Thai can place a referential topic—typically an identifiable one—outside the main clause and then refer to it again inside the comment: คุณอรน่ะ เขาดูแลงบประมาณค่ะ “As for Khun On, she handles the budget.” คุณอร establishes the external topic; เขา resumes that person as the subject of the following clause.
This pattern is called left dislocation with resumptive reference. It is especially common in conversation, where a pause, น่ะ, or colloquial เนี่ย separates the topic from the comment. Thai also permits a topic linked to a silent gap, so the resumptive form is a meaningful discourse choice—not a pronoun that grammar requires after every topic.
A specific indefinite can also be introduced deliberately as a story topic, much like English “there's this customer....” That scene-setting use is marked; an already accessible referent remains the safest B1 production model.
External topic plus an overt link
| Topic's role in the comment | Productive shape | Model |
|---|---|---|
khun on na khao chai yen lae athibai keng kha
As for Khun On, she is patient and explains things well. (ordinary-polite spoken left dislocation with resumed subject, female speaker)
คุณสมชายน่ะ ผมเจอเขาที่สถานีเมื่อวานครับ
khun somchai na phom choe khao thi sathani muea wan khrap
As for Khun Somchai, I met him at the station yesterday. (ordinary-polite spoken left dislocation with resumed object, male speaker)
พี่สาวฉันน่ะ รถของเขาจอดอยู่หน้าร้านค่ะ
phi sao chan na rot khong khao chot yu na ran kha
As for my older sister, her car is parked in front of the shop. (ordinary-polite spoken left dislocation with possessive resumption, female speaker)
The first phrase does not occupy an ordinary argument slot inside the clause. The resumptive เขา or ของเขา makes the connection explicit. Thai เขา does not encode male versus female gender, so context identifies its referent.
Compare resumption with a silent gap
Thai readily maintains an active topic through zero reference. An object topic therefore normally needs no overt equivalent of English it.
คุณสมชายน่ะ ผมโทรหาเมื่อเช้าครับ
khun somchai na phom tho ha muea chao khrap
As for Khun Somchai, I called him this morning. (ordinary-polite object topic with a silent object, male speaker)
คุณสมชายน่ะ ผมโทรหาเขาเมื่อเช้าครับ
khun somchai na phom tho ha khao muea chao khrap
As for Khun Somchai, I called him this morning. (ordinary-polite left dislocation with overt resumptive object, male speaker; stronger maintenance of his reference)
Both are possible. The gap version is economical and neutral when the relation is obvious. The overt เขา can help maintain a human referent across a longer or potentially ambiguous comment, or it can add contrastive attention to that person. It is not automatically “more grammatical.”
For an inanimate object, mechanical resumption with มัน often sounds heavy. เอกสารชุดนี้ ผมตรวจแล้ว is the ordinary topic-with-gap model. เอกสารชุดนี้น่ะ ผมตรวจมันแล้ว may be heard in emphatic (informal) speech, but มัน adds attitude or contrast rather than serving as a neutral translation of English it.
Resumed subjects are highly natural in speech
When the external topic names a person, เขา can restart the comment with a clear subject. This is common when the speaker first selects a person from a larger set and then adds several predicates.
ผู้สมัครคนที่ใส่เสื้อสีเทาน่ะ เขาเคยทำงานต่างประเทศครับ
phu samak khon thi sai suea si thao na khao khoei tham ngan tang prathet khrap
As for the applicant in the gray shirt, he has worked abroad before. (ordinary-polite spoken left dislocation, male speaker)
น้องสาวผมน่ะ เขาเป็นสถาปนิกและอยู่เชียงใหม่ครับ
nong sao phom na khao pen sathapanik lae yu chiang mai khrap
As for my younger sister, she is an architect and lives in Chiang Mai. (ordinary-polite spoken left dislocation, male speaker)
The second comment contains a classifying predicate with เป็น and a location predicate with อยู่. Resumption changes neither predicate. It simply re-establishes the sister as the subject shared by both.
Repeating the topic noun itself is another possibility when a pronoun would be socially unclear, especially in careful or (formal) contexts: สำหรับคุณอร คุณอรจะเป็นผู้ประสานงานหลัก. That repetition is explicit but can sound bureaucratic in conversation. Thai normally chooses among a name, kin term, title, pronoun, and zero reference according to relationship and information flow.
Inanimate and domain topics
มัน can resume an animal or inanimate topic in everyday speech. With a human referent it can be insulting, dismissive, or aggressively familiar, so it is not a general third-person pronoun.
รถมือสองคันนี้น่ะ มันขับง่ายแต่กินน้ำมันมากครับ
rot mue song khan ni na man khap ngai tae kin namman mak khrap
As for this used car, it is easy to drive but uses a lot of fuel. (ordinary-polite conversational left dislocation with inanimate subject resumption, male speaker)
ตึกฝั่งเหนือน่ะ มันมีร้านอาหารอยู่ชั้นล่างค่ะ
tuek fang nuea na man mi ran ahan yu chan lang kha
As for the north building, it has a restaurant downstairs. (ordinary-polite conversational domain topic with resumption, female speaker)
In the second example, ตึกฝั่งเหนือ establishes the domain and มัน keeps that domain overt before the มี clause. A simpler ตึกฝั่งเหนือมีร้านอาหารอยู่ชั้นล่าง is also natural and less marked. Left dislocation is chosen because the speaker first isolates the building and then comments on it.
With animals, มัน is neutral in many familiar contexts:
แมวตัวขาวน่ะ มันชอบไปนอนบนตู้ค่ะ
maeo tua khao na man chop pai non bon tu kha
As for the white cat, it likes to sleep on top of the cabinet. (ordinary-polite conversational left dislocation, female speaker)
The classifier phrase stays intact before the topic boundary. Left dislocation moves or establishes the whole referential phrase, not isolated ตัวขาว.
Topic markers and prosody
A pause alone can separate the external topic. น่ะ (informal/neutral spoken) explicitly marks “as for this referent” and often sounds explanatory or mildly contrastive. เนี่ย (informal) is more attention-directing and may add insistence, surprise, or a reminder that this is the relevant item.
เรื่องวันส่งของเนี่ย เราต้องคุยกับลูกค้าอีกครั้งค่ะ
rueang wan song khong nia rao tong khui kap lukkha ik khrang kha
As for the delivery date, we need to speak with the customer again. (informal topic marking within an otherwise polite statement, female speaker)
This sentence has no resumptive pronoun because the issue is a frame, not an ordinary participant of คุย. Topic marking and resumption are separate choices. A page on left dislocation must therefore not reduce the construction to “add น่ะ and repeat a pronoun.”
In (formal) prose, a heading, สำหรับ, or a full lexical noun phrase often establishes reference more cleanly than conversational น่ะ/เนี่ย. In ordinary speech, intonation does much of the structural work; the written phrase space in these examples represents a boundary, not obligatory punctuation.
Ambiguity and long comments
Resumption is useful when more than one third person is available or intervening material might obscure the topic's role. But a bare เขา is not enough if two people are equally plausible; repeat a name or role.
คุณนิดกับคุณอรน่ะ หัวหน้าบอกว่าคุณอรจะโทรกลับเองค่ะ
khun nit kap khun on na huana bok wa khun on cha tho klap eng kha
As for Khun Nit and Khun On, the manager said that Khun On would call back herself. (ordinary-polite clarification with repeated name, female speaker)
Using เขา in place of the second คุณอร would leave the identity uncertain. Thai permits extensive omission and pronominal reference only where hearers can recover the intended participant.
The zero-pronoun guide explains how relationship, salience, and topic continuity govern the choice between an overt form and silence.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues discuss responsibility for an event.
คุณมาลีน่ะ เขาดูแลเรื่องสถานที่ใช่ไหมคะ
khun mali na khao dulae rueang sathanthi chai mai kha
As for Khun Mali, she is handling the venue, right? (ordinary-polite left-dislocation question, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ ส่วนคุณเอกเขาดูแลรายชื่อแขก
chai khrap suan khun ek khao dulae raichue khaek
Yes. As for Khun Ek, he is handling the guest list. (ordinary-polite contrastive topic with resumed subject, male speaker)
แล้วคุณเอก เราต้องส่งรายชื่อให้เขาวันนี้ไหมคะ
laeo khun ek rao tong song raichue hai khao wan ni mai kha
And Khun Ek—do we need to send him the list today? (ordinary-polite external topic with resumptive recipient, female speaker)
ส่งพรุ่งนี้ก็ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมบอกเขาเอง
song phrung ni ko dai khrap diao phom bok khao eng
Tomorrow is fine. I will tell him myself. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; known list omitted and person maintained)
The dialogue uses subject and recipient resumption where it helps track two people, while omitting the known list when repetition would add nothing.
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting มัน after every inanimate object topic
❌ ใบเสร็จใบนี้ผมหามันเจอแล้วครับ
Marked for an ordinary update—มัน is not a required equivalent of English ‘it.’
✅ ใบเสร็จค่าอาหารใบนี้ผมหาเจอแล้วครับ
bai set kha ahan bai ni phom ha choe laeo khrap
This restaurant receipt, I have found. (ordinary-polite object topic with a gap, male speaker)
2. Using มัน neutrally for a respected person
❌ อาจารย์ท่านนั้นน่ะ มันสอนผมเมื่อปีที่แล้วครับ
Disrespectful—มัน is inappropriate as a neutral resumptive for the professor.
✅ อาจารย์ท่านนั้นน่ะ ท่านสอนผมเมื่อปีที่แล้วครับ
achan than nan na than son phom muea pi thi laeo khrap
As for that professor, they taught me last year. (respectful spoken left dislocation, male speaker)
3. Leaving an ambiguous resumptive pronoun
❌ คุณนิดคุยกับคุณอรแล้วเขาจะส่งไฟล์ค่ะ
Ambiguous—เขา could refer to either Khun Nit or Khun On.
✅ คุณนิดคุยกับคุณอรแล้ว คุณอรจะเป็นคนส่งไฟล์ค่ะ
khun nit khui kap khun on laeo khun on cha pen khon song fai kha
Khun Nit has spoken with Khun On, and Khun On will be the one to send the file. (ordinary-polite explicit topic continuation, female speaker)
4. Using left dislocation as the neutral introduction pattern
❌ ลูกค้าคนหนึ่งน่ะ เขาโทรมาเมื่อกี้ครับ
Marked rather than impossible—this presents a particular customer as a story topic, so it is not the neutral default for introducing a caller.
✅ เมื่อกี้มีลูกค้าคนหนึ่งโทรมาถามเรื่องสินค้าใหม่ครับ
muea ki mi lukkha khon nueng tho ma tham rueang sinkha mai khrap
A customer just called to ask about the new product. (ordinary-polite existential introduction, male speaker)
5. Treating topic น่ะ as required in formal writing
❌ ผู้สมัครคนนี้น่ะ เขามีคุณสมบัติครบถ้วน
Too conversational for the intended formal evaluation because น่ะ frames the candidate as a spoken topic.
✅ ผู้สมัครรายนี้มีคุณสมบัติครบถ้วนตามประกาศค่ะ
phu samak rai ni mi khunnasombat khrop thuan tam prakat kha
This applicant meets all the qualifications in the announcement. (formal-polite evaluation, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Left dislocation establishes an external topic and resumes it overtly inside the comment when clarity, contrast, or stance motivates that link. Subject เขา, object เขา, possessive ของเขา, and inanimate or animal มัน have different social and referential constraints. Thai also allows silent topic links, so resumption is a discourse choice rather than an English-style obligation to repeat he, she, or it.
