Thai allows five sonorant or glide sounds at the end of a syllable: ng, n, m, y, and w. Air can continue through a nasal or the vocal tract remains relatively open through a glide, so these endings pattern as live syllables (คำเป็น, kham pen) rather than dead syllables.
The coda system is standard across registers. Examples are neutral unless marked otherwise. English speakers must learn two separate facts: several Thai letters merge as final n, and final ย or ว belongs closely to the vowel rather than forming an extra syllable. The resulting live/dead contrast is developed further on Live and Dead Syllables.
The five final sonorants
| Final sound | Thai spelling(s) | Letter's initial value(s) | Traditional family | Typical RTGS result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ng | ง — ngo ngu | ng | แม่กง | ng |
| n | ญ ณ น ร ล ฬ | y, n, r, l | แม่กน | n |
| m | ม — mo ma | m | แม่กม | m |
| y glide /j/ | ย — yo yak | y | แม่เกย | usually absorbed into ai, oi, etc. |
| w glide /w/ | ว — wo waen | w | แม่เกอว | usually absorbed into ao, eo, iao, etc. |
The vowel symbol ำ also includes a final m element in its pronunciation, as in น้ำ nam “water,” but ำ is a vowel sign, not a written consonant ม. Keep it as the single character ำ.
Final ng and m: familiar sounds in unfamiliar places
Final ง is the sound at the end of English sing, never a released g. Thai uses the same letter for initial and final ng.
โรงเรียนอยู่ทางซ้าย
rongrian yu thang sai
The school is on the left.
โรง ends in ง, as does ทาง. In both, the tongue closes at the soft palate while voicing continues through the nose. Do not add a final g after the nasal.
คืนนี้ฝนคงตก
khuen ni fon khong tok
It will probably rain tonight.
คง ends in ng and is live. ตก ends in k and is dead. This audible contrast between a sustained nasal and a blocked stop is the phonetic basis of the grammatical labels.
Final ม is close to English m, with the lips closed and voicing continuing through the nose.
ผมจอดรถตรงทางออก
phom chot rot trong thang ok
I parked by the exit.
ผม ends in m; ตรง and ทาง end in ng. None receives an extra vowel after the final consonant.
Six spellings collapse to final n
The most spelling-heavy sonorant family is แม่กน. Its members are ญ ณ น ร ล ฬ, but they all have final n in ordinary Central Thai.
| Final letter | Example | RTGS | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ญ | เชิญ | choen | invite; please |
| ณ | คุณ | khun | you; Mr./Ms. |
| น | บ้าน | ban | house; home |
| ร | อาหาร | ahan | food |
| ล | บอล | bon | ball; football |
| ฬ | วาฬ | wan | whale |
Final spelling is therefore partly lexical. There is no sound-based shortcut that tells you whether an unfamiliar final n is written น, ร, or ล. This is genuinely a memorization problem, though roots and word families make it easier at higher levels.
เชิญนั่งตรงนี้ค่ะ
choen nang trong ni kha
Please sit here.
This is courteous, polite hospitality, natural in both everyday service encounters and more formal settings. เชิญ ends in n spelled ญ, while นั่ง begins with n and ends in ng. The same letters do not have to perform the same syllable role.
อาหารร้านนี้อร่อยมาก
ahan ran ni aroi mak
The food at this restaurant is delicious.
Final ร in อาหาร is n, but initial ร in ร้าน and อร่อย is r. English readers are especially prone to preserving the written r at the end; standard Thai does not.
วาฬตัวนั้นว่ายน้ำเร็วมาก
wan tua nan wai nam reo mak
That whale swims very fast.
วาฬ ends in n spelled ฬ. The word also demonstrates the w onset in วาฬ and ว่าย, as distinct from final w in เร็ว.
Final ย and ว are glides
Final ย and ว do not behave like a separate English consonant pronounced after the vowel. They form a smooth movement within the rhyme. Thai school grammar calls these แม่เกย and แม่เกอว; linguistic descriptions often analyze the result as a diphthong or a vowel-plus-glide sequence.
ฉันขายของออนไลน์
chan khai khong onlai
I sell things online.
ขาย ends in the y glide. Move directly from the vowel toward y; do not append a new syllable such as kha-ya.
แมวตัวนี้ชอบมานอนบนตักฉัน
maeo tua ni chop ma non bon tak chan
This cat likes sleeping on my lap.
แมว ends in the w glide, reflected inside RTGS maeo. RTGS conventions represent the complete rhyme rather than replacing ว mechanically with a Latin w; they are not a letter-by-letter transliteration.
Why sonorant codas are live
Tone calculation needs the spoken final category. Any syllable ending in ng, n, or m is live, regardless of whether its vowel is short or long. The y and w rhyme endings are live as well. The class that controls tone still comes from the initial consonant structure.
Consider บ้าน. Initial บ is mid class; final น is pronounced n and makes the syllable live; ไม้โท ้ then acts under the mid-class live-syllable rule. The fact that น itself is low class when initial is irrelevant here.
บ้านนี้เงียบมาก
ban ni ngiap mak
This house is very quiet.
In เงิน, both the short-looking visual complexity and final น can distract the reader. Analyze in sound order: initial ง + vowel เ-ิ + final น. The coda n makes the syllable live.
เงินเดือนจะเข้าพรุ่งนี้
ngoenduean cha khao phrungni
My salary will be deposited tomorrow.
RTGS cannot mark the tone or vowel length, so it cannot replace this analysis.
In real signage
This is a standard (formal/public signage) label:
ทางออก
thang ok
Exit
ทาง ends in sonorant ng and is live; ออก ends in stop k and is dead. The two-syllable sign makes the contrast visible and audible in the smallest practical context.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding g after final ง
❌ ทางนี้
Incorrect reading — pronouncing ทาง with an English-style final 'ng-g.'
✅ ทางนี้
thang ni
this way — final ง is ng only.
2. Preserving written r or l in final position
❌ อาหารและฟุตบอล
Incorrect reading — ending อาหาร with r or ฟุตบอล with l.
✅ อาหารและฟุตบอล
ahan lae futbon
food and football — final ร and ล are both n.
3. Turning a final glide into another syllable
❌ ฉันขายกาแฟ
Incorrect reading — pronouncing ขาย as two syllables, kha-ya.
✅ ฉันขายกาแฟ
chan khai kafae
I sell coffee — ขาย is one syllable ending in a y glide.
4. Calling every short-vowel syllable dead
❌ เงินสด
Incorrect analysis — classifying เงิน as dead merely because its vowel is short.
✅ เงินสด
ngoen sot
cash — เงิน is live because it ends in n; สด is dead because it ends in t.
5. Using the final letter's consonant class
❌ บ้านฉัน
Incorrect analysis — using low-class final น to calculate บ้าน.
✅ บ้านฉัน
ban chan
my house — mid-class initial บ controls tone, while final น makes the syllable live.
Key Takeaways
- Thai final sonorants are ng, n, m, y, and w.
- ญ ณ น ร ล ฬ all merge as final n.
- ย and ว are glides integrated into the rhyme, not extra syllables.
- Every sonorant coda makes a live syllable; vowel length does not reverse that classification.
- The initial structure supplies consonant class, while the spoken coda supplies live/dead status.
