Kusoma means both “read” and “study.” It is a regular verb with base som-a, but its English translation depends on the object and setting: kusoma gazeti is “read a newspaper,” kusoma historia can be “study history,” and kusoma chuo kikuu means “study at university.”
That semantic range is not an irregular conjugation. The verb retains the same stem while its arguments identify a text, an academic subject, or an educational setting. Applicative somea adds a beneficiary or goal, and passive somwa makes the text or other patient the grammatical subject.
Practical paradigm
| Form | I | you (sg.) | he/she | we | you (pl.) | they |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| present | ninasoma | unasoma | anasoma | tunasoma | mnasoma | wanasoma |
| past | nilisoma | ulisoma | alisoma | tulisoma | mlisoma | walisoma |
| perfect | nimesoma | umesoma | amesoma | tumesoma | mmesoma | wamesoma |
| future | nitasoma | utasoma | atasoma | tutasoma | mtasoma | watasoma |
| present negative | sisomi | husomi | hasomi | hatusomi | hamsomi | hawasomi |
| past negative | sikusoma | hukusoma | hakusoma | hatukusoma | hamkusoma | hawakusoma |
| subjunctive | nisome | usome | asome | tusome | msome | wasome |
The singular imperative is soma! and the plural is someni! Regular present ni-na-som-a contrasts with present negative si-som-i and subjunctive ni-som-e. These forms are neutral in (informal) and (formal) Standard Swahili unless a context below says otherwise.
Ninasoma ujumbe wako sasa, halafu nitakupigia simu.
I am reading your message now, and then I will call you.
Hatusomi sura hiyo wiki hii kwa sababu mwalimu hayupo.
We are not studying that chapter this week because the teacher is away.
Tafadhali msome mkataba wote kabla ya kuutia saini.
Please read the entire contract before signing it.
Reading a text
The text is a direct object. No preposition equivalent to English “from” or “in” is required merely because words appear on paper or a screen.
| Construction | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|
| kusoma kitabu/gazeti | read a book/newspaper |
| kusoma ujumbe/barua pepe | read a message/email |
| kusoma ripoti/mkataba | read a report/contract, often (formal) |
| kusoma kwa sauti | read aloud |
| kusoma kimya | read silently |
Amina alisoma barua pepe mara mbili ili ahakikishe tarehe ya mahojiano.
Amina read the email twice to confirm the interview date.
Baba anawasomea watoto hadithi kwa sauti kabla hawajalala.
Dad reads the children a story aloud before they go to sleep.
The second sentence uses applicative a-na-wa-som-e-a. Plural-human object -wa- identifies the beneficiaries, while hadithi is the text. The basic verb would describe reading the story; somea integrates the person for whom it is read.
Studying and educational settings
With an academic subject, course, or institution, soma means “study” or “be enrolled.” English divides “read” and “study” lexically; Swahili lets context do that work.
Dada yangu anasoma kemia katika chuo kikuu mjini Dodoma.
My sister studies chemistry at a university in Dodoma.
Here kemia is the subject studied, while katika chuo kikuu gives the institution. In everyday (informal) speech, speakers also say anasoma chuo kikuu “she studies at university,” with the institution directly after the verb.
Tulisoma kwa bidii mwezi mzima, lakini mtihani ulikuwa mgumu kuliko tulivyotarajia.
We studied hard for the whole month, but the exam was harder than we expected.
Used without an object, tulisoma means “we studied” because the examination context supplies the activity. Kwa bidii expresses manner; it is not an object marker or a required complement.
Applicative somea
Applicative somea has build som-e-a. It can add a beneficiary—someone for whom a text is read—or a goal/qualification toward which someone studies. The two meanings come from the surrounding nouns.
Kila jioni ninamsomea bibi yangu habari muhimu za siku.
Every evening I read my grandmother the day's important news.
Ni-na-m-som-e-a contains the singular-human object marker -m- for bibi yangu. The news remains the content read.
Neema anasomea ualimu kwa sababu anataka kufanya kazi katika shule ya msingi.
Neema is training to be a teacher because she wants to work in a primary school.
In this established goal reading, anasomea ualimu is more specific than general anasoma: it presents teaching as the profession or qualification being pursued. There is no one mechanical English preposition that translates applicative -e- in every sentence.
Passive somwa
Passive somwa is built som-w-a. The text becomes the subject and therefore controls subject agreement; the reader may be omitted or introduced with na.
Ripoti hii itasomwa na wajumbe kabla ya mjadala kuanza.
This report will be read by the members before the discussion begins.
Class 9 ripoti selects i- in i-ta-som-w-a. The na wajumbe phrase names the agent, but passive grammar does not require it.
Vitabu hivi vinasomwa sana na vijana katika maktaba ya jamii.
These books are widely read by young people in the community library.
Class 8 vitabu controls vi- in vi-na-som-w-a. Do not keep a human subject marker merely because English translation adds “people.” See passive formation for the wider agreement pattern.
Common collocations and neighboring verbs
Kusoma ramani can mean “read a map,” and kusoma alama means interpret marks or signs. Jifunza means “learn” and highlights acquiring knowledge or skill; fundishwa means “be taught.” Studying can lead to learning, but the verbs are not interchangeable.
Ninasoma Kiswahili kila asubuhi, lakini bado ninajifunza kutumia ngeli kwa usahihi.
I study Swahili every morning, but I am still learning to use noun classes accurately.
The first verb names the study activity; the second emphasizes knowledge still being acquired.
Common Mistakes
Adding a preposition before the text
⚠️ Ninasoma kwa kitabu kipya kuhusu historia ya pwani.
Grammatical if the book is a study resource; for reading the book itself, make it the direct object.
✅ Ninasoma kitabu kipya kuhusu historia ya pwani wakati wa mapumziko.
I am reading a new book about coastal history during the break.
Keeping final -a in present negation
❌ Juma hasoma ujumbe mrefu akiwa kazini.
Incorrect — regular present negative changes final -a to -i.
✅ Juma hasomi ujumbe mrefu akiwa kazini kwa sababu huwa na shughuli nyingi.
Juma does not read long messages at work because he is usually busy.
Using the basic verb for an added beneficiary
❌ Ninamsoma mtoto hadithi kabla ya kulala.
Incorrect for ‘read a story to the child’ — use applicative somea.
✅ Ninamsomea mtoto hadithi fupi kabla ya kulala kila usiku.
I read the child a short story before bed every night.
Treating study and learn as identical
❌ Ninasoma kuendesha gari kila Jumamosi asubuhi.
Wrong verb for acquiring a practical skill — use reflexive kujifunza.
✅ Ninajifunza kuendesha gari kila Jumamosi asubuhi na mwalimu wangu.
I am learning to drive every Saturday morning with my instructor.
