The sequence kwa + ku- introduces an action as a means, manner, reason, or object of evaluation: Alifaulu kwa kufanya mazoezi βShe succeeded by practicing.β The two occurrences are not a doubled prefix. Kwa is a separate relational word; ku- begins the class-15 infinitive.
English translates the construction with by -ing, for -ing, because of -ing, or an evaluative for ... to. Choose the relation from the whole clause rather than assigning kwa one universal preposition.
The structure stays two words
| Analytic build | Finished phrase | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| kwa + ku-fany-a | kwa kufanya | by doing |
| kwa + ku-tumi-a | kwa kutumia | by using |
| kwa + ku-saidi-a | kwa kusaidia | for helping |
| kwa + ku-chelew-a | kwa kuchelewa | for/because of being late |
| kwa + ku-ni-jib-u | kwa kunijibu | for answering me |
| kwa + ku-to-hudhuri-a | kwa kutohudhuria | for not attending |
| kwa + ku-i-fungu-a | kwa kuifungua | by opening it |
| kwa + ku-fik-a | kwa kufika | through/by arriving |
Write a space after kwa, then keep the infinitive itself solid. Object marker -ni- follows infinitival ku- in kunijibu; negative -to- follows it in kutohudhuria.
Means and method: βby doingβ
Aliboresha Kiswahili chake kwa kusikiliza redio kila asubuhi.
She improved her Swahili by listening to the radio every morning.
The listening is the method that produced improvement. The main event has past a-li-boresh-a; kusikiliza remains nonfinite.
Tulifungua mlango kwa kutumia ufunguo wa ziada.
We opened the door by using the spare key.
Unaweza kupunguza gharama kwa kununua tiketi mapema.
You can reduce the cost by buying the ticket early.
The subject of the infinitive is normally understood from context, commonly the main-clause subject. This resembles control, but kwa explicitly frames the event as a method rather than as the selected complement of kuweza.
Manner and accompanying behavior
The construction can characterize how an action is performed, especially when the secondary action reveals attitude or behavior.
Mzungumzaji alisisitiza hoja yake kwa kugonga meza kwa nguvu.
The speaker emphasized his point by pounding the table.
Alijibu swali kwa kutabasamu, bila kusema neno.
She answered the question with a smile, without saying a word.
English may prefer an -ing adjunct or a noun phrase. Swahili keeps a class-15 event after kwa. For a simultaneous event with its own verbal viewpoint, a -ki- clause may be better; kwa ku- foregrounds manner or means.
Cause, praise, blame, thanks, and apology
After reactions and evaluations, kwa + infinitive identifies the action that motivates them.
Asante kwa kunisaidia kubeba mizigo yangu.
Thank you for helping me carry my luggage.
Samahani kwa kuchelewa kukujibu.
Sorry for taking so long to reply to you.
Meneja alimpongeza Amina kwa kutatua tatizo haraka.
The manager praised Amina for solving the problem quickly.
Aliadhibiwa kwa kutumia nyaraka za uongo.
He was punished for using false documents.
The same surface structure can be favorable, neutral, or unfavorable; the governing expression supplies the evaluation. In (formal) institutional writing, kwa kutotimiza masharti βfor failing to meet the conditionsβ is common because it packages the cause compactly.
Kampuni ilitozwa faini kwa kutowasilisha taarifa kwa wakati.
The company was fined for not submitting the report on time.
Evaluative βfor someone to doβ
In a different but related frame, kwa can introduce the person for whom an action is easy, difficult, important, or unusual. The experiencer comes after kwa; the infinitive follows separately.
Ni vigumu kwangu kuelewa maelekezo bila kuona mfano.
It is difficult for me to understand the instructions without seeing an example.
Ni muhimu kwa watoto kupata muda wa kucheza nje.
It is important for children to have time to play outside.
Here kwangu and kwa watoto are not instruments. They identify the evaluator or affected participant, while kuelewa and kupata name the evaluated action. The impersonal predicate avoids falsely making watoto the subject of ni muhimu.
When the infinitive itself is the grammatical subject, it can trigger class-15 concord:
Kufanya mazoezi kila siku kumemsaidia kurudi kazini.
Exercising every day has helped him return to work.
Here there is no initial kwa: the class-15 infinitive itself is the subject and therefore controls ku-me-m-saidi-a. Adding kwa would instead invite a means relation and would need an independently expressed result. Distinguishing subject ku- from relational kwa + ku- prevents a common false parse.
Means is not purpose
Kwa ku- explains how or why an event occurs. Purpose normally uses ili plus a subjunctive, or a motion/control infinitive where licensed.
Alienda maktabani ili asome bila usumbufu.
She went to the library so that she could study without interruption.
Alifaulu mtihani kwa kusoma bila usumbufu.
She passed the exam by studying without interruption.
The first answers βfor what purpose did she go?β The second answers βhow did she pass?β English to study and by studying make the contrast visible; Swahili uses different linking grammar. See purpose with ili.
Common Mistakes
Joining kwa to the infinitive
β Alijifunza kwakuuliza maswali mengi.
Incorrect spelling β kwa is separate from the ku- infinitive.
β Alijifunza kwa kuuliza maswali mengi.
He learned by asking many questions.
Separating ku- from its stem

Incorrect β kunisaidia is one infinitive word.
β Asante kwa kunisaidia jana.
Thank you for helping me yesterday.
Using kwa ku- for a clear purpose clause
β Tulifika mapema kwa ku tupate viti vizuri.
Incorrect β a purpose with an overt subject requires ili plus a subjunctive form.
β Tulifika mapema ili tupate viti vizuri.
We arrived early so that we could get good seats.
Making the infinitive finite
β Alipunguza matumizi kwa alikuwa anazima taa.
Incorrect after kwa in this means construction β use a class-15 infinitive.
β Alipunguza matumizi kwa kuzima taa zisizohitajika.
She reduced consumption by switching off unnecessary lights.
Misplacing infinitival negation
β Aliomba msamaha kwa hakuja kwenye kikao.

β Aliomba msamaha kwa kutokuja kwenye kikao.
He apologized for not coming to the meeting.
Key Takeaways
- Kwa is separate; the following ku- belongs to the infinitive.
- The construction expresses means, manner, reason, thanks, blame, or apology according to context.
- Evaluative frames use kwa for the experiencer: ni vigumu kwangu kuelewa.
- Use ili plus subjunctive for explicit purpose, not instrumental kwa ku-.
