Vietnamese expresses change of state through several distinct resources: a lexical predicate such as vỡ “break/become broken,” a property plus a directional result such as ấm lên “become warmer,” or a construction such as trở nên + property and trở thành + noun. The forms do not conjugate. What changes is the construction around them and the aspectual viewpoint supplied by context, đã, rồi, dần, or bắt đầu.
English become, get, turn, and grow overlap unpredictably with these patterns. Vietnamese requires the learner to decide whether the result is a property, a new category or role, a transition encoded in the lexical predicate, or a scalar movement. This page covers the change itself; an external causer expressed with làm or khiến belongs on Causative Làm and Khiến.
Choose the construction by result type
| Result intended | Common construction | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| new property or condition | trở nên + property phrase | explicit “become,” often expository or formal |
| new identity, role, or category | trở thành + noun phrase | become a teacher/leader/problem |
| conversion into a result | biến/hóa thành + noun phrase, or verb + thành + result | transform into, turn into, form into |
| switch to a new state/system/activity | chuyển sang + noun/VP | change over to |
| increase, activation, emergence | property/predicate + lên | ấm lên, sáng lên, nổi lên |
| decrease, attenuation, deterioration | property/predicate + đi | nguội đi, yếu đi, nhạt đi |
| expansion, opening, perceptible result | predicate + ra | mở ra, rộng ra, nhận ra |
| return/restoration or repetition | predicate + lại | đóng lại, khỏe lại, làm lại |
These directional extensions are productive only within lexical conventions. Lên often aligns with more intensity and đi with less, but neither can be attached freely to every property. When usage is unfamiliar, learn the complete combination. Likewise, resultative thành normally belongs to a larger frame such as biến A thành B, chia A thành B, or verb + thành + result; it is not a free conversational replacement for trở thành.
Property change versus category change
Trở nên normally introduces a property phrase. It is common in explanatory, journalistic, and formal prose (neutral/formal), though it also occurs in careful speech.
Sau cơn mưa, không khí trở nên mát mẻ hơn.
After the rain, the air became cooler and more pleasant.
Cuộc thảo luận trở nên căng thẳng khi ngân sách được nhắc đến.
The discussion became tense when the budget was mentioned.
Trở thành introduces a noun phrase denoting a role, identity, category, or result.
Sau nhiều năm học tập, cô ấy trở thành bác sĩ.
After many years of study, she became a doctor.
Thiếu nhân lực đã trở thành vấn đề lớn nhất của dự án.
The lack of staff has become the project's biggest problem.
This contrast parallels another fundamental predicate distinction. Cô ấy là giáo viên uses là for an established classification; Cô ấy trở thành giáo viên presents entry into that class. A property needs no neutral copula: Trời lạnh means “It is cold,” while Trời lạnh hơn rồi presents a newly relevant colder state.
Lexical predicates can encode the change themselves
Many Vietnamese predicates are interpreted as a transition or its result without a separate word meaning become: vỡ “break,” chết “die,” mất “be lost/disappear,” mở “open,” đóng “close,” chín “ripen/be cooked,” khỏi “recover/be cured.” Aspect and result context help distinguish the event from the resulting state.
Điện thoại rơi xuống sàn và màn hình vỡ rồi.
The phone fell on the floor, and the screen has broken.
Xoài này chưa chín; để thêm hai ngày nữa nhé.
This mango isn't ripe yet; let's leave it for two more days.
Cửa đã mở, anh vào đi.
The door is open now; come in.
Vỡ rồi foregrounds an achieved change with current consequences. Chưa chín says the relevant ripeness boundary has not yet been reached; in another context chín can simply describe the resulting property. Đã mở can mean that opening has taken place and the open state now holds. Vietnamese often leaves event-versus-result underspecified when the distinction is recoverable.
Some predicates alternate in valency, but not all do so freely. Cửa mở can describe the door opening or being open; Tôi mở cửa adds an agent and object. Màn hình vỡ is intransitive, while causing it to break normally needs làm vỡ màn hình, which belongs to causative grammar. Never assume that every English transitive/intransitive alternation has the same Vietnamese frame.
Scalar change with lên and đi
After a scalar property, lên commonly signals movement toward greater degree, activation, or a more salient state. Đi commonly signals reduction, weakening, fading, or deterioration.
Trưa nay trời ấm lên nhanh, nhưng tối sẽ lạnh lại.
It warmed up quickly at noon, but it will turn cold again this evening.
Sau khi uống thuốc, cơn đau dịu đi một chút.
After taking the medicine, the pain eased a little.
Nghe tin được nhận việc, mặt cô ấy sáng lên.
When she heard that she had got the job, her face lit up.
Từ khi chuyển nhà, anh ấy gầy đi trông thấy.
Since moving house, he has become noticeably thinner.
These are not literal journeys, but their direction is conceptually visible: warmth and brightness rise; pain and bodily fullness diminish. Lại in lạnh lại restores an earlier state. However, speakers choose conventional collocations, not an abstract algebra. For example, tốt lên “improve” and đỡ hơn “get better” are natural in different frames, while not every positive property combines equally well with lên.
Ra, lại, and shifts of viewpoint
Ra can present expansion, opening, separation, emergence, or arrival at recognition. Lại can mark restoration, closure, repetition, or return toward a prior configuration.
Kéo rèm ra cho phòng sáng hơn một chút.
Open the curtains so the room is a little brighter.
Đọc đến đoạn cuối, tôi mới nhận ra người kể chuyện đã nói dối.
Only when I reached the final passage did I realize that the narrator had lied.
Gió mạnh quá; đóng cửa sổ lại đi.
The wind is too strong; close the window.
In nhận ra, the result is cognitive recognition, not spatial movement. In đóng... lại, lại presents closure/restoration; it need not mean “do it again.” Context decides whether lại is restitutive (“back”) or repetitive (“again”).
Hóa ra is a fixed discourse predicate meaning “it turns out / as it turns out,” not a general substitute for trở nên:
Hóa ra chìa khóa vẫn nằm trong túi áo của tôi.
It turned out that the key was still in my coat pocket.
It introduces a newly discovered fact. It does not mean that the key changed into something.
Gradual, beginning, and completed change
Vietnamese can locate phases of a change explicitly. Bắt đầu marks onset, dần/dần dần gradual development, and rồi an achieved or newly relevant state.
Tình hình bắt đầu ổn định và khách hàng dần quay lại.
The situation is beginning to stabilize, and customers are gradually returning.
Cà phê nguội rồi; để tôi pha cốc khác cho anh.
The coffee has gone cold; let me make you another cup.
Bare nguội can describe coolness or cooling according to context. Final rồi makes the new state salient: the coffee is now cold, contrary to an earlier expectation. Đang nguội views the cooling process from inside. There is no conjugational contrast corresponding to English cools, is cooling, cooled, and has cooled.
Change within the larger predicate system
| Clause | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Tôi ăn cơm. | dynamic action + object |
| Cô ấy là giáo viên. | established nominal classification |
| Cô ấy trở thành giáo viên. | entry into a nominal category |
| Trời lạnh. | property state without a copula |
| Trời lạnh hơn rồi. | newly relevant change in degree |
| Tôi có một câu hỏi. | possession with có |
| Ở đây có Wi-Fi. | location + existential có |
The contrast shows why là is not inserted before ordinary properties. Trở thành selects a nominal result, while property change has other constructions.
A change interpreted in context
A: Phòng họp lạnh quá. B: Tôi vừa tăng nhiệt độ lên rồi, lát nữa phòng sẽ ấm lên. A: Nếu vẫn lạnh thì mình chuyển sang phòng bên cạnh nhé. B: Được, nhưng phòng đó đang được dùng làm kho.
A: The meeting room is too cold. B: I've just raised the temperature; the room will warm up shortly. A: If it's still cold, let's switch to the next room. B: Okay, but that room is currently being used as a storeroom.
Ấm lên is an inchoative scalar change in the room. Chuyển sang presents a switch to a different location/arrangement. Được dùng làm kho contains passive/favorable được and light verb làm, but it describes the room's current use, not the temperature change. If the dialogue said máy sưởi làm phòng ấm lên, it would add an external causer and move into the domain of làm causatives.
Common Mistakes
1. Using trở thành before an ordinary property.
❌ Không khí trở thành lạnh hơn.
Incorrect selection: lạnh hơn is a property phrase, not a noun category.
✅ Không khí trở nên lạnh hơn.
The air became colder.
In everyday context, Trời lạnh hơn rồi may be still more natural.
2. Using trở nên before a profession or category.
❌ Cô ấy trở nên bác sĩ.
Incorrect: bác sĩ is a nominal role.
✅ Cô ấy trở thành bác sĩ.
She became a doctor.
This is the change counterpart of classification with là.
3. Inserting là before the result property.
❌ Cà phê là nguội rồi.
Incorrect neutral clause: là does not link the subject to the property nguội.
✅ Cà phê nguội rồi.
The coffee has gone cold.
Nguội itself is the predicate; rồi makes the new result salient.
4. Treating directional results as freely interchangeable.
❌ Sau khi uống thuốc, cơn đau dịu lên.
Unnatural for the intended decrease in pain: lên suggests an increase rather than attenuation here.
✅ Sau khi uống thuốc, cơn đau dịu đi.
After taking the medicine, the pain eased.
Learn dịu đi, ấm lên, khỏe lại, and similar combinations with their lexical direction.
5. Copying English tense as an ending.
❌ Đêm qua trời lạnh-đã.
Incorrect: đã is not a suffix attached to a property predicate.
✅ Đêm qua trời lạnh hơn hẳn.
Last night it was much colder.
The time expression supplies past reference. Independent đã is possible when it contributes a prior or attained viewpoint, as in Trời đã lạnh rồi “It has become cold now.”
Key Takeaways
Select a change construction by its result: trở nên + property, trở thành + noun category, a lexical transition such as vỡ, or a conventional result combination with lên, đi, ra, or lại. Aspect words and context distinguish process from result without altering the predicate's form. Directional extensions are meaningful but lexically restricted, and adding an external cause requires a separate causative construction.
