Thai word order is analytic, but it is not mechanically “subject + verb + object” in every clause. Each predicate carries a lexical participant frame: นอน “sleep” normally selects a sleeper; กิน “eat” selects an eater and optionally an understood food; ให้ “give” relates a giver, theme, and recipient; กลัว “fear” relates an experiencer and stimulus. Speakers can omit recoverable participants or combine predicates, but those discourse choices do not erase the underlying role relations.
English translation is an unreliable guide to Thai valency. English listen to, ask someone, enter a room, and be afraid of use prepositions and objects differently from Thai ฟัง, ถาม, เข้าห้อง, and กลัว. The frame must be learned with the predicate, including which participant may follow directly and which needs a relator or another predicate.
Valency is part of lexical meaning
| Predicate | Core frame | Participant roles | Natural model |
|---|---|---|---|
| นอน | NP + นอน | person in sleeping/lying state | เด็กนอนแล้ว |
| กิน | NP + กิน + NP | consumer + consumed item | เด็กกินข้าว |
| ให้ | NP + ให้ + theme + recipient | giver + transferred item + recipient | แม่ให้เงินลูก |
| กลัว | NP + กลัว + NP/event | experiencer + stimulus | เด็กกลัวสุนัข |
| อยู่ | NP + อยู่ + place | located entity + location | กุญแจอยู่ในลิ้นชัก |
| มี | NP/place + มี + NP | possessor/location + possessed/existing entity | ห้องนี้มีหน้าต่าง |
เด็กหลับอยู่บนโซฟาค่ะ
dek lap yu bon sofa kha
The child is asleep on the sofa. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; one core state-holder plus location)
เด็กกินข้าวต้มไปครึ่งชามแล้วครับ
dek kin khao tom pai khrueng cham laeo khrap
The child has eaten half a bowl of rice porridge. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; consumer and consumed patient)
The number of overt noun phrases differs because หลับ and กิน describe different event structures. Thai has not deleted an English object from หลับ, nor does กิน require its food to be spoken whenever context supplies it.
Similar English meanings can select different Thai frames
Perception and cognition show why one-to-one vocabulary lists are insufficient. ฟัง presents intentional listening and can take the sound or speaker directly. ได้ยิน presents hearing or auditory reception. รู้ selects facts or a ว่า content clause, while รู้จัก selects an acquaintance, place, work, or system known through familiarity.
ฉันฟังเจ้าหน้าที่อธิบายขั้นตอนจนจบค่ะ
chan fang chao na thi athibai khanton chon chop kha
I listened to the official explain the procedure to the end. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; intentional perception and content event)
ผมได้ยินเสียงประกาศจากชั้นล่างครับ
phom dai yin siang prakat chak chan lang khrap
I heard an announcement from downstairs. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; involuntary auditory perception)
เรารู้ว่ารถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกกี่โมงค่ะ
rao ru wa rot thiao sutthai ok ki mong kha
We know what time the last service leaves. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; propositional content)
ผมรู้จักคนดูแลอาคารนี้ครับ
phom ru chak khon dulae akhan ni khrap
I know the caretaker of this building. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; personal acquaintance)
English uses know for the last two examples, but replacing รู้จัก with รู้ would change the relationship from acquaintance to information. The Thai frames make the semantic distinction overt.
Omission does not change the lexical frame
When a café worker asks รับอะไรดีคะ, a reply เอากาแฟครับ can omit the speaker and other shared material. When someone asks whether you have eaten, กินแล้วค่ะ omits both eater and food. These are discourse recoveries, not new intransitive dictionary senses created on the spot.
กินข้าวหรือยังคะ
kin khao rue yang kha
Have you eaten yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; addressee omitted as obvious)
กินแล้วครับ เพิ่งกินกับเพื่อน
kin laeo khrap phoeng kin kap phuean
Yes, I have; I just ate with friends. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; food omitted as generic/recoverable)
By contrast, some verbs have established uses with different lexical frames. เปิด can be transitive in พนักงานเปิดประตู “the employee opens the door” and intransitive/result-state-like in ประตูเปิดแล้ว “the door is open/has opened.” Such labile behavior is lexically constrained; it does not license every Thai verb to alternate. See labile verbs.
พนักงานเปิดประตูด้านข้างแล้วค่ะ
phanak ngan poet pratu dan khang laeo kha
An employee has opened the side door. (ordinary polite update, female speaker; transitive actor–patient frame)
ประตูด้านข้างเปิดแล้วครับ
pratu dan khang poet laeo khrap
The side door is open now. (ordinary polite update, male speaker; one-participant change/result frame)
Adding participants through constructions
Thai can extend a lexical frame with another predicate or relator. Benefactive ให้ adds the person for whom an action is done; causative ทำให้ introduces a result holder; instrumental ใช้ introduces a deliberately selected resource. These additions do not turn all nouns into equal “objects.”
ช่างซ่อมจักรยานให้เด็กข้างบ้านครับ
chang som chakkrayan hai dek khang ban khrap
The technician repaired a bicycle for the child next door. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; bicycle patient plus child beneficiary)
ฝนตกหนักทำให้ทางเข้าหมู่บ้านน้ำท่วมค่ะ
fon tok nak tham hai thang khao muban nam thuam kha
Heavy rain caused the entrance to the village to flood. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; cause plus result holder)
เจ้าหน้าที่ใช้เครื่องอ่านบัตรตรวจชื่อผู้เข้าร่วมครับ
chao na thi chai khrueang an bat truat chue phu khao ruam khrap
The official uses a card reader to check participants' names. (formal-neutral report, male speaker; instrument plus patient of checking)
In the first, จักรยาน is repaired and เด็กข้างบ้าน benefits. In the second, ฝนตกหนัก causes ทางเข้าหมู่บ้าน to enter a flooded state. In the third, the card reader is used and the names are checked. Linear proximity helps, but lexical meaning ultimately determines the roles.
Experiencers, possessors, and affected body parts
Thai frequently makes an experiencer or possessor the clause topic or subject where English uses have, a possessive determiner, or an impersonal frame.
ฉันปวดไหล่ข้างซ้ายมาสองวันแล้วค่ะ
chan puat lai khang sai ma song wan laeo kha
My left shoulder has hurt for two days. (ordinary polite health report, female speaker; experiencer plus affected body part)
ห้องประชุมมีทางออกสองทางครับ
hong prachum mi thang ok song thang khrap
The meeting room has two exits. (formal-neutral description, male speaker; container plus contained entities)
ฉันปวดไหล่ does not require Thai ไหล่ของฉัน because the experiencer–body-part relation is inherent and locally recoverable. ห้องประชุมมีทางออก uses มี because the room contains or provides exits. English possessive grammar should not be projected uniformly onto both.
Agent, time, and aspect remain separate choices
A participant frame says who relates to whom; it does not encode tense. เมื่อวาน anchors an event earlier, กำลัง...อยู่ presents it as ongoing, and จะ presents it prospectively. Passive or causative packaging changes viewpoint and roles, not verb shape.
เมื่อวานผู้จัดการให้ฉันโทรถามบริษัทขนส่งค่ะ
muea wan phu chatkan hai chan tho tham borisat khon song kha
Yesterday the manager had me call the shipping company to ask. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; causative causee plus speech addressee)
Here ผู้จัดการ initiates the causative, ฉัน performs โทรถาม, and บริษัทขนส่ง is the party asked. The unchanged predicates do not correspond to English past forms or infinitives.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers diagnose a failed delivery update.
ลูกค้าแจ้งเรื่องที่อยู่ผิดกับใครคะ
luk kha chaeng rueang thi yu phit kap khrai kha
Whom did the customer notify about the incorrect address? (polite question, female speaker; addressee queried after the reported issue)
ลูกค้าแจ้งผมครับ แล้วผมก็บอกฝ่ายจัดส่งให้แก้ที่อยู่
luk kha chaeng phom khrap laeo phom ko bok fai chat song hai kae thi yu
The customer notified me, and then I told Dispatch to correct the address. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; two distinct addressee frames)
แก้แล้วหรือยังคะ
kae laeo rue yang kha
Has it been corrected yet? (polite question, female speaker; address and responsible party omitted as recoverable)
แก้แล้วครับ ระบบเพิ่งส่งข้อความยืนยัน
kae laeo khrap rabop phoeng song khokhwam yuenyan
Yes. The system has just sent a confirmation message. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; result followed by a new transitive event)
Common Mistakes
1. Copying an English preposition into a direct Thai frame
❌ ฉันฟังถึงเจ้าหน้าที่อธิบายค่ะ
Incorrect—ฟัง directly selects the speaker or sound in this meaning; ถึง does not translate English ‘to.’
✅ ฉันฟังเจ้าหน้าที่อธิบายเงื่อนไขค่ะ
chan fang chao na thi athibai ngueankhai kha
I listened to the official explain the conditions. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Using รู้ for personal acquaintance
❌ ผมรู้ผู้จัดการโรงแรมนี้ครับ
Wrong for intended personal familiarity; factual รู้ does not replace acquaintance predicate รู้จัก.
✅ ผมรู้จักผู้จัดการโรงแรมนี้ครับ
phom ru chak phu chatkan rongraem ni khrap
I know the manager of this hotel. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
3. Omitting participants before context identifies them
❌ ผู้จัดการให้แล้วครับ
Incomplete as an answer to ‘What happened?’ because neither the transferred item nor recipient is recoverable.
✅ ผู้จัดการให้บัตรผ่านใบใหม่แก่พนักงานแล้วครับ
phu chatkan hai bat phan bai mai kae phanak ngan laeo khrap
The manager has given the employee a new access card. (formal-neutral report, male speaker; theme and recipient both explicit)
4. Separating a selected patient from its predicate with แล้ว
❌ พนักงานเปิดแล้วประตูด้านข้างค่ะ
Incorrect order; the patient ประตูด้านข้าง belongs directly after transitive เปิด, while แล้ว follows the completed event.
✅ พนักงานเปิดประตูทางออกด้านข้างแล้วค่ะ
phanak ngan poet pratu thang ok dan khang laeo kha
An employee has opened the side exit door. (ordinary polite update, female speaker; predicate and selected patient remain together)
5. Making a beneficiary the patient of the action
❌ ช่างซ่อมเด็กข้างบ้านจักรยานครับ
Incorrect role order; the bicycle is repaired, while the child is the beneficiary.
✅ ช่างซ่อมจักรยานคันเล็กให้เด็กข้างบ้านครับ
chang som chakkrayan khan lek hai dek khang ban khrap
The technician repaired a small bicycle for the child next door. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Each predicate selects a conventional set of semantic participants and complement shapes.
- Similar English translations can conceal different Thai frames; learn predicates with their arguments.
- Recoverable omission does not automatically change a verb's lexical valency.
- Labile alternations are lexically restricted rather than a universal active–intransitive rule.
- Benefactive, causative, instrumental, passive, time, and aspect constructions reorganize viewpoint without inflecting the verb.
