B2 is where familiar Swahili systems begin operating several at a time. A clause may contain an applicative, two objects, a relative marker, and a discourse-sensitive word order; a paragraph may then shift between conversational and edited style. This page gives an exact study order. It deliberately does not reteach the linked lessons.
The central principle is cumulative reuse. Concord comes before relatives because relative markers agree with a head noun. The verb template comes before extensions because extensions alter the stem inside that template. Argument roles come before passive promotion because you cannot predict what is promoted until you know what each object is doing.
Prerequisite Check
Complete the B1 path first. Before beginning B2, you should be able to segment an ordinary finite verb, maintain common noun-class agreement, contrast -li- with -me-, form positive and negative clauses, and recognize the basic relative and passive systems.
Use these as diagnostics, not new lessons. Say which noun controls every marked dependent and identify the verb slots aloud.
Vitabu hivi vipya vimefika, lakini sijavipanga bado.
These new books have arrived, but I have not arranged them yet.
Nilipofungua mlango, watoto wakaingia na kukaa kimya.
When I opened the door, the children came in and sat quietly.
Mwalimu alimwandikia mzazi ujumbe baada ya somo.
The teacher wrote the parent a message after the lesson.
If you cannot explain vi- across the first sentence, the slot order in sijavipanga, the chronology of nilipofungua β¦ wakaingia, or the recipient marker in alimwandikia, review the concord reference map, the complete verb template, and the B1 path. Do not compensate by memorizing a B2 ending in isolation.
Exact Reading Order
Stage 1: Build valency before moving objects
- Verb extensions overview β establish how extensions change meaning and participant structure.
- Extension vowel harmony β make extension shapes recognizable before combining them with full syntax.
- Verbs with two objects β identify recipient or beneficiary and theme in a neutral clause.
- Benefactive applicatives β add a beneficiary without losing the original object.
- Locative applicatives β compare an applied location with an ordinary locative phrase.
- Object promotion in the passive β move an established participant only after its role is clear.
- Stative versus passive β separate a resulting state from an event affecting a promoted subject.
Milestone 1: take five active clauses from pages 3β6. Label actor, recipient or beneficiary, theme, and location. Then change the information focus without inventing a second object-marker slot.
Asha aliwapikia wageni supu, kisha wageni wakapewa mikate mezani.
Asha cooked soup for the guests, then the guests were given bread at the table.
Your analysis should track the human participants across active applicative aliwapikia and passive wakapewa. If you are deciding only from English word order, repeat pages 3 and 6.
Review Loop A
Return to object markers and extension vowel harmony. Re-segment three B2 verbs containing no more than one extension from right to left: root and extension first, then object marker, then TAM and subject. This prevents a long verb from becoming an unanalyzed vocabulary item without requiring the C1 system for stacking several extensions.
Stage 2: Place hypothetical meaning on the time line
- The nge conditional β secure the productive hypothesis pattern.
- -nge- or -ngali-/-ngeli-? β choose viewpoint from time and counterfactual distance, not from English would.
- Concessive conditions β distinguish βeven ifβ from an ordinary ifβthen relation. Leave systematic negative and mixed-time counterfactuals for the C1 path.
Ningalipokea taarifa mapema, ningalijiandaa vizuri kwa mahojiano ya jana.
If I had received the information early, I would have prepared well for yesterday's interview.
Milestone 2: place both events on a completed-past time line and justify the remote-counterfactual marker in both clauses. Then write one open future proposal and one closed past alternative. If English would is your only explanation, repeat pages 8β10.
Stage 3: Extend concord through relative clauses
- Relative concord table β treat the head noun as the source of the relative form.
- Incorporated relatives overview β locate relative concord inside the finite verb.
- Present relatives, then past relatives β add time only after the concord slot is stable.
- Object relatives with amba- β track the missing object and any object marker independently.
- Locative relatives β connect -po, -ko, -mo with the intended spatial viewpoint.
- amba- or an incorporated relative? β select a strategy for processing load and register.
- Relative-clause placement β keep the clause adjacent enough to its head to prevent reference drift.
Maelekezo tuliyowatumia washiriki jana ndiyo yatakayotumiwa katika warsha.
The instructions that we sent the participants yesterday are the ones that will be used in the workshop.
Milestone 3: identify the head of tuliyowatumia, the human object inside it, and the controller of yatakayotumiwa. Then paraphrase the first relative with an appropriate amba- form and compare readability.
Review Loop B
Choose one class 3/4 noun, one class 5/6 noun, and one class 7/8 noun. Build a four-item chain for each: demonstrative, adjective, relative clause, main verb. Check every form against the reference table. This is a concord review, not a vocabulary exercise.
Stage 4: Organize clauses and information
- Subordinate clause architecture β decide which proposition frames or depends on another.
- Complement clauses with kwamba β separate a reported proposition from an infinitival complement.
- Topicalization and focus with ni β distinguish what discourse is about from what is contrastively asserted.
- Contrast markers, concession, and sentence adverbs β make logical relation and speaker stance explicit.
- Indirect questions β embed a question without importing English inversion.
Kuhusu gharama, meneja alieleza kwamba bajeti ingeongezeka, ingawa kiasi kamili hakikujulikana.
Regarding the cost, the manager explained that the budget would increase, although the exact amount was not known.
Milestone 4: mark topic, source, embedded proposition, concession, and the class controller of hakikujulikana. Reorder the facts as a short spoken answer, then restore them as a self-contained written paragraph.
Stage 5: Match the audience
- Spoken versus written Standard Swahili β compare what shared context permits in speech with what an absent reader needs.
- What Standard Swahili represents β distinguish a cross-border edited norm from any one person's entire repertoire.
- Digital messaging β practice concise (informal) writing without treating abbreviations or code-switching as compulsory.
- Living in multilingual East Africa β interpret language choice as audience- and setting-sensitive, not as a simple national label.
Tafadhali nitumie uthibitisho kabla ya saa sita; tukichelewa, nafasi hiyo inaweza kutolewa kwa mwombaji mwingine.
Please send me confirmation before noon; if we are late, that place may be offered to another applicant. (formal message)
Rewrite this as a message to a close friend and as a notice to all applicants. Preserve the facts while changing address, explicitness, and responsibility. That contrast is the register milestone.
Stage 6: Integrate through annotated texts
- Read the journey narrative for chronology, motion, and viewpoint.
- Read the friendly message for future plans, requests, and (informal) digital cohesion.
- Read the clinic dialogue for turn design, bodily-state expressions, object marking, and respectful advice.
- Read Asiyefunzwa na mamaye for a compact traditional text whose grammar and social interpretation must be read together.
For each text, first read without annotations and write a four-sentence summary. Then consult the analysis, correct your summary, and collect two structures for production. This βattempt β annotate β revise β reuseβ loop is more effective than passively reading the notes once.
Completion Test
Write a 220β280 word text in current edited Standard Swahili about a delayed community event. It must include two participants affected differently, one applicative or double-object clause, one passive, an incorporated relative, one amba- relative, a hypothetical consequence, explicit contrast or concession, and a closing recommendation. Then adapt the core information into a four-message (informal) exchange.
This short model shows the density expected, not a template to copy:
Waandalizi waliwatumia washiriki ujumbe ulioeleza kwamba mkutano umeahirishwa. Kama ukumbi ungepatikana kesho, shughuli ingeendelea, lakini wageni ambao tayari wamesafiri wangepewa taarifa mpya. Kwa hiyo, kamati imeomba kila mshiriki athibitishe siku ambayo ataweza kufika.
The organizers sent participants a message explaining that the meeting had been postponed. If the hall were available tomorrow, the event would continue, but guests who had already travelled would be given new information. Therefore, the committee has asked every participant to confirm the day on which they can come.
Pass only when you can annotate your own controller chains and verb slots, explain every information-structure choice, and produce the register adaptation without changing the facts. If errors cluster in one system, return to that stage and then repeat the integrated task.
Common Mistakes
β Aliwamkipikia wageni wali wa nazi.
Incorrect β two object markers have been forced into the ordinary object slot.
β Aliwapikia wageni wali wa nazi kwa chakula cha mchana.
She cooked coconut rice for the guests for lunch.
Return to Stage 1 and label beneficiary and theme before rebuilding the verb.
β Vituo anayojengwa karibu na soko vitafunguliwa kesho.
Incorrect β the relative verb has human singular agreement instead of class 8 concord.
β Vituo vinavyojengwa karibu na soko vitafunguliwa kesho.
The centers being built near the market will be opened tomorrow.
Return to Stage 3 and trace vituo β vinavyojengwa β vitafunguliwa.
β Ningeli ku saidia kama ungenipigia jana.
Incorrect β the conditional verb complex has been split into separate words.
β Ningelikusaidia kama ungelinipigia mapema jana.
I would have helped you if you had called me early yesterday.
Return to the verb-template review and write the finished form without analytic hyphens.
β Maombi itakayochelewa haitapokelewa na ofisi.
Incorrect β the class 6 subject has been treated as class 9 throughout.
β Maombi yatakayochelewa hayatapokelewa na ofisi.
Applications that are late will not be accepted by the office.
This is not a βformal styleβ problem; it is a controller-chain failure. Repair concord before polishing register.
Key Takeaways
- Follow the dependency order: verb template and roles β extensions and promotion β hypothetical time β relative concord β discourse β register.
- Every review loop returns a new B2 structure to the concord and verb systems learned earlier.
- Annotated texts become productive only when you attempt, check, revise, and reuse their structures.
- Move to the C1 path when integrated production is stable, not merely when every B2 page has been opened.
Now practice Swahili
