Đi and về begin as motion verbs, but their lexical networks extend far beyond English go and return. Đi can introduce an activity (đi khám “go for a medical examination”), follow a verb to remove something from the current sphere (cất đi “put away”), mark gradual change (yếu đi “grow weaker”), or urge an action (nói đi “go on, say it”). Về can orient motion toward home or an established center, direct an object toward that endpoint (gửi về), and introduce a topic (nói về “talk about”).
This page explains those compositional extensions and the conventional combinations they license. Proverbs and balanced four-syllable expressions are reserved for Vietnamese Proverbs and Four-Syllable Expressions.
Position reveals the frame
| Frame | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| đi/về + place | motion away / toward home or center | đi Hà Nội, về nhà |
| đi + activity | leave to participate in an activity | đi học, đi khám, đi ăn |
| motion + directional sequence | specify path | đi vào, đi ra, đi lên |
| verb + đi | away, removal, loss, or urging | mang đi, xóa đi, nói đi |
| property + đi | change away from a prior degree | đỡ đi, yếu đi, nhạt đi |
| verb + về | toward the relevant endpoint | mang về, gửi về, quay về |
| speech/thought + về + topic | about, concerning | nói về, nghĩ về |
Literal orientation: away versus toward a center
Đi normally presents motion away from the speaker's current or adopted reference point. Về presents motion toward home, one's place of origin, a former location, or another established center. The center can shift with the conversation.
Sáng mai tôi đi Đà Nẵng, tối Chủ nhật mới về Hà Nội.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to Đà Nẵng; I won't return to Hanoi until Sunday evening.
Anh đang ở nhà à? Em về ngay đây.
Are you at home? I'm coming home right now.
English may choose come in the second example because the listener is at the destination. Vietnamese chooses về because home is the relevant endpoint. This is why memorizing đi = go, về = return is insufficient.
Destinations often follow without an equivalent of English to: đi Huế, về quê, về nhà. Đến foregrounds arrival at an endpoint and is not required after every motion verb. See Choosing Đi versus Đến.
Đi plus an activity
The productive pattern đi + activity verb means leaving the current setting to engage in that activity. Common substitutions include đi học, đi làm, đi chợ, đi khám, đi chơi, đi ăn, and đi mua sắm.
Chiều nay tôi đi khám răng nên sẽ về muộn.
I'm going to the dentist this afternoon, so I'll be home late.
Tan họp rồi, cả nhóm đi ăn nhé?
The meeting is over; shall the whole group go eat?
Some combinations have conventional breadth. Đi làm can refer to setting out for work or participating in one's regular job routine. Đi học can mean going to class or being enrolled as a student. Context, not tense inflection, supplies the reading.
Means of transport follows another frame: đi xe buýt, đi tàu, đi bộ, or explicit đi bằng xe máy. A bare vehicle noun describes the means; it is not automatically a countable object of đi.
Ngày thường chị đi làm bằng xe buýt hay đi xe máy?
On weekdays, do you go to work by bus or motorbike?
Order contrast: đi ăn versus ăn đi
This minimal contrast shows why đi cannot be treated as a loose word meaning go wherever it appears.
Muộn rồi, mình đi ăn thôi.
It's late; let's go eat.
Món này sắp nguội rồi, ăn đi.
This dish is getting cold; go ahead and eat.
In đi ăn, motion leads to the activity. In ăn đi, final đi urges the listener to carry out ăn; no physical departure is implied. Thôi in đi ăn thôi frames the shared decision “let's just go eat,” whereas đi in ăn đi pushes the action forward.
Other directive substitutions are possible among familiar speakers: nói đi “go on, say it,” thử đi “give it a try,” ngồi xuống đi “sit down.” Tone and address determine whether they sound encouraging or commanding.
Postverbal đi: removal, disappearance, and change
After a transitive verb, đi can direct an object away from the current sphere or conceptual scene:
Những tài liệu mật phải cất đi trước khi khách đến.
The confidential documents must be put away before the visitors arrive.
Nếu đoạn này không cần thiết thì xóa đi.
If this passage isn't necessary, delete it.
The slot is productive with actions compatible with removal: mang đi, vứt đi, cất đi, xóa đi, đem đi. It is not a general aspect marker that can follow any verb.
With a property or state, đi can mark movement away from the earlier degree, often translated as “become” or a comparative:
Sau khi nghỉ vài hôm, giọng anh đã đỡ khàn đi nhiều.
After resting for a few days, your voice has become much less hoarse.
Màu áo nhạt đi sau nhiều lần giặt.
The shirt's color faded after many washes.
Whether the change is positive depends on the property: đỡ đi is improvement, while yếu đi is deterioration. Đi contributes change away from the previous state, not a fixed negative evaluation.
Quên đi is partly lexicalized: it can mean to put something out of mind, stronger than simply failing to remember.
Chuyện cũ rồi, quên đi và bắt đầu lại nhé.
It's in the past; forget it and start again.
Postverbal về: motion toward an endpoint
After a handling or communication verb, về directs the theme toward home, origin, headquarters, recipient community, or another established center.
Nhớ mang sách về thư viện trước thứ Sáu.
Remember to take the books back to the library before Friday.
Chi nhánh đã gửi báo cáo về trụ sở chính.
The branch has sent the report to headquarters.
Mang về differs from mang đi through viewpoint. Imagine two speakers at the office: mang tài liệu đi removes the documents from this office; mang tài liệu về takes them toward the relevant base, perhaps home or headquarters. The physical route alone does not decide the form—the adopted endpoint does.
The lexical combination về hưu means “retire” and is not interpreted as literal return plus an independently usable noun hưu:
Bác sĩ Minh sẽ về hưu vào cuối năm nay.
Dr. Minh will retire at the end of this year.
Because về hưu is conventional, replacing về with đi does not create its opposite.
Về as a topic linker
With verbs of speaking, writing, learning, and thought, về + noun phrase introduces the topic: nói về, viết về, hỏi về, nghĩ về, tìm hiểu về.
Bài báo viết về tác động của du lịch đối với khu phố cổ.
The article discusses the impact of tourism on the old quarter.
Tôi muốn hỏi thêm về điều kiện bảo hành.
I'd like to ask more about the warranty conditions.
In formal prose, về + topic can frame a whole statement: Về vấn đề kinh phí, hội đồng chưa đưa ra quyết định “Regarding funding, the council has not reached a decision” (formal). Related fixed frames include về cơ bản “basically,” về lâu dài “in the long term,” and về mặt + domain “in terms of.” Their meanings are conventional extensions from orientation toward a domain.
Abstract paths with đi
Formal and neutral Vietnamese extends physical paths into processes. Đi đến + outcome presents a deliberative path reaching a result; đi vào + state/domain presents entry into it.
Sau ba vòng thương lượng, hai bên đã đi đến thỏa thuận.
After three rounds of negotiation, the two sides reached an agreement.
Nhà máy mới sẽ đi vào hoạt động trong tháng tới.
The new factory will begin operations next month.
These are constrained collocations. Đi đến kết luận/quyết định/thỏa thuận and đi vào hoạt động/chi tiết/giai đoạn mới are established; learners should not invent an abstract route for every English use of go into.
Complete turn and embedded use
As a complete turn, Về thôi! means “Let's head back/home.” Embedded after a speech verb, it retains that proposed motion:
A: Gần mười một giờ rồi. B: Về thôi!
A: It's nearly eleven. B: Let's head home!
Thấy trời sắp mưa, chị Lan bảo bọn trẻ về thôi.
Seeing that it was about to rain, Lan told the children it was time to head back.
The same surface sequence can be interpreted because the larger clause identifies the speaker, addressees, and adopted center.
Connected dialogue: shifting centers
Huy: Mai cậu đi công tác à? Linh: Ừ, mình đi Đà Nẵng ba ngày. Chiều thứ Năm mình về. Huy: Cậu mang giúp mình hồ sơ này vào chi nhánh nhé. Linh: Được. Họ có tài liệu nào gửi về văn phòng thì mình mang về luôn. Huy: Cảm ơn. Về lịch họp tuần sau, tối nay mình gửi cho cậu.
Huy: Are you going away on business tomorrow? Linh: Yes, I'm going to Đà Nẵng for three days. I'll be back Thursday afternoon. Huy: Please take this file to the branch for me. Linh: Sure. If they have any documents to send back to the office, I'll bring them back too. Huy: Thanks. Regarding next week's meeting schedule, I'll send it to you tonight.
Đi Đà Nẵng launches motion away, về returns to the conversational base, mang... vào follows the path into the branch, gửi về/mang về directs documents toward the office, and final về lịch họp changes from spatial orientation to topic framing.
Register and regional variation
The core frames are nationwide. Pronunciation varies considerably: southern speech may realize initial v differently from northern speech, but standard writing remains về, never a phonetic spelling such as dzề. Final directive particles also vary by region—nhé, nha, and other local forms—but they should be learned with the local address system and intonation. Abstract đi đến, đi vào hoạt động, and topic-fronting về... are especially common in news, workplace, and formal prose.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating “go home” as đi nhà
❌ Tôi đi nhà lúc sáu giờ.
Incorrect: nhà is the home center, and this frame needs về.
✅ Tôi về nhà lúc sáu giờ.
I go home at six.
Vietnamese conceptualizes the movement as return toward home, regardless of English go.
2. Reversing đi ăn and ăn đi
❌ Ăn đi thôi.
Wrong if the intended meaning is ‘let's go out to eat’; this primarily urges someone to eat.
✅ Đi ăn thôi.
Let's go eat.
Position distinguishes motion-to-activity from directive force.
3. Adding a generic classifier to a means of transport
❌ Tôi đi một cái xe buýt đến trường.
Incorrect default frame for traveling by bus.
✅ Tôi đi xe buýt đến trường.
I go to school by bus.
The bare vehicle type follows đi as the means. If counting journeys, use the dedicated classifier chuyến: một chuyến xe buýt.
4. Translating English about with an unrelated preposition
❌ Chúng tôi nói trên kế hoạch mới.
Incorrect for ‘talk about the new plan.’
✅ Chúng tôi nói về kế hoạch mới.
We talked about the new plan.
The conventional topic frame is nói về + topic.
5. Changing the directional element in a lexicalized expression
❌ Ông ấy đi hưu năm ngoái.
Incorrect: the established expression for retire is về hưu.
✅ Ông ấy về hưu năm ngoái.
He retired last year.
The literal opposite of về cannot replace it inside this lexicalized predicate.
Key Takeaways
Use đi/về + place for oriented motion, đi + activity for leaving to participate, verb + đi/về for direction and result, and property + đi for change. Preserve the decisive word order contrast đi ăn versus ăn đi. Learn lexicalized and abstract paths—về hưu, nói về, đi đến thỏa thuận, đi vào hoạt động—with their complement patterns instead of extending English go, come, and about word for word.
