Nữa tells the listener to extend an already relevant set or timeline: one more cup, another person, an additional reason, continued action, or a state that no longer continues. Its English translations include more, another, else, again, still, and—in không … nữa—anymore. The stable idea is not one English word but extension beyond a contextual boundary.
That boundary is part of shared knowledge. Một ly nữa assumes one or more drinks are already in view; còn ai nữa? assumes a set of people that may be incomplete; không đợi nữa closes a waiting period. This page concentrates on addition and continuation. Vậy, which turns prior information into a conclusion or conversational close, is reserved for its own dedicated page.
A compact map of the main patterns
| Pattern | Scope | Typical translation | Example idea |
|---|---|---|---|
| quantity/noun phrase + nữa | participant or amount | another, … more | two more days |
| verb phrase + nữa | event | again, further | say it again |
| còn + clause + nữa | continuing or additional proposition | still; also; furthermore | there is also a fee |
| không + predicate + nữa | timeline | no longer; not … anymore | no longer works here |
| question word + nữa | open alternative set | else | who else? |
| time amount + nữa | prospective interval | in … more | in two days |
Cho tôi thêm một bát nữa nhé.
Please give me one more bowl.
Chờ mình năm phút nữa, mình sắp xong rồi.
Wait five more minutes for me; I’m almost done.
Còn ai muốn phát biểu nữa không?
Does anyone else want to speak?
In each sentence, nữa follows the material it extends. English places another before a noun and else after a question word, so English word order offers no single template for Vietnamese.
Addition: one more member of a set
After a quantified phrase, nữa adds to a quantity already established or contextually expected.
Nhóm mình cần thêm hai tình nguyện viên nữa.
Our group needs two more volunteers.
Ngoài tiền thuê nhà, tháng này còn có tiền điện nữa.
Besides the rent, there’s also the electricity bill this month.
The first extends a count. The second adds a proposition to the current list; còn … nữa tells the hearer not to close that list yet. This can carry affect. With a weary voice, còn có tiền điện nữa sounds like one more burden; in an excited list it can mark one more benefit.
Question words plus nữa keep an alternative set open:
Bạn đã đi Huế và Hội An rồi; còn muốn đi đâu nữa?
You’ve already visited Huế and Hội An; where else do you want to go?
The prior destinations are shared information. Đâu nữa asks for an additional member, not simply an unknown location.
Repetition and continuation
After a verb phrase, nữa can request or predict another occurrence. Context distinguishes “again” from “further/more.”
Bạn nói lại câu cuối một lần nữa được không?
Could you say the last sentence one more time?
Đừng giải thích nữa; tôi hiểu rồi.
Don’t explain any further; I understand now.
In the first, an earlier saying event is repeated. In the second, explaining is already underway and nữa marks continuation beyond now. Đừng … nữa directs the hearer to stop extending the activity.
Negation plus nữa often encodes cessation:
Chị Mai không làm ở đây nữa.
Ms. Mai doesn’t work here anymore.
This sentence normally presupposes that she did work here before. Without nữa, Chị Mai không làm ở đây merely denies that she works here; it need not evoke a change from an earlier state. The particle therefore changes information status, not just style.
With chưa … nữa, interpretation depends on the predicate and context; avoid manufacturing a universal formula. Everyday cessation is most transparently expressed by không … nữa, while chưa normally marks “not yet.”
Prospective time: two more days versus for two more days
A time amount with nữa can point forward from the speech time or another reference point.
Hai ngày nữa tôi sẽ nhận kết quả.
I’ll receive the result in two days.
Tôi sẽ ở lại đây thêm hai ngày nữa.
I’ll stay here for two more days.
The first places the event after a two-day interval. The second extends the duration of staying, helped by thêm. This difference is sometimes genuinely ambiguous without aspect, verb meaning, or context; learners should not expect position alone to solve every reading.
Particle stacks and discourse scope
Nữa normally stays close to the amount or event it extends. Sentence-final particles then frame the whole request or stance.
Kể thêm một chuyện nữa đi nhé.
Tell us one more story, okay?
Here một chuyện nữa adds an item, đi advances the telling as the next action, and outer nhé asks for friendly alignment. Reordering these pieces randomly destroys that layered interpretation.
Another common sequence is nữa mà, especially in protest, where nữa adds the relevant event and mà appeals to grounds the listener should recognize. Its naturalness depends strongly on the larger clause; it is not a reusable translation of English again, though.
The following minimal contrasts locate nữa within the broader system:
| Expression | Primary discourse work |
|---|---|
| đi nhé | advance an action, then seek agreement |
| được mà | reassure against doubt |
| hay lắm đấy | make praise emphatically relevant |
| thôi chứ | treat limitation or closure as expected |
| cơ à | recognize a surprising contrastive alternative |
| tôi cũng biết | include the speaker among those who know |
| một lần nữa | add one occurrence to an existing event series |
Particles are not ornamental. They maintain or close sets, project next actions, assign evidence, and negotiate alignment with different scopes.
A dialogue: whether the list is closed
Phương: Mình đặt hai phòng rồi, thế là xong nhé?
Dũng: Chưa đâu. Còn một người nữa vừa xác nhận tham gia.
Phương: Vậy phải đặt thêm một phòng nữa à?
Dũng: Không, phòng lớn ở được ba người mà. Chỉ cần báo khách sạn thêm tên thôi.
Phương: Được, gửi mình hộ chiếu của anh ấy nhé.
The first nữa adds a newly confirmed participant to what Phương treated as a closed guest list. The second adds a room to the booking count, but Dũng rejects that inference. Mà presents room capacity as reassuring grounds. Thôi then limits the required action to adding a name. The dialogue shows how particle choices control shared knowledge and expected next moves.
Register, region, and prosody
These uses of nữa are standard across regions and registers. They occur in informal conversation, neutral reporting, and formal prose. Prosody adds stance: a lengthened nữa in Lại họp nữa à? can convey fatigue or disbelief; neutral delivery merely asks about another meeting. Do not write that attitude into the lexical meaning of nữa itself.
Regional pronunciation varies, including in Huế and other Central varieties, but standard spelling remains nữa, with ư and the ngã tone mark. See Huế pronunciation and lexicon for regional listening guidance. Pronunciation mergers never license writing nửa (“half”) for nữa (“more/again”); those are different words.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English another before the noun
❌ Tôi muốn nữa một cốc trà.
Incorrect—nữa does not take the English prenominal position of ‘another.’
✅ Tôi muốn thêm một cốc trà nữa.
I’d like another cup of tea.
The added unit comes before nữa; thêm can explicitly announce addition.
2. Omitting nữa and losing the change-of-state meaning
✅ Anh ấy không sống ở Hà Nội.
He does not live in Hà Nội. (a grammatical present-time denial, with no necessary earlier state)
✅ Anh ấy không sống ở Hà Nội nữa.
He no longer lives in Hà Nội.
The repair presupposes an earlier period when he did live there.
3. Assigning one English translation to every use
❌ Trong mọi câu, ‘hai ngày nữa’ đều có nghĩa là ‘thêm hai ngày’.
Incorrect—this phrase can locate an event two days from the reference point, not just extend a duration by two days.
✅ Hai ngày nữa chúng ta gặp lại nhé.
Let’s meet again in two days, okay?
Interpret the scope and predicate, not nữa in isolation.
4. Confusing nữa with nửa
❌ Đợi tôi nửa phút nữa.
Wrong if the intended duration is ‘one more minute’; nửa means ‘half.’
✅ Đợi tôi một phút nữa.
Wait one more minute for me.
Tone and vowel quality distinguish two separate words.
5. Scrambling a layered particle stack
❌ Kể thêm một chuyện đi nhé nữa.
Unnatural—the additive marker is stranded outside the directive and alignment layers.
✅ Kể cho bọn trẻ thêm một chuyện nữa đi nhé.
Tell the children one more story, okay?
First form the additional object một chuyện nữa, then apply directive đi, then outer alignment nhé.
Key Takeaways
- Nữa extends a contextual boundary: another item, more time, another event, or continued activity.
- Không … nữa normally marks cessation and evokes an earlier contrasting state.
- Question word + nữa means “who/what/where else” by reopening an alternative set.
- Time expressions can be ambiguous between prospective interval and extended duration; the predicate and thêm help.
- In particle stacks, nữa stays near what it extends, while turn-level stance markers come outside it.
