kufungua — to Open

Kufungua means “open, unlock, untie, unpack,” depending on its object. It is transitive: an opener acts on a door, account, file, business, meeting, or tied object. Its stem ends in the vowel sequence -ua, producing present negative sifungui and subjunctive nifungue.

Two neighboring forms change the participant structure. Funguka presents something as opening without an expressed agent; funguliwa is passive and reports an opening event whose agent can be named. The lexical opposition funga/fungua also preserves reversive morphology, but modern learners should treat both verbs as established stems.

Analyze fungu-a: present negative si-fungu-i → sifungui and subjunctive ni-fungu-e → nifungue. Imperatives are fungua and fungueni; prohibitions are usifungue/msifungue.

Ninafungua madirisha ili hewa safi iingie ndani.

I am opening the windows so that fresh air comes in.

Hawafungui ofisi siku za Jumapili.

They do not open the office on Sundays.

Tufungue boksi hili kwa uangalifu tusiharibu vilivyomo.

Let us open this box carefully so that we do not damage its contents.

💡
Keep both vowels at the end of the stem: fungua, fungui, fungue. Present negative and subjunctive replace only the ordinary final -a.

Concrete opening and object marking

Fungua mlango wa nyuma; wageni wamefika.

Open the back door; the guests have arrived.

Mlinzi alifungua lango saa kumi na mbili asubuhi.

The guard opened the gate at six in the morning.

A specific object already known in discourse can be indexed by noun class.

Dirisha hili limekwama; usilifungue kwa nguvu.

This window is stuck; do not open it by force.

U-si-li-fungu-e contains negative subjunctive -si-, class 5 object marker -li-, root fungu-, and final -e.

Vifurushi vilipofika, tulivifungua mbele ya msimamizi.

When the parcels arrived, we opened them in front of the supervisor.

Class 8 vifurushi is indexed by -vi- in tu-li-vi-fungu-a.

Institutional and digital meanings

The object determines the natural English equivalent.

Nimefungua akaunti mpya ili nipokee malipo ya wateja.

I have opened a new account so that I can receive customer payments.

Waziri alifungua mkutano kwa hotuba fupi.

The minister formally opened the meeting with a short speech.

These are current Standard Swahili. Institutional uses are prominent in (formal) speech, while digital fungua faili/kiungo is neutral across registers.

Action versus an already open state

Kufungua names an action or change. To describe something as simply open, use kuwa wazi or a locative copular form plus wazi.

Duka liko wazi sasa, lakini lilifunguliwa dakika chache zilizopita.

The shop is open now, but it was opened a few minutes ago.

The first clause describes the current state; the second reports the opening event. English “is open” can express either, so the Swahili choice forces the speaker to decide whether an event matters.

Faili iko wazi kwenye kompyuta yangu; usiifungue tena.

The file is open on my computer; do not open it again.

This distinction is especially useful in (formal) incident reports and technical support, where state and action must not be confused.

Funguka: open without an agent

Funguka makes the opening entity the subject and does not license an agent as the performer.

Mlango ulifunguka ghafla upepo ulipozidi.

The door opened suddenly when the wind grew stronger.

Begi limefunguka na nguo zimeanguka barabarani.

The bag has come open and the clothes have fallen onto the road.

The build u-li-fung-uk-a contains reversive/intransitive -uk-. The clause reports the change of state, not somebody’s act.

Funguliwa: be opened by someone

Passive funguliwa presents an actual opening event and may add the agent with na.

Lango lilifunguliwa na mlinzi baada ya kukagua vitambulisho.

The gate was opened by the guard after the identity cards were checked.

Li-li-fungu-li-w-a has an adjusted passive shape after the vowel sequence of fungua. The agent mlinzi follows na.

Akaunti yangu imefunguliwa leo, lakini kadi bado haijafika.

My account was opened today, but the card has not arrived yet.

For the agent and state test, see stative versus passive.

💡
Imefunguka answers “what happened to it?” without profiling an opener. Imefunguliwa answers “what was done to it?” and permits na + agent.

Reversive relation to kufunga

Historically, reversive morphology relates funga “close/tie” to fungua “open/untie.” Synchronically, meanings are lexical: opening an account is not literally reversing a tied account. Learn each collocation with the whole verb. The broader pattern is discussed under separative reversives.

Common Mistakes

Dropping the u in negative forms

❌ Sifungi faili hii.

Wrong verb for ‘I am not opening’; sifungi means ‘I am not closing/tying.’

✅ Sifungui faili hii.

I am not opening this file.

Using funguka with an agent

❌ Mlango ulifunguka na mlinzi.

Incorrect agent structure — funguka suppresses an external opener.

✅ Mlango ulifunguliwa na mlinzi.

The door was opened by the guard.

Using passive for a spontaneous event

❌ Begi lilifunguliwa lenyewe njiani.

Wrong viewpoint for ‘came open by itself.’

✅ Begi lilifunguka lenyewe njiani.

The bag came open by itself on the way.

Giving the object the wrong class marker

❌ Dirisha hili usikifungue.

Incorrect — class 5 dirisha takes -li-, not class 7 -ki-.

✅ Dirisha hili usilifungue.

Do not open this window.

Key Takeaways

  • Kufungua is transitive and keeps the vowel sequence in sifungui/nifungue.
  • Concrete, institutional, and digital meanings depend on the object collocation.
  • Funguka presents spontaneous opening; funguliwa is passive and permits an agent.
  • Funga/fungua reflect a reversive relationship but are best learned as established lexical stems.
