Tờ for Sheets and Flat Items

Vietnamese tờ counts thin, flexible sheets and many things conventionally understood as paper documents: một tờ giấy “one sheet of paper,” hai tờ báo “two newspapers,” and tờ tiền này “this banknote.” The physical image of a sheet is the category’s center, but conventional usage extends it to publications and document types. As with other classifiers, tờ helps choose a counting unit; it does not mean English a or the by itself.

The basic tờ phrase

For an exact count, use number + tờ + noun. A description and demonstrative follow the noun, and an explicit possessor normally comes afterward with của.

Bạn lấy giúp mình hai tờ giấy trắng trong ngăn kéo nhé.

Could you get me two sheets of white paper from the drawer?

Tờ hóa đơn của bàn số bốn vẫn chưa được thanh toán.

The bill for table four still hasn’t been paid.

The exact interpretation of tờ depends on the noun. With giấy, it counts sheets; with báo, it can count physical newspaper copies or identify a newspaper publication; with tiền, it counts notes rather than monetary value.

💡
Ask what unit you are counting. Tờ counts a sheet, copy, or paper document. A stack, book, amount of money, or page is a different unit and needs a different expression.

The core sheet category

The most transparent use is tờ giấy. Compare bare giấy, which names paper as material or an unbounded need, with a counted sheet.

Máy in hết giấy rồi, bạn biết giấy mới để ở đâu không?

The printer is out of paper; do you know where the new paper is kept?

Tôi chỉ cần một tờ giấy để ghi số điện thoại thôi.

I only need one sheet of paper to write down the phone number.

The first giấy is material-like: no number of sheets matters. The second singles out one sheet, so một tờ is required in neutral speech.

Several larger units can replace tờ and change the quantity:

PhraseUnit
một tờ giấyone sheet of paper
một xấp giấyone stack/bundle of paper
một ram giấyone ream of paper
một cuộn giấyone roll of paper
một mảnh giấyone scrap/piece of paper

These are not stylistic synonyms. Ba tờ giấy is exactly three sheets; ba xấp giấy is three stacks containing an unspecified number of sheets.

Newspapers and publications

Tờ báo can mean a physical newspaper copy or a newspaper as an institution/publication. The surrounding predicate resolves the reading.

Sáng nào ông tôi cũng mua một tờ báo ở đầu ngõ.

Every morning my grandfather buys a newspaper at the end of the lane.

Tờ báo này vừa đăng bài điều tra về chất lượng không khí.

This newspaper has just published an investigation into air quality.

Buying foregrounds a copy; publishing an investigation foregrounds the news organization. This is a conventional extension beyond a literal loose sheet. By contrast, bare đọc báo names the activity “read the newspaper/news” without committing to one copy:

Bố đang uống cà phê và đọc báo ngoài ban công.

Dad is drinking coffee and reading the news on the balcony.

The medium could be paper or, in modern context, sometimes digital. Adding một tờ báo forces an individual publication or copy into focus.

Banknotes: count the note, not the value

With money, tờ counts physical banknotes. Đồng names the currency unit, while a denomination follows the classifier phrase in ordinary expressions such as tờ năm trăm nghìn “a 500,000-đồng note.”

Anh có đổi giúp tôi một tờ năm trăm nghìn thành tiền lẻ được không?

Could you change a 500,000-đồng note into smaller money for me?

Trong ví chỉ còn ba tờ tiền, nhưng tôi không nhớ là mệnh giá bao nhiêu.

There are only three banknotes left in the wallet, but I don’t remember their denominations.

Ba tờ tiền states the number of notes, not their total value. To state an amount, say for example sáu trăm nghìn đồng “600,000 đồng.” To describe three notes of the same denomination, a natural informal phrase is ba tờ hai trăm nghìn “three 200,000-đồng notes.”

Documents and sheet-like objects

Common combinations include tờ khai “declaration/form,” tờ đơn “written application/petition,” tờ lịch “calendar leaf,” tờ rơi “flyer,” and tờ vé số “lottery ticket.” Some of these have become conventional compounds, so their usage is not predictable from shape alone.

Chị điền tờ khai này rồi nộp cùng hộ chiếu ở quầy số sáu.

Please fill in this declaration form and submit it with your passport at counter six.

For other flat objects, tấm may be more natural: tấm ảnh “photograph,” tấm biển “sign,” tấm vé “ticket,” and tấm bản đồ “map.” Broadly, tờ favors thin flexible sheets, paper copies, and documents; tấm favors a flat panel, picture, card-like item, or displayed surface. Actual noun preferences and speaker construal matter, so this is not an exceptionless shape rule. Tờ vé số is conventional, while an admission ticket is commonly tấm vé or simply vé.

A page within a book is trang, not tờ in ordinary page reference: trang mười lăm “page fifteen.” A complete book uses quyển/cuốn, as explained in Quyển and Cuốn for Bound Volumes. Using the correct unit tells the listener whether you mean a loose sheet, one book page, or an entire volume.

Fruit and rounded objects fall outside the sheet-like tờ pattern. They commonly use quả or, especially in Southern usage, trái: một quả cam and một trái cam both count an orange. Those classifiers have their own regional and lexical choices, covered on Quả and Trái for Fruits and Rounded Objects.

Plural markers and discourse accessibility

Vietnamese does not add những whenever English has a plural. Những tờ... selects a relevant, open set; các tờ... often suggests an established or exhaustive set and is common in formal prose.

Những tờ giấy này đã in một mặt rồi, mình dùng lại nhé.

These sheets have already been printed on one side; let’s reuse them.

Các tờ báo lớn đều đưa tin về kết quả cuộc họp.

The major newspapers all reported the meeting’s outcome.

The second is neutral-to-formal journalistic prose and refers broadly to the relevant established publications. For a generic statement about material, use bare giấy: Giấy dễ cháy “Paper burns easily.” For the activity, use bare báo in đọc báo.

Once a sheet-like noun is accessible, tờ can stand alone:

Có bốn tờ trên bàn; tờ có chữ ký là bản gốc.

There are four sheets/documents on the table; the one with the signature is the original.

The noun is inferred from the situation. This ellipsis is neutral, but it requires a context that makes the category clear.

A five-way classifier contrast

PhraseChosen unitMeaning
một con mèoone animate individualone/a cat
hai quyển sáchtwo bound volumestwo books
những người nàyrelevant human setthese people
nhà của tôiexplicit possessormy house
một bát cơmone containerfula bowl of rice

For the target category, compare một tờ giấy “one sheet of paper.” English may use a in both a sheet and a bowl, but Vietnamese selects tờ for the flat sheet and bát for the filled container. Semantic classification and word order do the work that English distributes among articles, count nouns, and of-phrases.

A print-room dialogue

In this neutral informal exchange, classifier presence changes the interpretation:

— Phòng mình còn giấy không? — Còn đúng ba tờ. Bạn lấy một tờ in vé, để lại hai tờ cho cuộc họp chiều nay nhé.

— Does our office have any paper left? — Exactly three sheets. Take one sheet to print the ticket, and leave two for this afternoon’s meeting, okay?

Bare giấy asks whether the material is available at all. Ba tờ, một tờ, and hai tờ then count individual sheets after the noun is recoverable. Repeating giấy each time would be grammatical but unnecessary.

💡
The classifier can remain after its noun has been omitted: tờ này, hai tờ kia, tờ bị rách. The omitted noun must be recoverable; tờ alone does not tell the listener whether you mean paper, a bill, a form, or a banknote.

Common Mistakes

1. Counting a sheet without tờ

❌ Cho tôi một giấy để ghi địa chỉ.

Incorrect for one individual sheet — giấy alone names the material or category.

✅ Cho tôi một tờ giấy để ghi địa chỉ.

Give me a sheet of paper to write down the address.

Một tờ supplies the sheet unit that the numeral counts.

2. Using tờ for a complete book

❌ Tôi mua hai tờ sách cho cháu.

Incorrect for two whole books — tờ suggests sheets, not bound volumes.

✅ Tôi mua hai quyển sách cho cháu.

I bought two books for my niece/nephew/grandchild.

Use quyển/cuốn for books. Use trang sách for a page and tờ giấy for a loose sheet.

3. Assuming a note count states an amount

❌ Tôi có ba tờ tiền, nghĩa là tôi có ba đồng.

Incorrect — tờ counts physical notes, while đồng states currency value.

✅ Tôi có ba tờ hai trăm nghìn, tổng cộng là sáu trăm nghìn đồng.

I have three 200,000-đồng notes, for a total of 600,000 đồng.

The repair distinguishes number of banknotes from monetary amount.

4. Adding những to a generic material noun

❌ Những giấy tái chế thường có màu hơi sẫm.

Unnatural for the intended generalization — những selects contextual items.

✅ Giấy tái chế thường có màu hơi sẫm.

Recycled paper is often slightly dark in color.

Use bare giấy for paper as a general category. Use những tờ giấy tái chế này for these particular recycled sheets.

5. Copying English demonstrative order

❌ Bạn ký này tờ khai giúp tôi.

Incorrect — này follows the classifier–noun phrase.

✅ Bạn ký tờ khai này giúp tôi.

Please sign this declaration form for me.

The neutral sequence is tờ + noun + này, not English “this + noun.”

Key Takeaways

  • Use tờ for individual paper sheets, newspaper copies/publications, banknotes, and conventional paper documents.
  • Distinguish one sheet from a stack, ream, roll, scrap, page, or bound volume.
  • Let bare nouns express materials, activities, or categories when no individual unit matters.
  • Treat tấm, trang, and quyển/cuốn as competing construals with noun-specific preferences, not interchangeable shapes.
  • Put demonstratives after the noun phrase and remember that những/các add set meanings rather than automatic plurality.
