Before a predicate, mới often presents an event as recent: Tôi mới đến means “I just arrived / I arrived only recently.” Its deeper contribution is scalar: the event lies near the relevant boundary, or the progress reached is only a limited point. That is why mới can mean temporal “just/recently” in one sentence and restrictive “only” in another.
Vietnamese does not use mới as a past-tense suffix. Verbs do not conjugate, and a recent interpretation emerges from the predicate's event type, the time phrase, the conversation, and other viewpoint material. This page focuses on recent completion with mới. The especially immediate marker vừa is treated on Vừa for Immediate Past.
Mới in this use is neutral across (informal) speech and (formal) prose. Sentence-final thôi and particles such as mà often make the utterance more conversational.
The basic recent-event pattern
The normal order is:
subject + mới + predicate
Tôi mới đến, nên chưa biết phòng họp ở đâu.
I just arrived, so I don't know where the meeting room is yet.
Chị Mai mới gọi cho anh cách đây vài phút.
Mai called you just a few minutes ago.
Bọn trẻ mới ngủ; mình nói nhỏ thôi.
The children have just gone to sleep; let's speak quietly.
With bounded events such as đến “arrive,” gọi “call,” and ngủ understood as “fall asleep,” mới readily yields a recently completed or newly reached event. It locates the event near a contextual boundary—usually now, but not necessarily.
Recency is relative, not measured by a clock
The interval licensed by mới depends on the topic. A few seconds may be recent for a phone call; a year can be recent for moving countries.
Gia đình tôi mới chuyển vào Đà Nẵng năm ngoái.
My family moved to Đà Nẵng only last year.
Công ty này mới thành lập được ba năm.
This company was established only three years ago / has been established for only three years.
The second sentence combines mới with được ba năm, measuring the limited span reached since establishment. English may choose a present perfect, but Vietnamese has not conjugated thành lập. The construction evaluates three years as a short period relative to expectation.
A narrative can supply a past boundary:
Khi tôi đến bệnh viện, bác sĩ mới rời phòng mổ được năm phút.
When I reached the hospital, the doctor had left the operating room only five minutes earlier.
English uses had left because the event precedes another past event. Vietnamese lets khi tôi đến bệnh viện establish the reference point, and mới... được năm phút measures backward from it.
Mới also means only this far
With quantities, stages, or ongoing activities, mới often says that progress has reached only a low point. Completion then comes from the predicate, not from mới itself.
Tôi mới đọc được hai chương, nên chưa thể nhận xét cả cuốn sách.
I've only managed to read two chapters, so I can't evaluate the whole book yet.
Cuộc họp mới bắt đầu được mười phút thì mất điện.
The meeting had been under way for only ten minutes when the power went out.
Em mới làm xong phần mở đầu thôi.
I've only just finished the introduction.
In mới đọc được hai chương, the reading activity has reached two chapters; the whole book is not complete. In mới làm xong, the result word xong supplies completion, while mới places that completion near the boundary. Thôi reinforces “only” in (informal) speech.
This distinction matters because an atelic activity may not be complete at all:
Tôi mới học tiếng Việt được sáu tháng.
I have been learning Vietnamese for only six months.
The learning continues. Mới evaluates its duration as short; it does not close the event.
Scope and position
Recent-event mới normally stands immediately before the predicate or the constituent it focuses. Moving it changes the focus and may change the meaning.
| Pattern | Natural interpretation |
|---|---|
| Tôi mới mua cuốn sách. | I only recently bought the book. |
| Tôi mới mua một cuốn sách. | I just bought a book; context may also stress the limited quantity. |
| Tôi mua mới cuốn sách. | Not the neutral recent-event order; mới may instead be parsed as “new” in another structure. |
| Tôi mới mua được một cuốn. | I have managed to buy only one so far. |
| Tôi mới mua xong. | I have only just finished buying it/them. |
Postverbal xong marks a completed endpoint, được + quantity/duration measures achievement, and clause-final rồi can present completion or a new state. These elements are not interchangeable with preverbal mới.
Tôi ăn rồi; còn chị thì sao?
I've eaten already; what about you?
Tôi mới ăn xong, nên chưa muốn uống cà phê ngay.
I've just finished eating, so I don't want coffee right away.
The first sentence foregrounds the completed, currently relevant fact. The second foregrounds how recent the completion is. Saying that rồi simply equals the English perfect misses this difference.
Mới versus vừa
Both can translate just, but their centers of gravity differ:
| Form | Main effect | Typical implication |
|---|---|---|
| mới đến | recent arrival, often “only recently” | near a boundary or later/less advanced than expected |
| vừa đến | immediate prior arrival | arrival directly precedes the reference point |
| vừa mới đến | emphatically very recent arrival | recency is especially salient |
Tôi mới chuyển đến Hà Nội, nên vẫn đang tìm nhà lâu dài.
I moved to Hà Nội only recently, so I'm still looking for a long-term home.
Here the move could have been days or months ago. Vừa chuyển đến would normally invite a much tighter “just now/just recently” reading. The two overlap in real speech, but they are not separate conjugated tenses.
Orientation among time and aspect markers
| Form | Contribution |
|---|---|
| đã ăn | prior realization |
| đang ăn | ongoing phase |
| sẽ ăn | projected event |
| ăn rồi | completion or changed state |
| từng đi | prior experience |
| mới đến | recent or “only now” arrival |
| vừa đến | immediately prior arrival |
| chưa xong | endpoint not yet reached |
| sắp mưa | imminent rain |
| vẫn chờ | continued waiting |
The same verb can appear without a marker when an adverbial or narrative already supplies time: Tôi đến hôm qua “I arrived yesterday.” Adding mới changes more than tense: Tôi mới đến hôm qua evaluates yesterday as surprisingly or relevantly recent.
A dialogue where mới changes the interpretation
— Cậu đọc xong bản thảo chưa? — Mình mới đọc được ba chương thôi. Tối qua mình mới nhận được bản thảo, mà sáng nay lại phải đi họp. — Vậy cứ đọc tiếp đi; thứ Hai mới cần gửi nhận xét.
— Have you finished reading the manuscript? — I've only managed three chapters. I only received the manuscript last night, and this morning I had to attend a meeting. — Then keep reading; the comments aren't needed until Monday.
The first mới marks limited progress, not completion. The second presents receipt as recent and explains the limitation. In thứ Hai mới cần gửi, mới has a later-than-now “not until Monday” focus rather than recent-past meaning. The shared logic is proximity to a boundary plus exclusion of earlier or greater alternatives.
Quick decision aid
- For a simply dated event, use the date: Tôi đến hôm qua.
- To evaluate that event as recent or “only recently,” add preverbal mới: Tôi mới đến hôm qua.
- To mark an endpoint explicitly, add result material: mới làm xong.
- To emphasize immediate temporal adjacency, consider vừa rather than neutral mới.
- To show limited progress, use mới + predicate + được + measure: mới đọc được hai chương.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting recent-event mới after the verb. Its neutral aspectual position is before the predicate.
❌ Tôi đến mới năm phút trước.
Incorrect order for ‘I arrived just five minutes ago.’
✅ Tôi mới đến cách đây năm phút.
I arrived just five minutes ago.
2. Treating mới as proof of completion with an ongoing activity. Add an endpoint if completion matters.
❌ Tôi mới viết báo cáo, nên báo cáo chắc chắn đã xong.
Incorrect inference: mới viết does not by itself guarantee that the report is finished.
✅ Tôi mới viết xong báo cáo.
I have just finished writing the report.
3. Adding đã because English uses a past or perfect form. Mới already supplies the relevant recent viewpoint.
❌ Tôi đã mới đến.
Unnatural stacking for a neutral ‘I just arrived.’
✅ Tôi mới đến.
I just arrived.
4. Adding rồi as a mechanical perfect auxiliary. Use it only when completion or change is part of the message.
❌ Tôi mới đến rồi cách đây hai phút.
Clumsy marker stacking for a simple recent arrival.
✅ Tôi mới đến cách đây hai phút.
I arrived just two minutes ago.
5. Assuming mới and vừa always make the same claim. Use vừa when immediate precedence is central.
❌ Tôi mới chuyển sang Canada năm ngoái, nên mới luôn có nghĩa là ‘moments ago’.
Incorrect analysis: with a life change, last year can still count as recent.
✅ Tôi mới chuyển sang Canada năm ngoái.
I moved to Canada only last year.
Key Takeaways
- Preverbal mới presents an event or stage as close to a contextual boundary and often as later, newer, or more limited than expected.
- With bounded predicates it commonly conveys recent completion; with activities and measures it may express limited progress instead.
- Mới is broader than immediate vừa, and their overlap does not make them tense forms.
- Result words such as xong, achievement được, temporal expressions, and discourse determine whether the event is complete.
- Do not add đã or rồi merely to imitate an English past or perfect form.
