Uống: Drink and Medication Frames

Vietnamese uống means consume a liquid by drinking and also serves as the ordinary predicate for taking medicine that is swallowed. Its objects include nước, cà phê, and bia, but also thuốc, viên thuốc, and dosage phrases. Result words distinguish drinking all of a quantity (uống hết), completing the activity (uống xong), and emptying a vessel (uống cạn).

The word uống never changes form. Đang uống, đã uống, sẽ uống, and uống rồi combine the same predicate with aspect or time. For English speakers, the major trap is translation: English uses drink for beverages but take for medicine; Vietnamese often uses uống for both. Sleep predicates and their result expressions belong on the dedicated ngủ page.

Beverages and measured quantities

A beverage follows uống directly. A measured quantity includes the appropriate container or measure: một cốc nước, hai tách cà phê, nửa chai nước, một ngụm trà. The container phrase measures what is consumed; it need not claim that the physical cup or bottle was swallowed.

Sáng nào tôi cũng uống một tách cà phê sau khi ăn sáng.

Every morning I drink a cup of coffee after breakfast.

Trời nóng thế này, nhớ uống đủ nước nhé.

In heat like this, remember to drink enough water. (informal reminder)

In invitations, đi uống cà phê may mean go for coffee as a social activity, even if someone orders another drink. Uống bia/rượu can refer neutrally to consuming beer/alcohol; in context, bare uống may euphemistically mean drink alcohol, but do not assume that reading without context.

Tan làm mình đi uống cà phê rồi nói chuyện tiếp nhé.

After work, let’s go for coffee and continue our conversation. (informal)

Soup is normally food: Vietnamese generally says ăn canh, not uống canh, although someone may uống nước canh “drink the broth.” This is a collocational boundary, not a biological claim about whether soup is liquid.

Swallowed medicine: uống thuốc

For tablets, capsules, syrups, and other medicine taken by swallowing, the default predicate is uống. Uống thuốc means take medicine; uống một viên thuốc means take/swallow one pill. English take does not license lấy or mang here.

Bác sĩ dặn tôi uống thuốc sau bữa ăn.

The doctor instructed me to take the medicine after a meal.

Cháu uống siro này bằng thìa đo, đừng dùng thìa ăn cơm nhé.

Take this syrup with the measuring spoon; don’t use a regular eating spoon. (caregiver instruction)

Dosage instructions commonly follow this sequence: medicine or understood object + amount per dose + frequency + timing. For example, uống mỗi lần một viên, ngày hai lần, sau bữa ăn means “take one tablet each time, twice daily, after meals.” Real medication instructions must be followed exactly as issued; the examples here explain grammar, not dosing.

Theo hướng dẫn trên nhãn, thuốc này uống mỗi lần hai viên, ngày một lần.

According to the label, the dose is two tablets once a day. (formal/medical)

Tôi quên mất liều sáng; tôi nên làm gì?

I forgot the morning dose; what should I do?

Not every treatment uses uống. Cream is bôi thuốc, eye or nose drops are nhỏ thuốc, an injection is tiêm thuốc, and a lozenge may be ngậm. Choose the predicate for the route of administration rather than translating English take medicine blindly.

💡
Use uống thuốc only when the medicine is swallowed. Vietnamese names other routes directly: bôi, nhỏ, tiêm, or ngậm.

Completion, emptying, and resulting state

Uống hết tracks a bounded quantity: all the water, all the medicine, the whole glass. Uống xong says the drinking event is finished, even if some liquid remains. Uống cạn emphasizes leaving a vessel empty and is common in toasts or vivid narration. Uống say means drink until intoxicated or drink to excess; it does not merely mean drink alcohol.

Tôi uống xong rồi nhưng trong cốc vẫn còn một ít trà.

I’ve finished drinking, but there is still a little tea in the cup.

Anh phải uống hết liều thuốc này theo đúng chỉ dẫn.

You need to take this entire dose exactly as instructed.

Mọi người nâng ly chúc mừng, nhưng không ai ép khách uống cạn.

Everyone raised a glass in celebration, but nobody pressured the guests to drain it. (neutral)

With alcohol, uống được may mean be able or willing to drink, sometimes specifically have alcohol tolerance. With another object it can express dietary tolerance or a managed quantity. Không uống được sữa can describe intolerance; hôm nay chỉ uống được vài ngụm presents a limited achieved amount.

Tôi không uống được sữa bò nên gọi cà phê sữa yến mạch.

I can’t tolerate cow’s milk, so I ordered coffee with oat milk.

Aspect, negation, questions, and ordering

Đang uống presents an ongoing event; đã uống locates it earlier; uống rồi confirms current relevance; chưa uống means not yet drunk/taken. In health contexts, Uống thuốc chưa? asks whether the dose has been taken, while Đã uống thuốc gì? asks which medicine was taken.

Tôi đã uống thuốc rồi nên bây giờ sẽ nghỉ một lát.

I’ve taken my medicine, so now I’m going to rest for a while.

Không uống can be a refusal or general habit; đừng uống prohibits; chưa uống leaves an expected event pending. Questions use uống gì, uống bao nhiêu, uống khi nào, and uống với gì. In ordering, cho tôi... or cho tôi xin... frames the request; uống itself need not appear if the drink noun is enough.

Cho tôi xin một ly trà đá, ít đường nhé.

Could I have an iced tea with little sugar, please? (informal/polite)

A minimal five-way contrast

aspect-markedBà đang uống thuốc.Grandma is taking her medicine.
idiomatic collocationUống nước nhớ nguồn.When drinking water, remember its source—remember those to whom you owe gratitude.

The proverb Uống nước nhớ nguồn is a culturally central reminder of gratitude (proverbial/literary-neutral). It should be learned as a fixed expression, not generalized into a productive grammar rule.

The object and result answer different questions

— Mẹ uống thuốc chưa? — Mẹ uống rồi, nhưng chưa uống hết cốc nước. — Bác sĩ dặn thuốc này uống thế nào ạ? — Mỗi lần một viên, ngày hai lần, sau bữa ăn. Con đọc lại nhãn giúp mẹ nhé.

— Mom, have you taken your medicine? — Yes, but I haven’t finished the glass of water. — How did the doctor say this medicine should be taken? — One tablet per dose, twice a day, after meals. Read the label to me again, please.

Uống thuốc rồi completes the relevant medication event. Chưa uống hết cốc nước measures a different object and remains incomplete. The dosage frame then supplies amount, frequency, and timing without changing the form uống.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating English “take medicine” with lấy. Lấy means get/take possession, not swallow a dose.

❌ Tôi lấy thuốc sau bữa ăn.

Incorrect for ‘I take medicine after meals’—this says get/take hold of the medicine.

✅ Tôi uống thuốc sau bữa ăn.

I take medicine after meals.

2. Using uống for every treatment. Match the route of administration.

❌ Tôi uống thuốc nhỏ mắt mỗi tối.

Incorrect—the eye drops are not swallowed.

✅ Tôi nhỏ thuốc mắt mỗi tối.

I put in eye drops every evening.

3. Confusing uống xong with uống hết. Event completion does not entail an empty container.

❌ Tôi uống xong rồi, nên trong cốc chắc chắn không còn nước.

Faulty inference—ending the drinking event does not guarantee that the glass is empty.

✅ Tôi uống cạn cốc rồi, nên trong cốc không còn nước.

I drained the glass, so there is no water left in it.

4. Translating “drink soup” word for word. Ordinary soup is eaten; only its broth is naturally drunk.

❌ Tôi uống một bát canh rau.

Unnatural in the ordinary meal sense.

✅ Tôi ăn một bát canh rau rồi uống hết nước canh.

I ate a bowl of vegetable soup and then drank all the broth.

5. Assuming đã uống says what or how much was consumed. Supply the object and result when they matter.

❌ Bà đã uống, vậy chắc chắn bà đã uống hết thuốc.

Faulty inference—đã marks the event as prior but does not supply exhaustive completion.

✅ Bà đã uống một viên nhưng chưa uống hết liều hôm nay.

She has taken one tablet but has not completed today’s dosage.

Key Takeaways

  • Uống takes beverages and medicine that is swallowed; English splits these into drink and take.
  • Medication frames state amount per dose, frequency, and timing, while other routes use bôi, nhỏ, tiêm, or ngậm.
  • Uống hết exhausts a quantity, uống xong closes an event, and uống cạn leaves a vessel empty.
  • Aspect markers locate the drinking/taking event; they do not by themselves identify the object, dosage, or completion.
