Standard written Thai distinguishes female statement particle ค่ะ from female question or attention particle คะ. Both are represented as kha in RTGS, so romanization hides the contrast learners most need to see. The spelling follows the social action of the turn: ค่ะ closes an assertion, answer, or acknowledgment; คะ closes a genuine question or calls for someone's attention. In นะคะ, the spelling is always คะ because the stack turns the preceding message toward the listener as an appeal, reminder, or reassurance.
These particles conventionally present a female speaker's polite identity. They do not agree with the grammatical subject and do not copy the listener's gender. Some speakers make different identity choices in real life; those choices belong to self-presentation and community practice, not noun agreement.
For the form-level foundations, compare the dedicated pages on statement ค่ะ and question or attention คะ. This page concentrates on how speakers choose between them across whole turns.
Statement ค่ะ closes information or acknowledgment
Use ค่ะ after a complete statement, answer, confirmation, acceptance, or courteous acknowledgment. It often has falling, complete intonation.
เอกสารอยู่บนโต๊ะหน้าห้องค่ะ
ekkasan yu bon to na hong kha
The documents are on the table outside the room. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
พรุ่งนี้สะดวกค่ะ เข้ามาได้ตอนบ่าย
phrung ni saduak kha khao ma dai ton bai
Tomorrow works for me; you can come in the afternoon. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)
รับทราบค่ะ เดี๋ยวจะแจ้งทีมให้
rap sap kha diao cha chaeng thim hai
Understood. I'll let the team know. (polite workplace acknowledgment, female speaker)
In the last example, ค่ะ completes the acknowledgment รับทราบ. The next clause continues with an omitted subject because the same speaker remains responsible for notifying the team. Repeating ดิฉัน would be grammatical but unnecessarily heavy in an ordinary exchange.
Statement ค่ะ may answer a yes/no question, but it does not itself encode “yes” in every context. After a request, a standalone ค่ะ can display acknowledgment or acceptance. When someone calls the speaker, responsive คะ? with attentive intonation can mean “Yes?” The prior turn determines what is being acknowledged or attended to.
Question and attention คะ asks for uptake
Use คะ after an information question or a yes/no question. It also follows a title, name, or kin term used to get someone's attention.
รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกกี่โมงคะ
rot thiao sutthai ok ki mong kha
What time does the last bus leave? (ordinary polite information question, female speaker)
ส่งใบสมัครทางอีเมลได้ไหมคะ
song bai samak thang imen dai mai kha
Can I send the application by email? (ordinary polite permission question, female speaker)
คุณเภสัชกรคะ ยานี้ต้องกินหลังอาหารหรือเปล่าคะ
khun phesatchakon kha ya ni tong kin lang ahan rue plao kha
Excuse me, pharmacist, does this medicine have to be taken after food? (polite attention call followed by a question, female speaker)
The first คะ after คุณเภสัชกร is not a question about the pharmacist. It asks for attention and creates a boundary before the medical question. The second follows หรือเปล่า, the question frame.
Question words do not determine the particle by themselves. A clause containing อะไร can be an assertion, as in “I don't know what happened,” while a short attention call can take คะ without a question word. The relevant unit is the action performed by the whole turn.
The same proposition in three stances
Compare three ways to report that a revised quotation has been sent.
ส่งใบเสนอราคาฉบับแก้ไขแล้ว
song bai sanoe rakha chabap kaekhai laeo
I've sent the revised quotation. (informal update to a close colleague)
ส่งใบเสนอราคาฉบับแก้ไขแล้วค่ะ
song bai sanoe rakha chabap kaekhai laeo kha
I've sent the revised quotation. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
ส่งใบเสนอราคาฉบับแก้ไขแล้วนะคะ
song bai sanoe rakha chabap kaekhai laeo na kha
I've sent the revised quotation now, just so you know. (warm polite reassurance or reminder, female speaker)
The first is natural where closeness makes a status-politeness marker unnecessary. The second supplies neutral polite closure. The third does more than become “extra polite”: นะ asks the listener to register the update as relevant shared information, while คะ completes the conventional female polite stack. In an argument, the same นะคะ could sound like an insistent reminder; context and intonation decide the stance.
Omission is therefore interpretable rather than empty. It can index intimacy, speed, or a deliberately unceremonious tone. In a first meeting or service encounter, it can instead feel abrupt. One missing particle never proves anger by itself.
Particle stacks: why นะคะ is not นะค่ะ
Thai stacks stance and question material before the final status-politeness element. The spelling reflects the resulting listener-oriented action.
| Form | Interactional structure | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| ค่ะ | statement, answer, or acknowledgment + female politeness | (ordinary polite) |
| ไหมคะ | yes/no question + female politeness | (ordinary polite) |
| หรือยังคะ | “or not yet?” question + female politeness | (ordinary polite) |
| นะคะ | alignment, appeal, reminder, or reassurance + female politeness | (ordinary polite) |
| สิคะ | urging or invited action + female politeness | (ordinary polite, potentially insistent) |
ตรวจชื่อกับเลขบัญชีอีกครั้งนะคะ
truat chue kap lek banchi ik khrang na kha
Please check the name and account number once more. (softened polite reminder, female speaker)
ยังไม่ได้รับข้อความหรือคะ
yang mai dai rap khokhwam rue kha
Oh, you still haven't received the message? (polite checking question, female speaker)
นะคะ can follow a proposition that English punctuates as a statement. It remains listener-oriented: the speaker may be reassuring, reminding, asking for cooperation, or gently insisting. Writing นะค่ะ wrongly selects statement spelling inside a conventional stack.
Turn position and rhythm
A particle normally occurs at a boundary where the listener could respond. A female speaker need not add ค่ะ after every predicate in a continuous explanation.
ตรวจรายการเรียบร้อยแล้วค่ะ เหลือแค่รอลายเซ็นผู้จัดการ
truat raikan riaproi laeo kha luea khae ro lai sen phuchatkan
I've checked the list; all that's left is to wait for the manager's signature. (ordinary polite workplace update, female speaker)
The first clause completes the main report, so ค่ะ is natural there. The second supplies closely attached detail and can remain without another particle. If the speaker finished the whole turn with ค่ะ, that would also be possible; the difference is rhythmic packaging, not truth conditions.
Titles and names can create their own boundary when used to attract attention:
พี่แอนคะ ว่างคุยสักห้านาทีไหมคะ
phi aen kha wang khui sak ha nathi mai kha
P'Ann, do you have five minutes to talk? (polite attention call and request, female speaker)
The title พี่ encodes a relational choice; the omitted “I” and “you” are recoverable. Thai politeness comes from address, request shape, particles, timing, and tone together—not from mechanically translating English pronouns.
What intonation changes
The lexical spelling constrains the basic contrast, but intonation refines it. Falling ค่ะ usually closes information or calmly acknowledges. A quick, light ค่ะ can signal efficient uptake. Lengthened ค่ะ may sound warm, reluctant, or placating depending on facial expression and context. Rising standalone คะ? commonly requests repetition or displays surprise.
คะ? รบกวนพูดอีกครั้งได้ไหมคะ
kha ropkuan phut ik khrang dai mai kha
Sorry? Could you say that again? (polite repair request, female speaker; rising first คะ)
RTGS writes both particles as kha and does not record this conversational contour. Learners must therefore connect the Thai spelling, the clause type, and the sound rather than relying on romanization.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A woman phones a repair shop; a man answers.
สวัสดีค่ะ เมื่อเช้าทางร้านโทรมาใช่ไหมคะ
sawatdi kha muea chao thang ran tho ma chai mai kha
Hello. Your shop called this morning, right? (polite female greeting and confirmation question)
ใช่ครับ เครื่องซ่อมเสร็จแล้วครับ
chai khrap khrueang som set laeo khrap
Yes. The device has been repaired. (ordinary polite male reply)
รับทราบค่ะ ไปรับหลังหกโมงได้ไหมคะ
rap sap kha pai rap lang hok mong dai mai kha
Understood. May I collect it after six? (polite female acknowledgment followed by a question)
ได้ครับ แต่มาถึงก่อนหนึ่งทุ่มนะครับ
dai khrap tae ma thueng kon nueng thum na khrap
Yes, but please arrive before seven. (ordinary polite male response and reminder)
Her ค่ะ closes an acknowledgment, while ไหมคะ hands over a question. The dialogue would sound less natural if every line repeated ดิฉัน and คุณ: turn order already identifies requester and shop worker.
Common Mistakes
1. Using คะ after a statement
❌ ส่งรายงานแล้วคะ
Incorrect standard spelling for a completed polite statement.
✅ ส่งรายงานฉบับสุดท้ายแล้วค่ะ
song raingan chabap sutthai laeo kha
I've sent the final report. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
2. Using ค่ะ after a question
❌ ประชุมเริ่มกี่โมงค่ะ
Incorrect standard spelling after a genuine information question.
✅ การประชุมเริ่มกี่โมงคะ
kan prachum roem ki mong kha
What time does the meeting start? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
3. Writing นะค่ะ
❌ ส่งที่อยู่อีกครั้งนะค่ะ
Incorrect standard stack—นะ takes listener-oriented คะ in this sequence.
✅ ส่งที่อยู่อีกครั้งนะคะ
song thiyu ik khrang na kha
Please send the address again. (softened polite reminder, female speaker)
4. Matching the particle to a male listener
❌ ผู้หญิงพูดกับผู้ชายว่า ขอบคุณครับ
Incorrect under the intended conventional female presentation—the listener's gender does not select the particle.
✅ ผู้หญิงพูดกับผู้ชายว่า ขอบคุณค่ะ
phuying phut kap phuchai wa khopkhun kha
A woman says to a man, ‘Thank you.’ (conventional female polite presentation)
5. Repeating the speaker pronoun and particle in every clause
❌ ดิฉันได้รับแล้วค่ะ ดิฉันจะตรวจค่ะ ดิฉันจะตอบค่ะ
Overexplicit and mechanically segmented when one speaker's actions remain continuous.
✅ ได้รับแล้วค่ะ ตรวจเสร็จแล้วจะตอบกลับ
dai rap laeo kha truat set laeo cha top klap
I've received it. I'll reply when I've finished checking. (ordinary polite female turn)
Key Takeaways
- ค่ะ closes statements, answers, and acknowledgments; คะ closes questions and attention calls.
- The listener-oriented stack is always นะคะ, even when English punctuation looks declarative.
- Particles mark turn actions and boundaries; they do not agree with a noun or replace a pronoun.
- Omission, repetition, and intonation help construct familiarity, distance, reassurance, or insistence.
