Vietnamese bỏ covers a family of meanings built around separation: someone releases control of something, removes it from a set or location, abandons it, or stops participating in an activity. Depending on its object and particles, it can mean “leave,” “throw away,” “remove,” “omit,” “quit,” or “skip.” The verb itself never conjugates; time and viewpoint come from words such as đã, đang, sẽ, từng, mới, rồi, and from context.
The English word leave is especially dangerous here. Để often means put or leave something in a particular place, while bỏ normally implies separation, rejection, or abandonment. Compare để điện thoại trên bàn “leave the phone on the table” with bỏ điện thoại “give up/discard the phone,” whose exact reading needs context. This page maps the constructions of bỏ; the perception predicate thấy belongs to its own reference page.
Choose a construction, not an English gloss
| Frame | Usual meaning | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| bỏ + object | discard, abandon, omit, quit | bỏ rác, bỏ ý định |
| bỏ + place/person + đi | leave or abandon | bỏ nhà đi, bỏ bạn mà đi |
| bỏ + activity/habit | quit, stop, or drop | bỏ thuốc lá, bỏ học |
| bỏ + particle | particle-specific result | bỏ đi, bỏ ra, bỏ qua, bỏ lại |
| bỏ + item + khỏi/out of a set | remove or exclude | bỏ tên khỏi danh sách |
The object class does much of the interpretive work. With rác “trash,” bỏ is disposal. With thuốc lá “cigarettes,” it is quitting. With một câu “a sentence,” it is omission. With ý định “an intention,” it is abandonment. This is why memorizing bỏ = leave is not enough.
Tôi bỏ mấy tờ giấy cũ vì không dùng nữa.
I threw away the old sheets of paper because I no longer use them.
Sau khi nói chuyện với bác sĩ, anh ấy quyết định bỏ thuốc lá.
After talking to the doctor, he decided to quit smoking.
Discarding, removing, and excluding
For disposal, bỏ may take the unwanted item directly. A destination can follow: bỏ rác vào thùng “put/throw the trash into the bin.” In instructions, bỏ + object + vào + container can simply mean put or add something into a container, especially in everyday speech. In cooking, cho + ingredient + vào is a broadly neutral alternative; bỏ...vào is particularly frequent in colloquial Southern usage (regional: Southern; informal).
Bạn bỏ vỏ chai vào thùng tái chế giúp mình nhé.
Please put the bottle in the recycling bin for me.
Bỏ hạt ra rồi cắt quả thành từng miếng nhỏ.
Remove the seeds, then cut the fruit into small pieces.
Bỏ ra means take or remove something out, but it also has specialized meanings: bỏ tiền ra means spend or put up money, and bỏ thời gian ra means devote time. Bỏ khỏi or the fuller frame bỏ + object + ra khỏi + set/place explicitly marks exclusion.
Ban tổ chức đã bỏ tên tôi khỏi danh sách vì tôi đăng ký quá muộn.
The organizers removed my name from the list because I registered too late.
With part of a text, procedure, or sequence, bỏ means omit or skip. Bỏ qua can mean skip, overlook, ignore, or forgive, according to its object: bỏ qua bước này “skip this step,” bỏ qua lỗi nhỏ “overlook a small error,” and bỏ qua cho ai “forgive someone.”
Nếu đã có tài khoản, bạn có thể bỏ qua bước đăng ký này.
If you already have an account, you can skip this registration step.
Leaving and abandoning
When a person separates from a home, job, relationship, or responsibility, bỏ often carries an abandonment nuance. Bỏ nhà đi means leave home, usually unexpectedly or against others’ wishes. Bỏ việc means quit a job; nghỉ việc is often a more neutral way to say resign or stop working. Bỏ ai can mean leave a partner or abandon someone, so it is much stronger than merely departing from their location.
Cô ấy không bỏ việc; cô ấy chỉ xin nghỉ hai tuần để chăm mẹ.
She did not quit her job; she only took two weeks off to care for her mother.
Đừng bỏ con một mình ở đây, con sợ lắm.
Don’t leave me here alone; I’m really scared.
The particle lại changes the viewpoint. Bỏ lại means leave something or someone behind when moving away: bỏ lại hành lý, bỏ lại quá khứ. The related để lại often focuses on something being left for another person or remaining as a result—để lại lời nhắn “leave a message”—whereas bỏ lại highlights departure or abandonment.
Họ phải bỏ lại chiếc xe bên đường vì động cơ bị hỏng.
They had to leave the car by the roadside because the engine broke down.
Stopping habits and activities
With a habitual activity, course, or practice as its object, bỏ means stop, drop, or quit. Common combinations include bỏ học “drop out/skip school,” bỏ tập “stop training,” bỏ ăn “stop eating or skip meals,” bỏ rượu “give up alcohol,” and bỏ cuộc “give up.” These are collocations; English stop does not license bỏ before every Vietnamese predicate.
Đội mình bị dẫn hai bàn nhưng không ai muốn bỏ cuộc.
Our team was two goals behind, but nobody wanted to give up.
Bỏ học is context-sensitive. It may mean leave school permanently, stop studying a subject, or skip a class. Add time and context when the distinction matters: bỏ một buổi học “miss one class,” bỏ học giữa năm “drop out midyear.” For temporarily stopping an action in progress, dừng or ngừng is normally clearer: ngừng nói “stop talking,” not automatically bỏ nói.
Bạn đừng bỏ ăn chỉ vì đang bận; ít nhất hãy ăn chút gì đó.
Don’t skip meals just because you’re busy; at least eat something.
Particles and fixed collocations
Particles after bỏ are meaning-bearing, not optional translations of English phrasal particles.
| Combination | Core value | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| bỏ đi | discard; leave; ignore | bỏ đôi giày cũ đi |
| bỏ lại | leave behind | bỏ lại đồ đạc |
| bỏ ra | remove; expend | bỏ tiền ra sửa nhà |
| bỏ vào | put/add into | bỏ đá vào cốc |
| bỏ qua | skip, ignore, overlook, forgive | bỏ qua một chi tiết |
| bỏ lỡ | miss an opportunity/event | bỏ lỡ chuyến tàu |
| bỏ mặc | neglect, leave to fend for itself | bỏ mặc vấn đề |
Bỏ đi! can be a sharp imperative meaning “go away!” (informal; potentially rude), but after an object it often means throw that object away: Bỏ cái này đi. Bỏ mặc is stronger than neutral “leave”: it implies failing to care or intervene.
Đừng bỏ lỡ cơ hội gặp trực tiếp nhóm tuyển dụng.
Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the recruitment team in person.
Aspect, negation, and questions
Aspect markers precede unchanged bỏ: đã bỏ “quit/discarded,” đang bỏ “is removing/putting,” sẽ bỏ “will quit/remove,” and từng bỏ “once quit/left.” Sentence-final rồi often presents the separation as completed or newly relevant. With a habitual object, đã bỏ...rồi commonly means the habit has already been given up.
Tôi đã bỏ dùng ứng dụng đó vì nó gửi quá nhiều thông báo.
I stopped using that app because it sent too many notifications.
Negation is normally không bỏ for a statement and đừng bỏ for a prohibition. A có...không question surrounds the predicate phrase; question words remain in their ordinary argument position.
Minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi bỏ những giấy tờ không cần thiết. | I discard unnecessary papers. |
| negative | Tôi không bỏ bản gốc. | I am not discarding the original. |
| question | Bạn có định bỏ khóa học không? | Are you planning to drop the course? |
| aspect-marked | Anh ấy đã bỏ thuốc lá rồi. | He has quit smoking. |
| idiomatic collocation | Đừng bỏ cuộc giữa chừng. | Don’t give up halfway through. |
One exchange, three different separations
— Cậu định bỏ cái bàn này à? — Không, mình chỉ bỏ ngăn kéo bị hỏng đi. Cái bàn vẫn dùng được. Nhưng mình đã bỏ ý định tự sửa rồi; mai mình gọi thợ.
— Are you planning to throw this table away? — No, I’m only discarding the broken drawer. The table is still usable. But I’ve given up the idea of repairing it myself; tomorrow I’ll call a repairer.
The first bỏ asks about discarding the whole table. Bỏ...đi selects one part for removal. Bỏ ý định abandons an abstract plan. No conjugated form distinguishes the readings; objects, particles, aspect, and discourse do.
Common Mistakes
1. Using bỏ for neutral placement. If the object is meant to remain at a location rather than be discarded or abandoned, use để.
❌ Tôi bỏ chìa khóa trên bàn để lát nữa lấy.
Wrong for neutral ‘I left the key on the table’; bỏ suggests discarding or abandoning it.
✅ Tôi để chìa khóa trên bàn để lát nữa lấy.
I left the key on the table to pick it up later.
2. Translating every English “stop” as bỏ. A temporary interruption of an unfolding action normally takes dừng or ngừng.
❌ Khi đèn đỏ, tài xế bỏ lái xe.
Incorrect for ‘the driver stops driving at a red light’; this sounds like abandoning driving altogether.
✅ Khi đèn đỏ, tài xế dừng xe.
At a red light, the driver stops the vehicle.
3. Omitting the result particle in “miss.” Bỏ lỡ is the established combination for missing an opportunity or event.
❌ Tôi bỏ chuyến tàu cuối nên phải gọi taxi.
Incorrect for ‘I missed the last train’; bare bỏ does not express accidental failure to catch it.
✅ Tôi bỏ lỡ chuyến tàu cuối nên phải gọi taxi.
I missed the last train, so I had to call a taxi.
4. Copying English phrasal-verb particles. Vietnamese ra, đi, lại, qua each contribute their own result; choose by the Vietnamese construction.
❌ Họ bỏ qua chiếc xe bên đường rồi đi bộ tiếp.
Wrong if the intended meaning is ‘left the car behind’; bỏ qua means pass over, skip, or overlook.
✅ Họ bỏ lại chiếc xe bên đường rồi đi bộ tiếp.
They left the car behind by the roadside and continued on foot.
Key Takeaways
- Bỏ profiles separation: discard an object, remove an item, abandon a person or plan, or quit a habit.
- Để is usually the neutral choice for leaving an object in a location; bỏ adds rejection, removal, or abandonment.
- The combinations bỏ đi, bỏ lại, bỏ ra, bỏ qua, bỏ lỡ, and bỏ cuộc must be learned with their frames.
- Aspect words surround an invariant predicate: đã bỏ, đang bỏ, sẽ bỏ, bỏ...rồi.
- Map Vietnamese constructions to contexts instead of searching for conjugated forms or one English equivalent.
