Swahili uses mia for hundreds, elfu for thousands, and milioni for millions. Unlike English, the magnitude word normally comes before its multiplier: mia mbili is literally “hundreds two,” elfu tatu “thousands three,” and milioni nne “millions four.”
The system becomes manageable when you read it in descending blocks. First identify millions, then thousands, then hundreds, tens, and units. The small final unit may still show noun-class agreement, but the magnitude words and most larger numeral material remain unchanged.
Exact hundreds

The multiplier follows mia in its bare counting form. Do not turn mia mbili into mia miwili by treating it as an ordinary class 4 noun phrase. These are established numerical constructions.
Ukumbi huu una viti mia tatu na meza ishirini.
This hall has three hundred chairs and twenty tables.
Class 8 viti still controls vi- in any agreeing words elsewhere, but the quantity is mia tatu, not mia vitatu. Class 9 meza likewise takes bare ishirini.
Adding tens and units after a hundred
Within a three-digit number, place the tens and units after the mia + multiplier block:

The most stable na is the one inside a two-digit remainder: sabini na mbili. When the tens place is zero, na links the hundred directly to the units: mia nane na tano. When a tens or teen block follows, Standard usage commonly proceeds without an extra na after mia: mia moja ishirini na sita.
An additional boundary na before a tens or teen remainder is also established in current Standard usage: mia moja na ishirini na sita and elfu mbili na ishirini na sita occur alongside forms without that boundary na. Institutional and regional styles differ here. This optional boundary marker must not be confused with the na inside ishirini na sita, which is required whenever the two-digit block has a nonzero unit.
Mia mbili arobaini na tano ukitoa mia moja ni mia moja arobaini na tano.
Two hundred forty-five minus one hundred is one hundred forty-five.
This spoken calculation uses bare numeral forms because no classed noun is being modified.
Thousands with elfu
Elfu precedes its multiplier:

The entire number after elfu tells how many thousands. A lower remainder then follows in descending order.
Maktaba ilipokea vitabu elfu mbili mia tatu hamsini mwaka jana.
The library received two thousand three hundred fifty books last year.
The number is 2,350: elfu mbili + mia tatu + hamsini. Class 8 vitabu controls class 8 subject vi- if the noun phrase becomes the subject: Vitabu... vilipokelewa. It does not change elfu or mia.
Mwaka elfu mbili na ishirini na sita, kituo kitafungua maabara mpya.
In the year 2026, the center will open a new laboratory.
Because there is no hundreds block in 2026, na links elfu mbili to the final 26. Year numbers in formal documents are often accompanied by digits for rapid checking.
Idadi iliongezeka kutoka elfu moja na tano hadi elfu moja mia mbili.
The total increased from 1,005 to 1,200.
In elfu moja na tano, the remainder is a lone unit; in elfu moja mia mbili, a hundreds block follows directly.
Millions with milioni
Milioni works on the same magnitude-first principle:

That city has more than two million residents.
The amount phrase is shilingi milioni kumi na mbili, with the counted noun first. In the population example, milioni mbili is a quantity after zaidi ya. Neither expression uses mamilioni for an exact count. Plural mamilioni exists with the non-exact sense “millions,” as in mamilioni ya watu, but that is a lexical quantity expression rather than the exact cardinal structure taught here.
Descending blocks in one long number
Read 1,002,506 as three blocks:
milioni moja | elfu mbili | mia tano na sita
Kampuni iliripoti mapato ya shilingi milioni moja elfu mbili mia tano na sita.
The company reported revenue of 1,002,506 shillings.
In financial writing (formal), digits should normally accompany a long spelled-out amount because a missing block is costly: shilingi 1,002,506. Commas or pauses may separate magnitude blocks in running prose, but the internal order remains largest to smallest.
There is some variation in how long official amounts group and punctuate thousands. This page uses the transparent milioni → elfu → mia → tens → units route. There is no honest one-line rule that eliminates the need to rehearse long amounts aloud.
Skip empty place-value blocks
Ordinary cardinal reading names the nonzero blocks; it does not insert sifuri for every empty decimal place.
Idadi ya mwisho ni elfu tatu na nne, yaani 3,004.
The final total is three thousand four, that is, 3,004.
There is no hundreds or tens block, so the expression moves from elfu tatu directly through na to nne. Saying four separate digits—tatu, sifuri, sifuri, nne—would be appropriate for a code, not for the cardinal quantity 3,004.
Nambari ya kumbukumbu ina tarakimu sita, lakini jumla ya malipo ni shilingi elfu sita.
The reference number has six digits, but the total payment is six thousand shillings.
The first part talks about the length of an identifier; the second names a magnitude. Keeping codes and quantities separate prevents an accidental hundredfold or thousandfold error.
Noun agreement belongs to the head, with one important remainder effect
The counted noun continues to control demonstratives and the finite verb:
Wafanyakazi elfu mbili wamepokea vitambulisho vipya.
Two thousand employees have received new identity cards.
Magari elfu mbili yamesajiliwa katika mkoa huo mwaka huu.
Two thousand cars have been registered in that region this year.
The quantity elfu mbili is identical, but human wafanyakazi controls wa-me-, while class 6 magari controls ya-me-.
If a compound number ends in an agreeing low unit, that final unit reflects the counted noun:
Wafanyakazi elfu mbili mia moja na watatu walihudhuria mkutano mkuu.
Two thousand one hundred three employees attended the general meeting.
Vitabu elfu moja na viwili vimeongezwa kwenye katalogi.
One thousand two books have been added to the catalog.
The magnitude words remain bare; only wa-tatu and vi-wili show head-class concord. This is the same small agreement-bearing set explained in one-through-five agreement.
A practical price exchange
—Kompyuta hiyo ni bei gani? —Ni shilingi milioni moja; unaweza kulipa kwa awamu mbili.
—What is the price of that computer? —It is one million shillings; you can pay in two installments.
The amount uses exact milioni moja. Class 10 awamu takes bare mbili. In careful sales documents (formal), digits alongside words prevent disagreement about magnitude.
Clock time is a separate convention: saa mbili asubuhi means 8:00 a.m., not 2:00 a.m. Do not apply the clock conversion to amounts, years, or calculations.

Copying English multiplier order
❌ Tiketi mbili mia ziliuzwa jana.
Incorrect — exact hundreds use magnitude-first mia mbili.
✅ Tiketi mia mbili ziliuzwa jana.
Two hundred tickets were sold yesterday.
Adding noun-class concord to the magnitude multiplier
❌ Viti mia viwili vimepangwa ukumbini.
Incorrect — the exact numerical block is mia mbili, not mia viwili.
✅ Viti mia mbili vimepangwa ukumbini.
Two hundred chairs have been arranged in the hall.
Omitting na before a lone unit remainder
❌ Jumla ni mia nne tano.
Incorrect — 405 requires na before the lone unit.
✅ Jumla ni mia nne na tano.
The total is four hundred five.
Replacing head-noun verb agreement with the number’s shape
❌ Magari elfu tatu zimekaguliwa.
Incorrect — the verb agrees with class 6 magari, not with elfu.
✅ Magari elfu tatu yamekaguliwa.
Three thousand cars have been inspected.
Applying East African clock conversion to an ordinary number
❌ Shilingi elfu mbili ni elfu nane kwa sababu saa mbili ni saa nane.
Incorrect — the six-hour conversion belongs only to clock-hour expressions.
✅ Shilingi elfu mbili ni elfu mbili; saa mbili asubuhi ni saa nane kwa mfumo wa kimataifa.
Two thousand shillings is two thousand; East African hour two in the morning is eight o’clock internationally.
