Vietnamese hiểu means “understand,” but knowing that translation is not enough. What follows hiểu tells you whether someone grasps a fact, understands a person, has expertise in a subject, or interprets words in a particular way. Vietnamese does not conjugate hiểu: time, completion, and change of understanding are expressed with context, aspect markers, and resultative elements such as ra and được.
This page maps those constructions. The nearby page on biết “know” contrasts knowledge with understanding; nghĩ “think” has its own page and is not interchangeable with hiểu.
The construction map
| Frame | Usual value | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| hiểu + noun/person | understand the object or empathically understand a person | hiểu vấn đề; hiểu con |
| hiểu + clause/question word | grasp propositional content | hiểu anh muốn nói gì |
| hiểu rằng / hiểu là + clause | understand or take it that... | hiểu rằng thời gian có hạn |
| hiểu về + field/topic | have understanding of a domain | hiểu về tài chính |
| hiểu ra / hiểu được | come to understand / manage to understand | cuối cùng cũng hiểu ra |
| hiểu + manner/result | interpret correctly, wrongly, clearly, deeply | hiểu đúng; hiểu lầm; hiểu rõ |
Learn these as frames, not as English equivalents. English “understand about,” “understand someone,” and “understand that...” do not all license the same complements, and neither do their Vietnamese counterparts.
Direct objects: content, systems, and people
A direct noun after hiểu is whatever the subject grasps mentally. It can be an explanation, a rule, a language, or an abstract problem. A person as direct object normally means understanding that person’s feelings, motives, or character—not merely recognizing who they are.
Tôi hiểu quy định rồi, nhưng vẫn chưa biết nộp đơn ở đâu.
I understand the rule now, but I still don't know where to submit the application.
Càng làm việc với chị Lan, tôi càng hiểu cách chị ấy giải quyết vấn đề.
The more I work with Lan, the better I understand how she solves problems.
Bố mẹ không phải lúc nào cũng hiểu con, nhưng họ đang cố lắng nghe.
Parents don't always understand their child, but they are trying to listen.
That last example is relational and often emotional. Tôi biết anh ấy means “I know him/am acquainted with him”; Tôi hiểu anh ấy means “I understand him.” Likewise, biết quy tắc is possessing knowledge of a rule, while hiểu quy tắc is grasping how or why it works.
Clauses and embedded questions
Hiểu readily takes a following clause without an English-style conjunction, especially when the clause contains gì, tại sao, vì sao, thế nào, ai, or bao nhiêu. The question word stays in its ordinary Vietnamese position; there is no English-like inversion.
Tôi hiểu vì sao cô ấy từ chối lời đề nghị đó.
I understand why she declined that offer.
Anh có hiểu tôi đang nói gì không?
Do you understand what I'm saying?
Sau buổi hướng dẫn, mọi người đều hiểu hệ thống hoạt động thế nào.
After the orientation, everyone understood how the system works.
Hiểu rằng + clause explicitly presents the content as a realization or accepted proposition. It is neutral to formal and frequent in careful writing. Hiểu là + clause often means “understand/take it that...” and is very common in speech; it can signal the interpretation the speaker has drawn from what was said.
Chúng tôi hiểu rằng quyết định này sẽ ảnh hưởng đến nhiều gia đình.
We understand that this decision will affect many families. (formal/neutral)
Tôi hiểu là cuộc họp được dời sang chiều thứ Sáu, đúng không?
My understanding is that the meeting has been moved to Friday afternoon, right?
The second sentence invites confirmation of an interpretation. It does not merely report comprehension of vocabulary.
Topics with về and interpretations with theo
With a broad field of knowledge, hiểu về + topic is natural: hiểu về luật lao động, hiểu về văn hóa địa phương. A bare object is also possible, but it may sound more comprehensive. Compare hiểu âm nhạc “understand music” with hiểu về âm nhạc “know about/have an understanding of music.”
Cô ấy hiểu rất rõ về thị trường trong nước.
She understands the domestic market very well.
To make an interpretation explicit, Vietnamese often uses hiểu + object + theo + way or an adverbial result such as hiểu đúng, hiểu sai, and hiểu lầm. Hiểu lầm is the conventional verb “misunderstand”; hiểu sai highlights that an interpretation is incorrect.
Tôi hiểu câu này theo nghĩa bóng, không phải nghĩa đen.
I interpret this sentence figuratively, not literally.
Đừng hiểu lầm nhé, tôi góp ý vì muốn dự án tốt hơn.
Don't misunderstand me; I'm offering feedback because I want the project to improve. (informal/neutral)
Nếu hiểu sai điều khoản này, khách hàng có thể bỏ lỡ thời hạn khiếu nại.
If customers interpret this clause incorrectly, they may miss the complaint deadline. (formal)
Ra, được, rõ, and other resultative elements
Plain hiểu can describe a state. Hiểu ra focuses on the transition into understanding—“figure out,” “realize,” or “finally see.” Hiểu được presents understanding as an achieved possibility, often after difficulty. In negative clauses, không hiểu được can mean that something is incomprehensible or that the speaker cannot manage to understand it.
Đọc đến đoạn cuối, tôi mới hiểu ra vì sao nhân vật ấy bỏ đi.
Only when I reached the final passage did I realize why that character left.
Bà nói hơi nhỏ nhưng tôi vẫn hiểu được ý chính.
She spoke rather softly, but I could still understand the main point.
Hiểu rõ means understand clearly or thoroughly; hiểu sâu means understand deeply and is common in academic or professional contexts. Hiểu thấu “understand to the core” is elevated or literary. Dễ hiểu and khó hiểu are adjectival combinations meaning easy and difficult to understand.
Muốn tư vấn tốt, nhân viên phải hiểu rõ nhu cầu của từng khách hàng.
To give good advice, employees must clearly understand each customer's needs.
Bài báo dùng quá nhiều thuật ngữ nên khá khó hiểu.
The article uses too much terminology, so it is rather hard to understand.
Aspect, time, negation, and questions
Because hiểu is often a mental state, bare đang hiểu is less natural than English “am understanding.” Use đang dần hiểu for an unfolding process. Đã hiểu locates understanding as achieved; hiểu rồi announces a relevant new state. Chưa hiểu means understanding has not yet been reached, while không hiểu simply denies understanding in the context.
Sau vài tuần làm việc thực tế, tôi đang dần hiểu quy trình này.
After a few weeks of practical work, I'm gradually coming to understand this process.
Em chưa hiểu phần này; cô giải thích lại được không ạ?
I don't understand this part yet; could you explain it again, please?
Questions commonly use có...không, đã...chưa, or a content question. A bare Hiểu chưa? is normal from a teacher, parent, or close peer, but tone matters: from a stranger or superior it can sound abrupt. Anh/chị có hiểu ý tôi không ạ? is more deferential.
A five-way reference set
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi hiểu ý bạn. | I understand your point. |
| negative | Tôi không hiểu câu hỏi này. | I do not understand this question. |
| question | Bạn có hiểu vì sao không? | Do you understand why? |
| aspect-marked | Cuối cùng tôi đã hiểu ra rồi. | At last I have figured it out. |
| idiomatic collocation | Hai bên cần hiểu rõ nhau hơn. | The two sides need to understand each other better. |
How the frame changes the reading
— Anh hiểu tiếng Việt không? — Tôi hiểu được phần lớn, nhưng lúc nãy tôi hiểu câu của chị theo nghĩa đen nên hiểu lầm ý chị.
— Do you understand Vietnamese? — I understand most of it, but just now I took what you said literally, so I misunderstood your meaning.
The first hiểu asks about general comprehension of a language. Hiểu được reports achieved ability in the situation. Hiểu...theo nghĩa đen specifies an interpretive route, and hiểu lầm names the wrong result. English uses “understand” throughout, but Vietnamese construction choice makes each relation explicit.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English “understand about” everywhere. Về introduces a field or topic; a specific object normally follows hiểu directly.
❌ Tôi không hiểu về câu cuối.
Awkward for a specific sentence—the topic marker is unnecessary.
✅ Tôi không hiểu câu cuối.
I don't understand the last sentence.
2. Using biết when the intended meaning is deep comprehension. Biết may only assert that the fact or item is known.
❌ Tôi biết cảm giác của bạn.
Wrong for the intended empathetic meaning—this merely says I know of your feeling.
✅ Tôi hiểu cảm giác của bạn.
I understand how you feel.
3. Translating progressive English with bare đang hiểu. Mark the gradual development if understanding is still unfolding.
❌ Tôi đang hiểu vấn đề này.
Unnatural as a direct copy of ‘I am understanding this issue.’
✅ Tôi đang dần hiểu vấn đề này.
I'm gradually coming to understand this issue.
4. Treating hiểu as “think.” An interpretation can follow hiểu là, but an opinion is normally expressed with nghĩ, cho rằng, or another opinion frame.
❌ Tôi hiểu bộ phim này rất hay.
Incorrect for ‘I think this film is very good.’
✅ Tôi nghĩ bộ phim này rất hay.
I think this film is very good.
Key Takeaways
- Hiểu + object/person expresses mental or empathetic understanding; hiểu về + topic describes knowledge of a field.
- A following clause can be bare, introduced by rằng, or framed with conversational là.
- Hiểu ra marks realization, hiểu được achieved comprehension, and hiểu lầm/hiểu sai a wrong interpretation.
- Prefer đang dần hiểu, not a mechanical translation of English progressive “am understanding.”
- Keep hiểu distinct from biết “know” and nghĩ “think.”
