Trước khi “before” and sau khi “after” order one clause relative to another. In Trước khi đi ngủ, tôi kiểm tra cửa, checking the door comes first and sleeping comes later. In Sau khi họp xong, tôi gọi cho anh, the meeting finishes first and the call follows. The connector tells you which event is the temporal reference point; Vietnamese does not need tense inflection to express the sequence.
This page focuses on explicit anteriority and posteriority. Neutral khi is covered on Khi and Temporal Clauses. Trong khi, which expresses overlap or contrast rather than simple ordering, belongs to the next page.
Read the connector from the main event
The clause following trước khi or sau khi is the reference event:
| Frame | Order | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Trước khi A, B | B before A | Trước khi đi, Lan khóa cửa. |
| B trước khi A | B before A | Lan khóa cửa trước khi đi. |
| Sau khi A, B | A before B | Sau khi đến, Lan gọi điện. |
| B sau khi A | A before B | Lan gọi điện sau khi đến. |
Before signing the contract, you should carefully read the penalty clause.
You should carefully read the penalty clause before signing the contract.
The two orders describe the same temporal relation. Fronting the time clause establishes a frame; placing it last keeps the instruction đọc kỹ as the immediate topic and then adds the deadline.
Only after receiving the confirmation email did I book the plane ticket.
Here mới adds “only then,” emphasizing that the booking did not happen earlier. Sau khi alone orders the events; mới gives the delay or threshold pragmatic force.
Shared subjects and explicit subjects
When both clauses have the same understood subject, Vietnamese normally states it once:
Trước khi ra khỏi nhà, tôi luôn kiểm tra bếp ga.
Before leaving home, I always check the gas stove.
Sau khi ăn trưa xong, chúng tôi đi bộ ra bờ hồ.
After finishing lunch, we walked to the lakeside.
The understood subjects of ra khỏi nhà and ăn trưa xong are tôi and chúng tôi respectively. This is ordinary clause chaining, not an infinitive: Vietnamese verbs do not acquire a special non-finite form after these connectors.
State both subjects when they differ:
Trước khi khách đến, nhân viên đã sắp xếp lại phòng họp.
Before the guests arrived, the staff rearranged the meeting room.
After the doctor explained the options, the family decided to continue treatment.
English permits “before leaving” with an understood subject, but Vietnamese zero subjects rely on discourse continuity, not a grammatical participle. If the next overt subject is different, an omitted subordinate subject can become a dangerous dangling interpretation.
Completion: what sau khi does and does not say
Sau khi orders events, but a verb can describe an instantaneous event, a bounded process, or simply the point after an activity. Xong emphasizes completion:
After reading the report, she called the team leader.
After finishing the report, she finally called the team leader.
The first normally implies that the relevant reading occurred before the call, but it need not foreground the last page or complete consumption. Đọc xong explicitly reaches the endpoint, and mới emphasizes that the call waited for it.
Đã can locate the prior event as realized, especially in a formal account, but it is not obligatory merely because English uses a past perfect:
Sau khi hội đồng đã xem xét toàn bộ hồ sơ, chủ tọa công bố kết quả.
After the committee had reviewed the complete file, the chair announced the result.
This is natural formal report style. In conversation, Sau khi hội đồng xem xét xong hồ sơ... may be more direct. Stacking đã...xong rồi is possible when each element has a discourse job, but it should not be automatic padding.
With trước khi, the subordinate event may still be unrealized:
Hãy sao lưu dữ liệu trước khi máy tính tự khởi động lại.
Back up the data before the computer restarts automatically.
The restart is anticipated, not asserted as completed. This is why đã would normally conflict with the intended instruction unless a special retrospective viewpoint were established.
Negation and prevention
Negation can belong to either event. Its position determines the scope:
Tôi chưa đồng ý trước khi luật sư giải thích rõ điều khoản đó.
I did not agree before the lawyer clearly explained that clause.
Đừng vội kết luận trước khi hiểu rõ tình hình.
Do not rush to a conclusion before you fully understand the situation.
The regional or conversational pattern Trước khi chưa hiểu rõ tình hình... also occurs, but many editors avoid it because both trước and chưa place the reference before completion. Another clean option is Khi chưa hiểu rõ tình hình, đừng vội kết luận “When you do not yet understand the situation, do not rush to a conclusion.”
For prevention, trước khi often combines naturally with a command:
Tắt nguồn trước khi tháo nắp thiết bị.
Turn off the power before removing the device cover.
This concise style is common in instructions and technical writing. Both clauses have the same generic understood addressee.
Clause scope and the wider connector system
The four basic models distinguish different clause relations:
| Model | Function |
|---|---|
| Tôi biết rằng anh ấy đến. | complement content after rằng |
| người mà tôi gặp | relative modification after mà |
| nếu trời mưa thì ở nhà | condition and consequence |
They can nest inside the others as long as scope remains clear:
Tôi biết rằng anh ấy đã gọi cho khách hàng trước khi gửi báo cáo.
I know that he called the client before sending the report.
The most natural reading gives both gọi and gửi the subject anh ấy. If someone else sent the report, state that subject. In everyday speech, Tôi biết anh ấy gọi cho khách trước khi gửi báo cáo is lighter; formal rằng makes the complement boundary visible.
The same nesting occurs in reported speech: Lan báo rằng nhóm sẽ gửi kết quả sau khi kiểm tra xong “Lan reported that the team would send the results after finishing its checks.” Here rằng marks the report content; placing sau khi kiểm tra xong after nhóm also makes the shared subject easy to recover.
If you still have questions after reading the instructions, just call me.
Sau khi đọc hướng dẫn is inside the conditional situation. The paired nếu...thì marks the larger logic, though thì could be omitted in fluid speech.
Cause and sequence should not be confused. Sau khi mất điện, cuộc họp bị hoãn places the postponement after the outage but merely invites a causal inference. Vì mất điện nên cuộc họp bị hoãn explicitly asserts the cause. A careful writer chooses the relation that can be defended.
Dialogue: who acted first?
A: Chị gửi hợp đồng trước khi luật sư xem à?
A: Did you send the contract before the lawyer reviewed it? B: No, I sent it only after the lawyer had finished reviewing it.
Changing trước khi to sau khi reverses the order. B also states luật sư as the subordinate subject and tôi as the main subject, while xong...mới makes the completed review a strict prerequisite.
A: Sau khi họp mình đi ăn nhé?
A: Shall we go eat after the meeting? B: Sure, but before we go, remember to send everyone the minutes.
This natural exchange shows how speakers omit shared subjects and predictable nouns. Sau khi họp means after the meeting; trước khi đi shares the conversational “we” subject. Nhưng marks contrast between agreement and an added requirement.
Register and information flow
Both connectors are neutral across registers. Formal prose may use heavier alternatives such as trước thời điểm..., sau thời điểm..., or nominal sau khi hoàn tất việc..., but those are not automatically more precise. In speech, rồi often chains completed events: Họp xong rồi mình đi ăn “We’ll finish the meeting and then eat.” That compact sequence is natural because xong rồi supplies the boundary.
In a longer narrative, one explicit connector can organize a chain:
Sau khi xuống tàu, chúng tôi gửi hành lý ở khách sạn, ăn sáng rồi mới bắt đầu tham quan.
After getting off the train, we left our luggage at the hotel, had breakfast, and only then began sightseeing.
Vietnamese does not need sau khi before every action. Bare juxtaposition plus rồi and mới provides a clear sequence and keeps the paragraph moving.
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing the event order
❌ Sau khi lên máy bay, hành khách xuất trình thẻ lên máy bay ở cửa.
Wrong for the intended procedure: it says passengers show the boarding pass after boarding.
✅ Trước khi lên máy bay, hành khách xuất trình thẻ lên máy bay ở cửa.
Before boarding the plane, passengers show their boarding passes at the gate.
Read trước/sau from the perspective of the main event rather than copying English word by word.
2. Leaving a changed subject implicit
Ambiguous for ‘after the patient called’: the omitted caller may be understood as the doctor.
After the patient called, the doctor scheduled an appointment.
The explicit subordinate subject prevents a dangling interpretation.
3. Adding đã because English has “had”
Overloaded in a neutral narrative: sequence, completion, and past marking are all repeated without contrast.
✅ Ăn trưa xong, tôi quay lại văn phòng.
After finishing lunch, I returned to the office.
The short clause chain is natural because xong gives completion and context gives past time.
4. Using rằng in a relative instead of mà
Incorrect for ‘the report that I sent after the meeting’: rằng introduces content, not a relative modifier.
✅ báo cáo mà tôi gửi sau khi họp
the report that I sent after the meeting
In casual speech, báo cáo tôi gửi sau khi họp is also natural. The temporal phrase remains inside the relative.
5. Mismatching a conditional pair
❌ Nếu đọc xong hướng dẫn nên vẫn còn thắc mắc, hãy gọi cho tôi.
Incorrect: nếu opens a condition, but nên marks a causal result.
If you still have questions after finishing the instructions, call me.
The repaired sentence uses nếu...thì for the outer conditional and sau khi for the inner temporal order. Contrastive mà vẫn highlights that questions remain despite reading.
Key Takeaways
- Trước khi A, B places B before A; sau khi A, B places A before B.
- The temporal clause can come first as a frame or last as an added timing specification.
- Omit a shared subject when it is obvious, but state both subjects when the actor changes.
- Xong foregrounds completion, mới means “only then,” and đã is optional aspectual marking—not a translation of every English past perfect.
- Sequence can suggest cause, but only a causal construction such as vì...nên explicitly asserts it.
