ทัณฑฆาต ์ and Silent Letters

The mark ์ is ทัณฑฆาต (thanthakhat), a cancellation mark placed over a consonant to signal that written material is not pronounced in the ordinary reading. It is common in learned Pali/Sanskrit vocabulary, names, and loanwords. Silent letters preserve spelling history, while modern pronunciation has simplified the end of the syllable.

This page teaches standard Central Thai. The spellings occur across formal and everyday registers; only individual words carry special register labels. Historical source-language pronunciation is background, not a model for modern Thai speech.

Mark versus marked letter

Precise Thai terminology distinguishes the mark ทัณฑฆาต from the silent consonant or group, commonly called ตัวการันต์. Everyday explanations sometimes call the mark itself การันต์, but keeping the terms separate makes scope easier to discuss.

ทัณฑฆาต is U+0E4C THAI CHARACTER THANTHAKHAT. It is a combining mark entered after its base consonant and rendered above it. In ร์, for example, the stored order is ร followed by ์.

คืนนี้พระจันทร์สวยมาก

💡
First remove the silent material from the pronunciation analysis—not from the spelling. Then identify the onset, vowel, and actual final sound of the spoken syllable.

A one-letter cancellation

In ศุกร์ “Friday,” ร bears ์ and is silent. The initial is ศ, ุ supplies the vowel, and ก gives the final /k/. The visual order ศ + ุ + ก + ร + ์ contains more letters than the spoken form suk.

เจอกันวันศุกร์นะ

choe kan wan suk na

See you on Friday. (informal)

In สัตว์ “animal,” ว์ is silent and ต is the pronounced final /t/. The marked ว still belongs to the standard spelling and must not be deleted in writing.

สัตว์ตัวนี้ต้องการน้ำ

sat tua ni tongkan nam

This animal needs water.

ห้ามนำสัตว์เลี้ยงเข้ามา

ham nam sat liang khao ma

No pets allowed inside. (formal/public notice)

The classifier ตัว is correct for an animal. ทัณฑฆาต affects pronunciation, not the noun’s grammar or classifier behavior.

Cancellation can cover a final group

จันทร์ “moon; Monday in วันจันทร์” shows why “silence only the consonant directly under the mark” is too simple. The mark is written over ร, but the established modern reading suppresses the final written group ทร์ after น. The pronounced syllable ends in /n/.

วันจันทร์ฉันทำงานที่บ้าน

wan chan chan tham ngan thi ban

On Monday I work from home.

คืนนี้พระจันทร์เต็มดวง

khuen ni phra chan tem duang

The moon is full tonight.

Scope is lexical. A reader uses the mark plus knowledge of the word’s established spelling; there is no universal instruction to erase every consonant to the left. This is a genuine memorization burden, especially in learned vocabulary.

💡
When ์ appears on the last consonant of a written cluster, consult the whole ending. In จันทร์, reading only the marked ร as silent still leaves an incorrect extra ท sound.

Common modern vocabulary, not museum spelling

Silent historical material occurs in very ordinary words. แพทย์ “physician” is relatively (formal/professional), while หมอ is its everyday counterpart. โทรศัพท์ “telephone” and รถยนต์ “car; motor vehicle” are neutral modern vocabulary.

แพทย์นัดตรวจตอนเช้า

phaet nat truat ton chao

The physician scheduled the examination for the morning. (professional)

ฉันหาโทรศัพท์ไม่เจอ

chan ha thorasap mai choe

I can't find my phone.

รถยนต์คันนี้ประหยัดน้ำมัน

rotyon khan ni prayat namman

This car is fuel-efficient.

The silent letters still distinguish conventional spellings and reveal etymological families. Removing them because they are inaudible produces misspellings, just as deleting the silent letters from English knight would.

Loans and established Thai pronunciation

Thai also uses ์ in loans to suppress consonants that the Thai syllable structure does not pronounce in the same way as the source. เบอร์ “number” is common (informal/neutral) vocabulary, especially for a phone number, and ฟิล์ม “film” suppresses ล while retaining final ม.

ขอเบอร์โทรหน่อยได้ไหม

kho boe tho noi dai mai

Could I have your phone number? (informal)

ฟิล์มเรื่องนี้หาดูยาก

fim rueang ni ha du yak

This film is hard to find.

RTGS transcribes the modern Thai pronunciation, not every source-language consonant. Thus it omits the silent letters too. This makes it useful for confirming what is spoken but useless for reconstructing whether a Thai spelling contains ์.

Reading and tone consequences

ทัณฑฆาต is not a tone mark. It tells you which material to exclude from ordinary pronunciation; tone still depends on the initial consonant class, the actual spoken final category, vowel length where relevant, and any genuine tone mark.

In ศุกร์, the spoken final is /k/ from ก, so the syllable is dead. In จันทร์, the spoken final is /n/, so the coda is sonorant and the syllable is live. Counting the silent ร or ทร์ as extra spoken syllables would corrupt both segmentation and tone analysis.

The final-stops page develops the pronounced coda categories after silent material has been removed.

A real opening-hours notice

เปิดวันจันทร์ถึงวันศุกร์ “Open Monday through Friday” is a natural shop or office notice. Both weekday names contain ทัณฑฆาต, yet neither has an audible /r/ at the end.

เปิดวันจันทร์ถึงวันศุกร์

poet wan chan thueng wan suk

Open Monday through Friday. (public notice)

There is no extra space inside either weekday name. RTGS exposes the spoken forms chan and suk but not their silent spelling history.

Historical and formal restrictions

The mark became especially useful for preserving Indic and later foreign spellings within Thai phonotactics. That historical role does not make every marked word literary or archaic. Conversely, writers cannot add ์ freely wherever casual speech drops a sound. Standard dictionaries determine the spelling.

Some Thai letters are silent without ทัณฑฆาต, and some learned words have multiple pronunciation conventions. The mark is a powerful clue, not a complete etymological reader. When a word is unfamiliar, verify the whole entry rather than guessing the mark’s scope.

Common Mistakes

1. Pronouncing the marked ร

❌ ศุกร์

Incorrect — ร์ contributes no r sound in the standard reading.

✅ ศุกร์

suk

Correct — Friday; ก supplies the final k sound.

2. Deleting a silent letter from spelling

❌ ศุก

Incorrect standard spelling of Friday, even though it resembles the pronunciation.

✅ ศุกร์

suk

Correct — preserve ร์ in writing.

3. Silencing only the letter directly below the mark

❌ จันทร์

Incorrect analysis — pronouncing ท after silencing only ร gives the wrong reading.

✅ จันทร์

chan

Correct — the conventional ทร์ group is silent after final น.

4. Treating ์ as a tone mark

❌ สัตว์

Incorrect analysis — ์ does not independently assign a spoken tone.

✅ สัตว์

sat

Correct — exclude ว์, then calculate from the remaining syllable structure.

Key Takeaways

ทัณฑฆาต is U+0E4C, while ตัวการันต์ is the silent letter or group it helps identify. Preserve marked material in spelling, omit it from the ordinary spoken analysis, and determine the actual final before calculating tone. RTGS likewise omits silent letters, so it cannot reconstruct the historical Thai form.
