Làm is often introduced as “do” or “make,” but neither English verb predicts its Vietnamese range. It can take an object (làm bài tập “do homework”), introduce an occupation (làm bác sĩ “work as a doctor”), form a causative clause (làm tôi lo “make me worry”), or participate in lexicalized combinations such as làm quen, làm phiền, and làm ơn. Fluency comes from learning the valency of these frames and the substitutions each one permits.
This page maps the làm network. The different uses of có belong on Collocations with Có.
The main frames at a glance
| Frame | Core meaning | Productive examples |
|---|---|---|
| làm + task/product | perform or create | làm bài, làm báo cáo, làm cơm |
| làm + occupation/role | work as, serve as | làm giáo viên, làm trưởng nhóm |
| làm ở/cho + organization | work at/for | làm ở bệnh viện, làm cho công ty |
| làm (cho) + experiencer + predicate | cause a state or event | làm tôi lo, làm cho giá tăng |
| làm + result/direction | complete, redo, do on behalf | làm xong, làm lại, làm hộ |
| lexicalized làm + X | conventional whole | làm quen, làm phiền, làm rõ |
Làm plus a task or product
With a task noun, làm means to perform the task. With a product noun, it can mean to produce or prepare it. The object determines the more precise English translation.
Tối nay tôi phải làm xong bài tập trước khi đi ngủ.
Tonight I have to finish my homework before going to bed.
Mẹ đang làm cơm, còn bố dọn bàn.
Mom is preparing the meal, while Dad is setting the table.
Nhóm tôi đang làm một báo cáo về giao thông đô thị.
My group is preparing a report on urban transport.
The object slot is broad but not unlimited. Làm bài tập, làm báo cáo, làm bánh, and làm thủ tục are established combinations. English make a decision does not license làm một quyết định; Vietnamese normally uses quyết định as a verb or đưa ra quyết định (formal).
Classifiers remain tied to the noun. Một bài tập, một bản báo cáo, and một chiếc bánh select different classifiers; làm does not make generic cái acceptable everywhere.
Occupation, role, and workplace
Làm + occupation presents the activity as someone's work or current role. Là + occupation classifies the person's identity. In many contexts both are true, but their viewpoint differs.
Chị tôi là kiến trúc sư, hiện đang làm trưởng nhóm thiết kế.
My older sister is an architect and currently works as the design team leader.
Anh làm nghề gì? — Tôi làm kỹ thuật viên điện.
What do you do for a living? — I work as an electrical technician.
Add ở for workplace location and cho for the employer or beneficiary of the work:
Lan làm ở bệnh viện tỉnh, còn chồng chị ấy làm cho một công ty dược.
Lan works at the provincial hospital, while her husband works for a pharmaceutical company.
This is a valency contrast: ở + place, cho + employer. Làm công ty occurs in compressed casual speech in some contexts, but learners should use the explicit standard frames when the relationship matters.
Causative làm: bringing about a result
The causative frame is cause + làm (cho) + experiencer/entity + predicate. Cho makes the boundary before the caused clause clearer, especially when that clause is long.
Tin đó làm tôi lo cả đêm.
That news made me worry all night.
Mưa lớn làm cho nhiều tuyến đường bị ngập.
Heavy rain caused many roads to flood.
Cách giải thích của cô làm vấn đề trở nên dễ hiểu hơn.
Her explanation made the issue easier to understand.
Vietnamese does not add a special conjugation to làm. The caused participant comes before the resulting predicate: làm tôi vui, làm giá tăng, làm cửa bật mở. With an intentional agent and a controlled action, a fuller verb such as bắt, khiến, yêu cầu, or cho phép may be more precise; làm is a general causative, not the only one.
Result, repetition, and benefactive slots
After làm, a result or directional element can specify how the task unfolds:
| Combination | Meaning | Substitution logic |
|---|---|---|
| làm xong + object | finish doing | replace object with any completable task |
| làm lại + object | do again / redo | lại scopes over the action |
| làm tiếp | continue doing | the existing task is understood |
| làm giúp/hộ/giùm + person | do for someone | beneficiary follows the helper element |
| làm thay + person | do in someone's place | substitution, not merely assistance |
Phần này sai số liệu rồi, mình phải làm lại thôi.
The figures in this section are wrong; we'll have to redo it.
Nếu cậu bận thì mình làm thay cậu ca sáng.
If you're busy, I'll cover the morning shift in your place.
Làm thay changes who performs a duty. Làm giúp highlights assistance. That distinction affects expectations about responsibility.
Lexicalized combinations: meaning exceeds the parts
Some làm combinations are productive enough to show a pattern but conventional enough that their complement must be learned.
Làm quen with people, places, and activities
Làm quen với + noun/activity means to become acquainted or familiar. Quen với describes the resulting familiarity.
Ngày đầu tiên, cô giáo cho cả lớp làm quen với nhau.
On the first day, the teacher had the whole class get acquainted with one another.
Tôi đang làm quen với nhịp sống ở thành phố mới.
I'm getting used to the pace of life in the new city.
The required connector is với, not a freely chosen particle.
Làm phiền and làm ơn as social actions
Làm phiền + person means to bother or inconvenience someone. It also opens a polite interruption. Làm ơn + verb requests a favor, but it is not a universal translation of English please.
Xin lỗi đã làm phiền anh ngoài giờ làm việc.
I'm sorry for bothering you outside working hours.
Làm ơn giữ cửa giúp tôi với!
Please hold the door for me!
The second is an appeal to a stranger in an immediate situation. With a friend, a shorter giữ cửa giúp mình với is often more natural.
Làm rõ, làm chủ, and làm ăn
Làm rõ + issue means “clarify” (formal/neutral). Làm chủ + skill/situation means “master/control”; làm chủ + enterprise can mean “be the owner.” Làm ăn concerns doing business or making a livelihood and behaves as a lexical unit.
Báo cáo cần làm rõ nguyên nhân của sự chậm trễ.
The report needs to clarify the cause of the delay.
Sau vài tháng, cô ấy đã làm chủ được phần mềm mới.
After a few months, she had mastered the new software.
Dạo này cửa hàng làm ăn khá hơn trước.
The shop has been doing better lately.
The được in làm chủ được presents successful attainment. In làm ăn, neither word retains a fully independent literal meaning; inserting another particle inside the pair destroys the established unit.
Complete turn and embedded clause
Làm gì? can be a complete question meaning “What are you doing?” or, with a challenging tone, “What for?” Embedded after không biết, it is an indirect question.
A: Cuối tuần cậu làm gì? B: Mình về quê thăm bà.
A: What are you doing this weekend? B: I'm going back to my hometown to visit my grandmother.
Máy lại báo lỗi; tôi không biết phải làm gì nữa.
The machine is showing an error again; I don't know what else to do.
The embedded form keeps gì in place. English moves or reshapes question syntax; Vietnamese does not invert a subject or add an auxiliary.
Connected scenario: one verb, four frames
Sáng nay Mai làm việc ở nhà để làm xong bản thiết kế. Một lỗi trong phần mềm làm cô ấy mất gần một giờ. Mai gọi cho Tuấn: ‘Cậu xem giúp mình chỗ này với.’ Tuấn hướng dẫn qua video, rồi Mai làm lại phần cuối. Nhờ vậy, cô ấy làm xong trước giờ họp.
This morning Mai worked at home to finish the design. A software error cost her nearly an hour. Mai called Tuấn: ‘Could you look at this part for me?’ Tuấn guided her by video, and then Mai redid the final section. Thanks to that, she finished before the meeting.
Here làm việc names work, làm xong marks completion, làm... mất is causative, xem giúp asks assistance, and làm lại marks repetition. The repeated surface verb does not have one vague meaning; each frame supplies a different valency and result.
Register and regional variation
The core làm frames are standard across regions. Regional variation is most visible in associated benefactives: hộ is especially common in the north, while giùm is especially common in the south. Formal prose often replaces general làm with a more precise verb—thực hiện nghiên cứu “conduct research,” xây dựng kế hoạch “develop a plan,” gây thiệt hại “cause damage”—but làm rõ remains normal formal Vietnamese. Precision, not prestige, motivates the choice.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English do/make collocations
❌ Chúng tôi phải làm một quyết định hôm nay.
Incorrect calque of ‘make a decision.’
✅ Hôm nay chúng tôi phải quyết định.
We have to decide today.
Vietnamese uses quyết định directly as a verb; formal prose can use đưa ra quyết định.
2. Confusing occupation with identity
❌ Tôi làm người Việt Nam.
Incorrect for stating nationality; làm presents an assumed role or work.
✅ Tôi là người Việt Nam và làm giáo viên.
I am Vietnamese and I work as a teacher.
Use là for identity and làm for occupation here.
3. Replacing the fixed connector after làm quen
❌ Tôi đang làm quen cho công việc mới.
Incorrect connector for becoming familiar with something.
✅ Tôi đang làm quen với công việc mới.
I'm getting used to the new job.
The lexical frame is làm quen với + complement.
4. Using a generic classifier with every làm object
❌ Tôi đã làm xong một cái báo cáo.
Unnatural neutral classifier choice for a report.
✅ Tôi đã làm xong một bản báo cáo.
I have finished a report.
Bản classifies a document or version; cái is not a universal replacement.
5. Treating làm ơn as mandatory please
❌ Mẹ làm ơn đưa con bát cơm nhé.
Over-formulaic in an ordinary close-family exchange.
✅ Mẹ đưa con bát cơm với.
Mom, pass me the bowl of rice, please.
The kinship address and final với already create an appropriate familiar request.
Key Takeaways
Learn làm through frames: task/product, role, workplace, causation, result, and lexicalized combination. Preserve the complement each frame selects—làm ở a workplace, làm cho an employer or caused clause, làm quen với something, and làm thay someone. The network is highly productive, but it is not a license to translate every English do or make with làm.
