uppnå is the verb for achieving or attaining something — a goal, a result, a certain age. It is built from the prefix upp- ("up") plus the verb nå ("to reach"), and the practical payoff is that it inherits nå's conjugation exactly: uppnå – uppnådde – uppnått. Where plain nå is about reaching a place or a person, uppnå is abstract and a notch more formal: you uppnå targets, outcomes, and milestones, not physical destinations.
Principal parts
| Infinitive | Present | Preteritum (past) | Supine | Imperative | Group |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| uppnå | uppnår | uppnådde | uppnått | uppnå | Group 3 (short, upp- + nå) |
Because uppnå is just nå with a prefix, the forms are identical to nå – når – nådde – nått with upp- glued on the front. The doubled dd in the past uppnådde and the short supine uppnått are the Group 3 hallmark — a short vowel-final stem that takes -dde in the past and -tt in the supine. This is the great convenience of prefixed verbs in Swedish: you never learn their forms separately. Spot the base verb (nå) inside the compound and the entire paradigm is already known to you — the prefix simply rides along unchanged through every tense.
Vi uppnår sällan allt vi planerar, men vi kom nära.
We rarely achieve everything we plan, but we came close. uppnår — present.
Företaget uppnådde sina mål redan i juni.
The company reached its targets already in June. uppnådde — past.
Forskarna har uppnått ett genombrott.
The researchers have achieved a breakthrough. har uppnått — perfect.
Use 1: achieving goals and results
The core use is uppnå ett mål (achieve a goal) and uppnå (goda/önskade) resultat (attain good/desired results). This is the language of business plans, reports, sports, and personal ambition. Note that uppnå takes a direct object — the thing achieved — with no preposition.
Hur ska vi uppnå det här målet till årsskiftet?
How are we going to reach this goal by the end of the year?
Laget uppnådde sitt bästa resultat någonsin.
The team achieved its best result ever.
Man uppnår inte sådana siffror utan hårt arbete.
You don't attain figures like that without hard work.
Use 2: attaining an age or a level
A very Swedish use is uppnå for reaching an age or a formal level/limit: uppnå pensionsåldern (reach retirement age), uppnå myndig ålder (come of age), uppnå en viss nivå (attain a certain level). English would just say "reach" or "turn," but in formal Swedish uppnå is the natural choice here.
När man uppnår pensionsåldern ändras reglerna.
When you reach retirement age, the rules change.
Hon hade uppnått en imponerande nivå i pianospel.
She had attained an impressive level in piano playing. hade uppnått — pluperfect.
Eleverna måste uppnå godkänt för att gå vidare.
The pupils have to reach a pass grade to move on.
Use 3: register — uppnå vs nå
uppnå and nå overlap, but register and abstraction separate them. Use nå for physical reaching (nå hyllan, reach the shelf) and for reaching a person; use uppnå for abstract attainment in more formal contexts. Crucially, upp- here is inseparable — it never detaches the way a stressed particle does. You say uppnå målet, never nå upp målet (that's a different, more literal phrase).
Vi nådde toppen vid lunch och uppnådde därmed dagens mål.
We reached the summit at lunch and thereby achieved the day's goal. nå (physical) vs uppnå (abstract).
Syftet med reformen är att uppnå större jämlikhet.
The aim of the reform is to achieve greater equality. formal register.
Common Mistakes
❌ Vi uppnådade våra mål.
Incorrect — uppnå is nå + a prefix and is Group 3, so the past is uppnådde, never -ade.
✅ Vi uppnådde våra mål.
We achieved our goals.
❌ Vi har uppnådde resultatet.
Incorrect — after har you need the supine uppnått, not the past uppnådde.
✅ Vi har uppnått resultatet.
We've achieved the result.
❌ Vi uppnådde till målet.
Incorrect — uppnå is transitive and takes a direct object with no preposition. The 'reach up to' sense with till belongs to nå upp till.
✅ Vi uppnådde målet.
We reached the goal.
❌ Jag uppnår dig imorgon på telefon.
Wrong verb — reaching a person by phone is nå, not uppnå. uppnå is for abstract goals.
✅ Jag når dig imorgon på telefon.
I'll reach you tomorrow by phone.

- nå (to reach)B1 — nå means 'to reach' and is a model Group 3 short verb: nå – nådde – nått. It covers reaching a place, a person (by phone), or a goal, plus particle uses like nå fram ('get through'). Its prefixed cousin uppnå means 'achieve'.
- Prefixed (Inseparable) Verbs (förstå, bestämma)B2 — Swedish has two opposite verb-building systems: native particles that are STRESSED and split off (stå ut), and borrowed prefixes be-, för-, an-, und-, er- that are UNSTRESSED, glued on, and never separate (förstå, bestämma). Stress placement alone tells you which system a verb belongs to.
