable, while the surrounding nouns—tầng ba versus âm lượng—select the spatial or scalar reading.
Common Mistakes
Reversing the action and direction
❌ Lên mang vali phòng giúp mẹ.
Incorrect order for ‘take the suitcase up to the room.’
✅ Mang vali lên phòng giúp mẹ.
Take the suitcase up to the room for Mom.
The carrying action affects vali first; lên phòng then gives that object’s path and destination.
Using directional lên for a static location
❌ Hồ sơ đang lên bàn.
Incorrect for ‘the file is on the desk’; lên expresses a path, not a static location.
✅ Hồ sơ đang ở trên bàn.
The file is on the desk.
Use trên with a locative predicate such as ở for the resulting static location. Use lên in a caused-path expression such as đặt hồ sơ lên bàn “put the file onto the desk.”
Leaving a percentage relation ambiguous
❌ Tỷ lệ tăng thêm mức 10%.
Incorrectly mixes the increment marker thêm with the endpoint expression mức 10%.
✅ Tỷ lệ tăng lên mức 10%.
The rate rose to 10%.
For an increment, use tăng thêm 10%. For an endpoint, use tăng lên mức 10%. The repair keeps those two frames distinct.
Translating English up mechanically
❌ Con ăn lên cơm đi.
Incorrect word-for-word rendering of ‘eat up your rice.’
✅ Con ăn hết cơm đi.
Finish your rice.
English up marks completion here; Vietnamese uses the exhaustive result hết, not upward lên.
Key Takeaways
- Lên can head an upward route or follow an action to mark an object’s upward/onto path.
- With quantities and gradable properties, it can mark change toward a greater level or intensity.
- Endpoint and increment need clear wording: compare lên mức 10% with thêm 10%.
- Frequent lexical combinations must be learned individually; English up is not a translation rule.
- The downward and decreasing counterpart is xuống, but its productivity and collocations require separate treatment.
