Relativizing Locations, Instruments, and Possessors

Subject and object relatives leave a relatively easy-to-find participant gap. Oblique relatives are harder: the head is understood as a location, instrument, companion, source, or possessor inside the modifying clause. Thai still puts the head first, but it does not supply separate relative words equivalent to English where, with whom, from which, and whose.

Instead, Thai uses several strategies. A lexical predicate can make the relation obvious, associative ด้วย can remain at the end of the relative clause, and a possessive relation can be recovered through whole–part knowledge or an overt resumptive pronoun. Source relations with จาก often rely on inference or a fuller recast instead of leaving bare จาก without its complement. There is no single template for all obliques; the natural strategy depends on the relation and processing load.

This page extends the basic relative-clause pattern beyond subjects and direct objects. Review postnominal modifier order if the placement of the whole modifying clause is unfamiliar.

Location: let the predicate supply the missing place

With predicates whose setting is easily understood, the head can supply a location without an overt word meaning where.

ร้านที่เราเจอกันครั้งแรกปิดไปแล้วค่ะ

ran thi rao choe kan khrang raek pit pai laeo kha

The restaurant where we first met has closed. (ordinary-polite update, female speaker; restaurant is the understood meeting place)

โต๊ะตัวที่ผมวางแฟ้มไว้โยกนิดหน่อยครับ

to tua thi phom wang faem wai yok nit noi khrap

The table where I left the folder wobbles a little. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; table is the understood location of วาง...ไว้)

The corresponding full clauses would be เราเจอกันที่ร้านนั้น “we met at that restaurant” and ผมวางแฟ้มไว้บนโต๊ะตัวนั้น “I left the folder on that table.” Inside the relatives, the place phrase is not pronounced because the head and the predicate make it recoverable. Thai does not replace it with ที่ไหน; that form asks “where?”

RelationIndependent frameRelative frameStrategy
meeting placeเจอกันที่ร้านนั้นร้านที่เราเจอกันlocation inferred
placement surfaceวางแฟ้มไว้บนโต๊ะโต๊ะที่วางแฟ้มไว้location inferred from วาง...ไว้
instrumentใช้มีดหั่นผักมีดที่ใช้หั่นผักhead is object of ใช้
companionไปกับเพื่อนเพื่อนที่ไปด้วยด้วย retains association
sourceสั่งของจากร้านร้านที่สั่งของเป็นประจำsource inferred from the commercial frame
possessorลูกของผู้หญิงคนนั้นผู้หญิงที่ลูกของเธอ...resumptive possessive pronoun
💡
Reconstruct the independent clause before shortening it. If the head would occur after ที่, บน, จาก, กับ, or ของ, decide whether Thai can infer that relation or needs a relational word or resumptive pronoun to preserve it.

Instruments: use ใช้ and leave its object recoverable

An instrument is often relativized as the understood object of ใช้ “use,” followed by the action it enables.

มีดเล่มที่แม่ใช้หั่นผักต้องลับใหม่ค่ะ

mit lem thi mae chai han phak tong lap mai kha

The knife Mum uses to chop vegetables needs sharpening. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; knife is the instrument and object of ใช้)

โปรแกรมที่ทีมใช้จัดตารางทำงานอัปเดตเมื่อคืนครับ

prokraem thi thim chai chat tarang thamngan apdet muea khuen khrap

The program the team uses to schedule work was updated last night. (ordinary-polite workplace report, male speaker; program is instrument of จัด)

In แม่ใช้มีดหั่นผัก, มีด follows ใช้. Relativization moves no Thai word from inside the clause; the external head มีด is linked to the recoverable object position after ใช้. English inserts with which or changes the syntax to uses to chop. Thai keeps the same invariant predicates.

The classifier belongs to the head noun phrase, not the relative relation. มีดเล่มที่... individuates one knife; มีดที่... is also possible when context identifies it. Do not choose a classifier by translating English the one.

Companion tails and source recovery

Some oblique relations are clearest when a word remains at the end of the relative clause. Associative ด้วย can preserve a companion relation. Source จาก, by contrast, normally precedes a complement in an ordinary source phrase, so do not assume that it can always be left bare just because English can strand from.

เพื่อนที่ผมไปสัมมนาด้วยจะมารับตอนเย็นครับ

phuean thi phom pai sammana duai cha ma rap ton yen khrap

The friend I attended the seminar with will pick me up this evening. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; ด้วย marks the companion relation)

ร้านที่ฉันสั่งเมล็ดกาแฟเป็นประจำส่งของเร็วมากค่ะ

ran thi chan sang malet kafae pen pracham song khong reo mak kha

The shop I regularly order coffee beans from ships very quickly. (ordinary-polite assessment, female speaker; the source is inferred from ร้าน and the ordering frame)

The companion pattern is sometimes described as a stranded relational marker because the head remains outside the relative clause while ด้วย stays where the association is interpreted. Do not force English preposition-fronting: Thai does not build an everyday equivalent of the friend with whom... by placing กับ before ที่.

The companion tail is not always obligatory when participation is already obvious. For sources, a head such as ร้าน plus a purchasing or ordering predicate can make the source recoverable, as in the example above. If the relation is not immediately clear, retain a full จาก + source phrase in a paraphrase or split the thought into two clauses rather than manufacturing a bare final จาก.

💡
For active use, ด้วย is a useful companion tail. With a source, first try a natural predicate frame that makes the source inferable; if that fails, recast the sentence with a complete จาก + source phrase.

Possessors: association or resumption

Thai has no inflected relative form meaning whose. Whole–part relations can be left to association when they are uniquely recoverable.

บ้านหลังที่หลังคารั่วอยู่ท้ายซอยค่ะ

ban lang thi langkha rua yu thai soi kha

The house whose roof leaks is at the end of the lane. (ordinary-polite directions, female speaker; house–roof relation inferred)

รถคันที่เครื่องยนต์มีเสียงดังจอดอยู่ด้านหน้าครับ

rot khan thi khrueangyon mi siang dang chot yu dan na khrap

The car whose engine is making a loud noise is parked out front. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; car–engine relation inferred)

When the possessor is human or competing antecedents make association uncertain, an ordinary possessive pronoun can resume the head:

ผู้หญิงคนที่ลูกของเธอเรียนห้องเดียวกับน้องฉันเป็นหมอค่ะ

phu ying khon thi luk khong thoe rian hong diao kap nong chan pen mo kha

The woman whose child is in the same class as my younger sibling is a doctor. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; เธอ resumes the female head as possessor)

Here เธอ occupies the ordinary possessor position after ของ and points back to ผู้หญิง. This is a resumptive strategy, not agreement: Thai chooses เขา, เธอ, a name, a kin term, or zero reference according to social reference and clarity. In formal prose (formal), repeating a descriptive noun phrase or recasting into two clauses may be clearer than an ambiguous pronoun.

Marker presence and compact modifier patterns

Overt ที่ is safest before a full oblique clause. Very compact, lexicalized descriptions can omit it, but the result may be a compound or property-like modifier rather than a freely shortened relative.

เราขอห้องติดสวนแต่ได้ห้องที่มองเห็นถนนค่ะ

rao kho hong tit suan tae dai hong thi mong hen thanon kha

We requested a garden-facing room but got a room overlooking the road. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; compact markerless modifier versus fuller ที่ clause)

ห้องติดสวน is a conventional compact description. It does not license removing ที่ from every location relative. Time expressions, negation, overt subjects, and several predicates all favor a visible relative boundary.

Scope and the main-clause boundary

Oblique relatives can be long, so locate the main predicate after the full head phrase.

เก้าอี้ตัวที่คุณยายนั่งอ่านหนังสืออยู่เมื่อเช้าต้องเอาไปซ่อมครับ

kao i tua thi khun yai nang an nangsue yu muea chao tong ao pai som khrap

The chair Grandma was sitting in while reading this morning needs to be taken for repair. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; chair is the setting of the posture event)

The relative ends after เมื่อเช้า; ต้องเอาไปซ่อม is the main predicate. อยู่ gives the reading event an ongoing viewpoint inside the modifier. It does not scope over the repair obligation, and no verb conjugates to match English past tense.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two coworkers identify equipment and its owner:

เครื่องที่คุณใช้สแกนเอกสารอยู่ตรงไหนคะ

khrueang thi khun chai sakaen ekkasan yu trong nai kha

Where is the machine you use to scan documents? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; machine is the instrument)

อยู่บนโต๊ะที่ผมวางกล่องไว้ครับ

yu bon to thi phom wang klong wai khrap

It's on the table where I left the box. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; table is a placement location)

เป็นเครื่องที่สายไฟของมันหลวมหรือเปล่าคะ

pen khrueang thi sai fai khong man luam rue plao kha

Is it the machine whose power cable is loose? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; มัน resumes the inanimate possessor)

ใช่ครับ เดี๋ยวผมเรียกช่างที่เคยซ่อมเครื่องนี้มาดู

chai khrap diao phom riak chang thi khoei som khrueang ni ma du

Yes. I'll call the technician who repaired this machine before to take a look. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Using ไหน as an English-style relative “where”

❌ ร้านไหนเราเจอกันครั้งแรกปิดแล้วค่ะ

Incorrect for the intended statement—ร้านไหน asks ‘which shop?’ rather than introducing a location relative.

✅ ร้านที่เราเจอกันตอนเรียนมหาวิทยาลัยปิดแล้วค่ะ

ran thi rao choe kan ton rian mahawitthayalai pit laeo kha

The restaurant where we met during university has closed. (ordinary-polite update, female speaker)

2. Fronting กับ before the relative marker

❌ เพื่อนกับที่ผมไปประชุมจะมาสายครับ

Incorrect—the everyday companion relation is not formed by placing กับ before ที่.

✅ เพื่อนที่ผมไปประชุมด้วยจะมาสายครับ

phuean thi phom pai prachum duai cha ma sai khrap

The friend I went to the meeting with will be late. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; companion marked by ด้วย)

3. Deleting the possessor after ของ

❌ ผู้สมัครที่ประสบการณ์ของตรงกับงานผ่านรอบแรกค่ะ

Incorrect—ของ cannot stand without a recoverable possessor in this explicit possessive frame.

✅ ผู้สมัครที่ประสบการณ์ของเขาตรงกับงานผ่านรอบแรกค่ะ

phu samak thi prasopkan khong khao trong kap ngan phan rop raek kha

The applicant whose experience matches the job passed the first round. (formal-polite report, female voice; เขา resumes the possessor)

💡
Oblique relatives are genuinely less transparent than subject and object relatives. If the relation cannot be recovered immediately, retain a relational tail, use a resumptive possessor, or split the thought into two sentences.

Key Takeaways

Thai keeps an oblique relative after its head but chooses its internal strategy by relation. Locations may be inferred from a lexical frame; instruments commonly appear as the gap after ใช้; companions can retain ด้วย; sources are often inferred or recast; and possessors rely on whole–part association or an overt resumptive pronoun. English where/with whom/from which/whose do not map to one Thai relative word.
