Examples and Specification: kwa mfano, yaani

Kwa mfano and yaani both add information, but they make different promises. Kwa mfano selects one or more members of a larger category. Yaani tells the listener to reinterpret, define or specify what has just been said. Confusing them can turn a partial illustration into a false exhaustive definition.

Instance versus equivalence

MarkerRelationDiagnostic questionRegister
kwa mfanogeneral category → representative instance“What is one case of this?”neutral; common in (formal/academic) explanation
yaaniexpression → intended specification or clarification“What exactly do you mean?”neutral; especially frequent (informal) speech
mathalanigeneral category → instancesame as kwa mfanomainly (formal/academic/literary)

Baadhi ya gharama, kwa mfano nauli na chakula, zitalipwa na waandaaji.

Some expenses, for example transport and food, will be paid by the organizers.

Posho hiyo inalipia gharama mbili tu, yaani nauli na chakula.

That allowance covers only two expenses, namely transport and food.

The first sentence leaves room for other expenses: transport and food are examples. The second explicitly says mbili tu “only two,” and yaani identifies the complete intended pair. The noun-class agreement continues independently: class 10 gharama controls zitalipwa.

💡
Use a set test. If the item is one member among possible others, choose kwa mfano. If the second span fixes the intended meaning or complete reference of the first, choose yaani.

Kwa mfano introduces evidence or illustration

Kwa mfano can open a sentence, interrupt a clause parenthetically, or follow a general claim. Its example should genuinely belong to the category and help the current argument.

Miji mingi imeboresha miundombinu ya usafiri wa umma. Kwa mfano, Dodoma imepanua vituo kadhaa vya mabasi.

Many cities have improved public-transport infrastructure. For example, Dodoma has enlarged several bus stations.

Tunahitaji matunda yanayodumu kwa muda mrefu, kwa mfano machungwa na ndimu.

We need fruit that keeps for a long time, for example oranges and limes.

Sentence-initial Kwa mfano, normally takes a comma in careful writing. A parenthetical example can be enclosed with commas. If the example is long enough to contain several clauses, a new sentence is easier to process.

An example supports but does not prove a universal claim. One expanded bus station cannot by itself establish what all cities have done. In (academic) prose, the surrounding claim should match the evidence's real scope.

Yaani specifies, defines and repairs

Yaani often means “that is/namely/I mean.” It may define a term, identify the exact referent, or correct a word during live speech.

Ofisi itatumia ratiba ya mzunguko, yaani kila timu itabadilisha zamu baada ya wiki moja.

The office will use a rotating schedule, that is, each team will change shifts after one week.

Wajumbe watatu, yaani Amina, Juma na Rehema, watasaini hati hiyo.

Three members, namely Amina, Juma, and Rehema, will sign that document.

The first gives an explanatory definition. The second exhaustively specifies the three people. In spontaneous (informal) speech, yaani also introduces self-repair:

Tutakutana Ijumaa—yaani, samahani, Jumamosi asubuhi.

We'll meet on Friday—I mean, sorry, Saturday morning.

The corrected day replaces the abandoned one. Edited prose should normally delete the false start; a transcript preserves it because the repair itself belongs to the interaction. The neighboring reformulation guide treats self-repair and deliberate paraphrase in depth.

A connected paragraph

Kituo kinahitaji vifaa vya dharura, kwa mfano dawa za huduma ya kwanza na tochi. Vifaa hivyo vitahifadhiwa sehemu moja, yaani kwenye kabati lililo karibu na mapokezi. Kabati hilo litafungwa, lakini wauguzi wa zamu watakuwa na funguo.

The center needs emergency supplies, for example first-aid medicines and flashlights. Those supplies will be stored in one place, namely in the cabinet near reception. That cabinet will be locked, but the nurses on duty will have keys.

The first marker moves from category to instances. Demonstrative vifaa hivyo then resumes the example set with class 8 agreement. Yaani identifies the exact location intended by sehemu moja. Finally, kabati hilo continues the newly introduced class 5 referent. Free markers, demonstratives and concord jointly build cohesion.

Neither kwa mfano nor yaani replaces a finite verb. The example clause Dodoma imepanua... carries its own class 9 subject marker i- and perfect -me-; the specifying relative lililo... agrees with kabati.

Spoken choice and formal written choice

In conversation, yaani can make a broad description immediately usable:

— Unaposema tuje mapema, unamaanisha nini? — Yaani, mfike kabla ya saa mbili ili msajiliwe.

— When you say we should come early, what do you mean? — I mean, arrive before eight so that you can register.

In a (formal) instruction, the writer removes the conversational question and states the specification directly:

Washiriki wanapaswa kukamilisha usajili mapema; yaani, kabla ya saa mbili asubuhi.

Participants must complete registration early; that is, before eight in the morning.

For an example in a formal report, kwa mfano is fully appropriate. Mathalani is a more elevated alternative but should not be repeated merely to sound academic.

Hatua kadhaa zinaweza kupunguza matumizi ya umeme; mathalani, taasisi zinaweza kuzima taa katika vyumba visivyotumika.

Several measures can reduce electricity use; for instance, institutions can switch off lights in rooms that are not being used.

Exemplification is not cause, result or reformulation

Compare the questions answered by three markers:

  • kwa mfano: Which instance illustrates the category?
  • yaani: What exactly does the first wording mean here?
  • kwa hiyo/hivyo: What consequence follows from the first proposition?

Barabara imefungwa, kwa hiyo mabasi yanapitia kijijini.

The road is closed, so buses are passing through the village.

The bus route is not an example or definition of the road closure; it is a result. See cause and result across discourse. Likewise, kwa maneno mengine should preserve the same central proposition in a new wording, whereas kwa mfano intentionally narrows to an instance.

💡
A discourse marker tells the reader what inferential operation to perform. Replacing it with a near English synonym can silently change an instance into an equivalence or a consequence.

Avoiding connector overload

English academic learners sometimes begin every sentence with “for example,” “that is,” or “in other words.” Swahili can continue a topic through agreement and demonstratives instead. After introducing vifaa, forms such as vifaa hivyo, vitahifadhiwa, and vinahitajika keep the referent active without another elaboration marker.

Use kwa mfano once at the point where the text moves from general to specific. Use yaani only where the second span genuinely fixes the first. A bare list after a colon can be enough in a table, label or compact (formal) document.

Common Mistakes

Treating one example as a full definition

❌ Usafiri wa umma, yaani basi moja la mjini, unahitaji kuboreshwa.

Misleading specification — one city bus does not exhaust the category of public transport.

✅ Usafiri wa umma, kwa mfano mabasi ya mjini, unahitaji kuboreshwa.

Public transport, for example city buses, needs to be improved.

Using kwa mfano for an exhaustive list

❌ Timu ina viongozi wawili tu, kwa mfano Asha na Omari.

Incorrect relation — the two named people are the complete set, not samples.

✅ Timu ina viongozi wawili tu, yaani Asha na Omari.

The team has only two leaders, namely Asha and Omari.

Introducing a consequence as an example

❌ Mfumo ulizimika. Kwa mfano, hatukuweza kutuma malipo.

Wrong relation — inability to send the payment resulted from the outage.

✅ Mfumo ulizimika; kwa hiyo, hatukuweza kutuma malipo.

The system went down; therefore, we could not send the payment.

Repeating yaani without a recoverable first formulation

❌ Yaani, tulifika. Yaani, tukaketi. Yaani, tukaanza.

Muddled discourse — none of the later clauses defines or repairs the preceding one.

✅ Tulifika, tukaketi, kisha tukaanza kujadili mpango.

We arrived, sat down, and then began discussing the plan.

Key Takeaways

  • Kwa mfano moves from a category or claim to one or more instances.
  • Yaani supplies the intended definition, exact specification or live repair.
  • Keep the scope of a claim no broader than the evidence introduced as an example.
  • Use concord and demonstratives to continue reference instead of repeating elaboration markers.
