Hễ...thì presents one situation as a dependable trigger for another: Hễ trời mưa thì đường này ngập means “Whenever it rains, this street floods.” Unlike neutral nếu...thì, which asks what follows if a possibility happens, hễ...thì generalizes across occasions. It often conveys “whenever,” “every time,” or “as soon as,” depending on the predicates and context.
This is not merely a more advanced synonym for if. Its communicative value is categorical: the speaker treats the P-to-Q connection as a rule, habit, repeated reaction, or standing policy. The full pair explicitly maps that relation, while là, zero marking, and particles such as cứ, đều, and lại can shape a more conversational clause chain. Counterfactual wishing with giá mà is reserved for Giá Mà and Counterfactual Wishes.
The core habitual frame
The basic pattern is:
Hễ + recurring trigger, thì + characteristic result.
Hễ trời trở lạnh thì bà tôi lại đau đầu gối.
Whenever the weather turns cold, my grandmother's knee hurts again.
Whenever I hear this song, I remember my university days.
Hễ con bé thức dậy thì cả nhà đều biết.
Whenever the little girl wakes up, the whole household knows.
Lại highlights recurrence, and đều says the generalization applies on every relevant occasion or to every relevant participant. Neither is obligatory; hễ itself already invites a repeated or lawlike interpretation.
The sequence can also describe an immediate, regular transition:
Hễ tan học là bọn trẻ chạy thẳng ra sân bóng.
As soon as school lets out, the children run straight to the football field.
Here là marks the onset of the result in a vivid, conversational way. The sentence describes a recognizable routine, not a single unknown dismissal.
Thì, là, and lighter result marking
The result side is not fixed to one word. Thì gives a neutral conditional boundary; là often makes the result sound immediate or characteristic; zero is possible when the rhythm and meaning remain clear.
| Pattern | Typical value | Register |
|---|---|---|
| hễ P thì Q | explicit recurring condition and result | neutral; speech and writing |
| hễ P là Q | immediate or characteristic result | neutral to informal |
| hễ P, Q | result inferred without an overt boundary marker | compact; usually conversational or rhetorical |
| hễ P thì cứ Q | standing permission, instruction, or repeated response | neutral, frequent in speech |
| hễ ai P thì người đó Q | universal rule applying to any qualifying person | neutral to careful exposition |
Whenever you need help, just call me; don't hesitate.
Every time the end of the month comes around, the shop gets packed again.
Everyone who enters the laboratory must wear safety glasses.
In the last example, ai...người đó distributes the rule over any entrant. In a safety manual, more compact Bất kỳ ai vào phòng thí nghiệm đều phải đeo kính bảo hộ is also suitable. Hễ...thì foregrounds the triggering event rather than the class of people.
Hễ versus nếu
The core contrast is not formality but quantification over occasions.
Nếu mai trời mưa thì chúng ta sẽ ở nhà.
If it rains tomorrow, we'll stay home.
Hễ trời mưa thì chúng tôi ở nhà.
Whenever it rains, we stay home.
The first concerns one unresolved future day. The second describes a habit or standing rule. A future policy can still take hễ because it establishes repeated triggers from now on:
Từ tuần sau, hễ khách yêu cầu hoàn tiền thì nhân viên phải báo quản lý.
Starting next week, whenever a customer requests a refund, staff must notify a manager.
This is future in calendar time but habitual in internal structure. Conversely, a past narrative can use hễ for repetition:
Hồi nhỏ, hễ mất điện là cả xóm mang ghế ra ngồi trước cửa.
When I was a child, whenever the power went out, the whole neighborhood brought chairs outside and sat by their doors.
Vietnamese does not change the verbs for present or past habituality; từ tuần sau, hồi nhỏ, and discourse context locate the generalization in time.
Habit, disposition, and unwanted recurrence
Hễ...thì can characterize a person's regular response. Because categorical descriptions can sound critical, particles and word choice affect politeness.
Whenever he receives criticism, he assumes people do not respect him.
Whenever Lan sees someone who needs help, she stops to ask what they need.
The first sounds like criticism, reinforced by lại. The second praises a disposition, reinforced by đều. An English speaker may hear if as cautious, but hễ often commits the speaker to a stronger generalization. Do not use it about a person's behavior unless that generalization is justified.
Negative results are equally possible:
Hễ uống cà phê sau sáu giờ tối là tôi không ngủ được.
Whenever I drink coffee after six in the evening, I can't sleep.
The negative belongs to Q. Hễ không uống cà phê... would instead make not drinking coffee the trigger.
The wider complex-sentence system
These minimal models identify four different clause relations:
| Model | Function |
|---|---|
| Tôi biết rằng anh ấy đến. | rằng introduces what is known |
| hễ trời mưa thì đường ngập | hễ...thì presents a recurring trigger and result |
The difference between cause and habitual condition can be subtle. Vì trời mưa nên đường ngập describes rain as the cause on a particular occasion. Hễ trời mưa thì đường ngập generalizes across occasions; it may imply a causal link, but its grammatical contribution is recurrence.
Purpose remains separate:
Hễ đi công tác thì tôi tải sẵn bản đồ để dùng khi mất mạng.
Whenever I travel for work, I download the map in advance to use when there is no connection.
Hễ...thì states the routine; để gives the purpose of downloading; khi locates possible use in time. One sentence can contain all three as long as each has clear scope.
Concession says a result holds despite a circumstance rather than whenever it occurs:
Hễ trời mưa thì cô ấy mang ô; dù mưa nhỏ, cô ấy vẫn mang theo.
Whenever it rains, she carries an umbrella; even if the rain is light, she still takes one.
The first generalizes. Dù...vẫn then removes a possible exception.
In reports, relatives, and clause chains
Careful reported speech can embed a habitual rule with rằng; everyday reports usually prefer là or zero.
Nội quy nêu rõ rằng hễ chuông báo cháy vang lên thì mọi người phải rời khỏi tòa nhà.
The regulations clearly state that whenever the fire alarm sounds, everyone must leave the building.
Mẹ bảo hễ về muộn thì nhớ nhắn tin.
Mom said to remember to text whenever I come home late.
Formal rằng suits written regulations. In the family report, zero marking after bảo is natural. Do not add rằng simply because English uses that.
A habitual condition may appear inside a relative:
Đó là chiếc máy mà hễ chạy quá hai giờ thì tự động tắt.
That is the machine that automatically shuts down whenever it runs for more than two hours.
Mà marks the outer relative boundary. Hễ...thì gives the machine's recurring behavior. It is not an English relative-pronoun sequence: mà does not occupy the subject position, and ai or cái nào should not be inserted.
In a clause chain, Q can include several actions by one continuing subject:
Hễ có đơn mới thì chị Hương kiểm tra địa chỉ, in phiếu rồi giao cho kho xử lý.
Whenever a new order comes in, Hương checks the address, prints the slip, and then passes it to the warehouse for processing.
If a new participant acts, name it. Otherwise listeners extend chị Hương across the chain. For a long procedure, repeat the subject or split the sentence rather than relying on one remote hễ to govern many paragraphs.
Dialogue: a one-time possibility or a standing rule?
A: If it rains tomorrow, are we canceling the photo shoot? B: If it rains tomorrow, we'll move it to Sunday. Starting next month, whenever a storm is forecast, we'll postpone proactively.
The first decision concerns one open event, so nếu...thì fits. The later sentence announces a repeatable policy, so hễ...là changes the interpretation from contingency to standing rule.
Common Mistakes
1. Using hễ for a single unresolved event
Awkward for one specific tomorrow: hễ normally generalizes across occasions.
If it rains tomorrow, we'll postpone the trip.
Use hễ if the sentence states an ongoing rule: Hễ trời mưa thì chuyến tham quan ngoài trời sẽ bị hoãn.
2. Pairing hễ with causal nên
❌ Hễ trời mưa nên đường này ngập.
Incorrect as a standard pair: hễ opens a habitual condition, but nên presents a causal consequence.
✅ Hễ trời mưa thì đường này ngập.
Whenever it rains, this street floods.
Incorrect: ai is interrogative and cannot serve as English relative ‘who.’
This is someone who remains calm whenever difficulties arise.
The head người supplies the understood subject; no relative pronoun is required.
4. Overusing rằng in casual speech
Tớ nhớ rằng hễ cậu đói thì cậu cáu.
I remember that whenever you're hungry, you get irritable. (grammatical but overly report-like in a casual personal remark)
✅ Tớ nhớ cứ hễ đói là cậu lại cáu.
I remember that whenever you're hungry, you get irritable.
Conversational cứ hễ...là...lại vividly describes recurrence. Formal rằng remains useful when a long complement boundary needs marking.
5. Tangling habitual, conditional, and causal pairs
❌ Hễ khách gọi nếu máy lỗi nên nhân viên báo quản lý.
Incorrect: three relation markers compete without clear boundaries.
✅ Hễ khách gọi báo máy lỗi thì nhân viên phải báo quản lý.
Whenever a customer calls to report a machine fault, staff must notify a manager.
The repair makes the whole customer call the recurring trigger and gives it one clear result.
Key Takeaways
- Hễ...thì/là presents a habit, recurring trigger, disposition, or standing rule.
- Nếu...thì is the neutral choice for one open possibility; hễ generalizes across relevant occasions.
- Lại, đều, and cứ can reinforce recurrence, universality, or a standing response without replacing the core relation.
- Keep outer complements and relatives distinct from inner habitual, causal, concessive, temporal, and purpose links.
- Because hễ sounds categorical, use it only when the repeated pattern or policy is genuinely intended.
