Speakers and writers do more than introduce information: they tell an audience which domain is currently under discussion, signal a controlled shift, and recover an earlier thread after a digression. Kuhusu opens a neutral topic, kwa upande wa selects one side or domain for contrast, and tukirudi announces a return to something already discussed.
These expressions organize the discourse; they do not replace the grammar inside the following clause. Once a topic is active, Swahili often maintains it through noun-class concord, subject markers, object markers, demonstratives, and understood subjects. Repeating an English-like “as for” at every sentence boundary can therefore make a coherent Swahili paragraph sound mechanically segmented.
Three operations, not three synonyms
| Expression | Discourse operation | Typical translation | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| kuhusu + noun phrase | names the domain now being discussed | about, regarding, concerning | neutral; frequent in speech and writing |
| kwa upande wa + noun phrase | selects one dimension or participant, often against another | as for, with regard to, on the ... side | neutral to (formal) |
| tukirudi kwenye/katika + noun phrase | resumes an earlier topic after an interruption or digression | returning to, to return to | neutral; tukirejea is common in (formal) exposition |
The choice depends on discourse history. A new topic can be introduced kuhusu bajeti. A budget contrasted with staffing can be framed kwa upande wa bajeti. Only a budget discussed earlier can naturally be resumed with tukirudi kwenye bajeti.
Kuhusu opens or delimits a topic
Kuhusu is an invariant relational word followed directly by its complement. It can introduce a noun, name, pronoun, or nominal expression. It does not agree with that complement.
Kuhusu ombi lako, tutakutumia jibu kabla ya Ijumaa.
Regarding your application, we will send you an answer before Friday.
Tunahitaji kuzungumza kuhusu namna tutakavyogawana gharama za matengenezo.
We need to talk about how we will share the repair costs.
At the left edge, kuhusu ombi lako is a topic frame: it tells the reader where the proposition belongs. After a verb such as kuzungumza, kuhusu introduces what the speech is about. The relational form is the same in both uses.
Because kuhusu already expresses “about,” Standard Swahili does not add an English-shaped genitive connector after it. Say kuhusu mradi, not kuhusu ya mradi. A longer phrase such as kuhusu utekelezaji wa mradi is grammatical because wa mradi depends on utekelezaji, not on kuhusu.
Kuhusu utekelezaji wa mradi, hatua ya kwanza imekamilika, lakini vifaa vya hatua ya pili havijafika.
Regarding implementation of the project, the first phase is complete, but the materials for the second phase have not arrived.
One initial frame is enough. Class agreement then helps maintain the referents: class 9 hatua appears in imekamilika, while class 8 vifaa appears in havijafika. The paragraph is cohesive even without repeating kuhusu.
Kwa upande wa selects a side or dimension
Kwa upande wa literally builds on class 3 upande “side/aspect.” The wa is the class-3 associative connector selected by upande, so it remains wa regardless of the noun that follows:
| Frame | Function | Natural context |
|---|---|---|
| kwa upande wa gharama | select the cost dimension | contrasting cost with time or quality |
| kwa upande wa walimu | select the teachers' situation or view | contrasting stakeholder groups |
| kwa upande wangu | state the speaker's own contribution or position | “for my part” |
Kwa upande wa gharama, chaguo la kwanza ni nafuu; kwa upande wa muda, la pili linafaa zaidi.
In terms of cost, the first option is cheaper; in terms of time, the second is more suitable.
Kwa upande wa wazazi, wengi wamekubali ratiba mpya, lakini baadhi yao wameomba usafiri uanze mapema.
As for the parents, most have accepted the new schedule, but some of them have asked for transport to start earlier.
The first example makes a balanced two-part comparison. The second selects one stakeholder group, then sustains it through class-2 wengi, wamekubali, and baadhi yao. Repeating kwa upande wa wazazi before every predicate would not add clarity.
Kwa upande wangu is a useful stance-and-topic blend. It means “for my part/from my side,” not simply “about me.”
Kwa upande wangu, nitakamilisha jedwali leo; Amina ataangalia takwimu kesho asubuhi.
For my part, I will complete the table today; Amina will check the figures tomorrow morning.
In a discussion, this marks the speaker's allocated contribution. For a neutral biography topic, kuhusu mimi would be possible in an appropriate contrast, but it does not carry the same sense of taking one's turn or responsibility.
Tukirudi explicitly resumes an earlier thread
Tukirudi is a finite conditional/simultaneous form built as tu-ki-rud-i: first-person plural subject tu-, -ki- “when/if/as,” and rudi “return.” In discourse, inclusive “we” invites speaker and audience to move back together: “when we return to...” or “returning to....” The following topic is commonly introduced by kwenye, katika, or a fuller phrase such as kwenye suala la.
Tukirudi kwenye suala la maji, fundi alisema pampu mpya itafika kesho.
Returning to the water issue, the technician said the new pump would arrive tomorrow.
Tukirudi katika hoja ya kwanza, ushahidi uliopo hauonyeshi kuwa bei ndiyo sababu pekee.
Returning to the first point, the available evidence does not show that price is the only cause.
The form presupposes an earlier mention. It would be disorienting at the very beginning of a report unless the report is explicitly resuming another meeting or document.
In (formal) and (academic) exposition, tukirejea “if/when we return; returning” is a deliberate alternative:
Tukirejea kwenye matokeo ya awali, tunaona kwamba tofauti hiyo iliongezeka baada ya mwezi wa tatu.
Returning to the earlier results, we see that the difference increased after the third month.
Both tukirudi and tukirejea are current Standard Swahili. Kurejea is especially at home in planned exposition; it is not required merely because the audience is educated.
Topic continuity after the frame
An English paragraph may repeat nouns or use pronouns with little grammatical information. Swahili distributes reference across concord. Once pendekezo “proposal” (class 5) is active, limepokelewa, hili, and litatekelezwa can all keep it accessible.
Kuhusu pendekezo la soko jipya, limepokelewa na halmashauri. Hili litajadiliwa tena baada ya tathmini ya mazingira kukamilika.
Regarding the proposal for a new market, it has been received by the council. It will be discussed again after the environmental assessment is completed.
The opening topic phrase is detached from the first clause, but the class-5 subject prefix li- in limepokelewa resumes it. The demonstrative hili then keeps the same referent prominent. See topicalization for the sentence-level structures behind this pattern.
People are often maintained through subject concord alone when reference is unambiguous:
Kwa upande wa Salma, amekubali kuongoza mafunzo na atatuma ratiba jioni.
As for Salma, she has agreed to lead the training and will send the schedule this evening.
The class-1 marker a- appears in both verbs. An independent yeye is unnecessary unless the speaker needs contrast or correction. Topic management and topic versus focus therefore work together.
A connected discussion in two registers
Spoken meeting update
Kuhusu ukumbi, tumethibitisha kuwa unapatikana Jumamosi. Kwa upande wa chakula, bado tunasubiri bei kutoka kwa wapishi wawili. Halafu—tukirudi kwenye usafiri—Juma amesema magari matatu yanatosha, lakini tuhakikishe idadi ya wageni leo.
About the hall, we have confirmed that it is available on Saturday. As for the food, we are still waiting for prices from two caterers. Then—returning to transport—Juma has said three vehicles are enough, but let's confirm the number of guests today.
This (informal) meeting turn uses short planning units. Kuhusu opens one workstream, kwa upande wa shifts to a second, and the pause before tukirudi makes an audible return to transport. The speaker does not frame every sentence: subject and noun-class agreement carry ukumbi, chakula, magari, and idadi locally.
Edited minutes
Kuhusu ukumbi, ilithibitishwa kuwa utapatikana Jumamosi. Bei za huduma ya chakula bado hazijapokelewa kutoka kwa wapishi wawili. Tukirejea kwenye suala la usafiri, Juma alieleza kuwa magari matatu yatatosha, kwa sharti kwamba idadi ya wageni ithibitishwe leo.
Regarding the hall, it was confirmed that it would be available on Saturday. Prices for the catering service have not yet been received from two caterers. Returning to the transport issue, Juma explained that three vehicles would be sufficient, provided that the number of guests is confirmed today.
The (formal) version removes the conversational halafu, gives chakula a precise institutional noun phrase, and uses tukirejea. Its passive forms serve the minutes' focus on decisions, but they are not what makes the passage formal; explicit reference and controlled organization do more of that work.
Common Mistakes
Adding an English-shaped connector after kuhusu
❌ Kuhusu ya malipo, benki haijajibu.
Incorrect — kuhusu takes its complement directly; ya is not licensed here.
✅ Kuhusu malipo, benki haijajibu bado.
Regarding payment, the bank has not replied yet.
Changing wa to match the following noun
❌ Kwa upande la usalama, taa za dharura hazifanyi kazi.
Incorrect — the associative agrees with class-3 upande, so it is wa, not la.
✅ Kwa upande wa usalama, taa za dharura hazifanyi kazi.
As for safety, the emergency lights are not working.
Announcing a return to a brand-new topic
❌ Tukirudi kwenye ada—hatujaitaja awali—kiwango kipya ni shilingi elfu ishirini.
Poor discourse logic — the sentence claims to return to fees even though they have not been mentioned.
✅ Kuhusu ada, kiwango kipya ni shilingi elfu ishirini.
Regarding the fee, the new amount is twenty thousand shillings.
Repeating a topic frame instead of using concord
❌ Kuhusu basi, limechelewa. Kuhusu basi, limeharibika. Kuhusu basi, halitafika leo.
Unnatural repetition — class-5 agreement already keeps the bus active.
✅ Kuhusu basi, limechelewa kwa sababu limeharibika, kwa hiyo halitafika leo.
As for the bus, it is late because it has broken down, so it will not arrive today.
Losing the resumed referent after a digression
❌ Tukirudi, itarekebishwa wiki ijayo.
Unclear — the audience is not told which earlier topic the class-9 subject marker resumes.
✅ Tukirudi kwenye mashine ya kuchapisha, itarekebishwa wiki ijayo.
Returning to the printer, it will be repaired next week.
Key Takeaways
- Use kuhusu to establish a neutral domain and kwa upande wa to select a contrasting dimension, participant, or responsibility.
- Use tukirudi or formal tukirejea only when an earlier thread can actually be retrieved.
- Kwa upande wa keeps wa because the connector agrees with class-3 upande.
- After a topic is active, concord, demonstratives, object markers, and understood subjects normally maintain it.
- A strong paragraph combines explicit topic frames with implicit reference continuity; it does not repeat a free connector at every boundary.
