Public-Domain Prose by Stevan Sremac

Stevan Sremac makes social geography audible. In Поп Ћира и поп Спира, relatively standard Ekavian narration surrounds dialogue shaped by Banat speech, local particles, contractions, honorifics, and contact vocabulary. The point is not to "repair" the characters but to learn which voice belongs to whom.

Source and Reading Policy

This page uses a complete short exchange from chapter 12 of the public-domain Wikisource transcription of Поп Ћира и поп Спира. The quoted layer retains the transcription's apostrophes, particles, internationalism термин, and character contractions. The online witness is not described here as Sremac's autograph or as a diplomatic first-edition facsimile.

The narrator's form, character speech, a modernized reading, and an English paraphrase are four separate objects. The first two belong to the passage; the modernization is a teaching aid.

💡
A regional literary voice is evidence about a character and setting, not a template for "more authentic" everyday Serbian. Recognize it precisely; imitate it only when you deliberately adopt that voice.

Complete Short Text and Idiomatic Translation

Persa hears a carriage and sends Erža to open the gate for her husband, pop Ćira.

— Ержа, о Ержа! — викну гђа Перса кад чу да стадоше кола пред капију — остави то пиле, ја ћу га очупати, па стрчи и отвори капију, ето нам милостивог господина с пута.

'Erža, Erža!' Mrs Persa called when she heard a carriage stop at the gate. 'Leave that chicken; I'll pluck it. Run down and open the gate—our gracious gentleman is back from his journey.'

Затутњила Ержа онако босонога, и отвори капију кроз која улазе кола, а у њима поп Ћира, сав прашан, у неком старом шеширу који је још ђаком купио.

Erža thundered off barefoot and opened the gate, through which the carriage came; in it sat pop Ćira, covered in dust and wearing an old hat he had bought back when he was a student.

— Добро дошли!

'Welcome home!'

— Боље вас наш’о — рече поп Ћира, скидајући се с кола.

'May I find you even better,' pop Ćira replied as he climbed down from the carriage.

Ја сам се мало подуже задрж’о на путу. Хе, ал’ шта му знаш; те ’ајд’ ово, ’ајд’ оно...

'I stayed away a little longer than expected. Ah, but what can you do—first this, then that…'

Еле, к’о што видиш, ост’о сам читава три дана преко термина.

'Anyway, as you can see, I ended up staying a full three days beyond the appointed time.'

То је оно што кажу: У град кад ’оћеш, а из града кад те пусте!

'It's like the saying goes: you go into town when you want, but you leave town when they let you!'

Пази, Ержа, полако... порцулан је, полупаће се! Целог сам пута им’о с њим главобољу.

'Careful, Erža, gently… it's porcelain; it'll get smashed! It gave me a headache the whole journey.'

The greeting response is translated idiomatically. Боље вас нашао is a traditional reply to Добро дошли, literally wishing to find the welcomers in an even better state. English normally uses thank you or simply omits the matching formula.

Line-by-Line Annotation

1. Narrator and character do not share one register

The narrator uses literary aorists викну, чу, стадоше, отвори to advance bounded events. He also uses the perfect је … купио for earlier background: the hat purchase predates the arrival. That tense contrast gives the scene depth. The witness's кроз која улазе кола does not show modern standard agreement: feminine singular капију would require кроз коју. Whether the mismatch originated with the author, an edition, or the transcription, preserve it only as part of the cited witness rather than imitating it in neutral prose.

Који је још ђаком купио has predicate instrumental ђаком, literally when/as a student. Contemporary neutral prose more often says:

Носио је стари шешир који је купио још док је био ђак.

He wore an old hat that he had bought while he was still a student.

That paraphrase expands the compressed temporal-predicative instrumental; it must not replace the source inside quotation marks.

2. Imperatives organize domestic action

Persa's sequence остави — стрчи — отвори consists of perfective imperatives: leave it, run down, open. Па joins successive actions. The clitic object га in ја ћу га очупати follows the future auxiliary in a natural cluster.

Ето нам милостивог господина uses presentative ето plus dative нам and genitive singular милостивог господина. That animate form is syncretic with accusative, but the presentative construction licenses the genitive. It theatrically announces the arriving husband. Милостиви господин is socially marked (historical/formal) here, not an everyday marital address.

3. Formulaic politeness has its own grammar

Добро дошли uses plural agreement. It may address several people, or one person respectfully with ви—as here. The response Боље вас наш’о contains contracted нашао and masculine singular agreement because pop Ćira speaks about himself.

In fully written contemporary standard Serbian:

Добро дошли! — Боље вас нашао!

Welcome! — Thank you; may I find you even better!

The formula survives, especially in hospitable or traditional settings, but the expanded response can sound warm and somewhat traditional rather than obligatory.

4. Particles create a spoken rhythm

Хе, ал’ шта му знаш; те ’ајд’ ово, ’ајд’ оно… еле does not describe a chain with precise lexical content. It manages stance and pacing.

ItemFunction hereRegister
хеsighing or reflective launchinformal/literary representation of speech
ал’contracted али, pivot to explanationinformal in this spelling
шта му знашresigned "what can you do/you never know"informal
те ’ајд’ ово, ’ајд’ оноcompresses a succession of errands or delayscolloquial
елеreturns to the main point: "anyway"regional/older conversational

Deleting these items leaves the facts intact but erases the persona. Translating each one as a separate English proposition creates nonsense.

5. Contraction is selective, not random

The apostrophes mark forms such as задрж’о, ал’, ’ајд’, к’о, ост’о, ’оћеш, им’о. They evoke spoken reduction: задржао, али, хајде, као, остао, хоћеш, имао. Sremac does not contract every possible vowel; the pattern belongs to a crafted literary voice.

Задржао сам се три дана дуже него што сам планирао.

I stayed three days longer than I had planned.

This is suitable neutral modern speech. Writing arbitrary apostrophes does not make Serbian more conversational.

Social Voice and Multilingual Banat

The name Ержа and contact vocabulary help place the scene in multilingual Vojvodina/Banat. Elsewhere in the novel Sremac uses German and Hungarian loans even more densely. Here термин is an internationalism meaning an appointed time or deadline; the word by itself is not proof of direct German borrowing. Преко термина is understandable but less neutral today than дуже него што је било предвиђено.

The narrator calls Persa гђа Перса, while the household's speech contains mock-elevated милостиви господин. Neither label alone tells us whether respect is sincere. Domestic hierarchy, playful exaggeration, and the subsequent complaint all matter. For the larger contact setting, see multilingual Vojvodina; for current title choices, see address and titles.

The proverb-like У град кад ’оћеш, а из града кад те пусте uses ellipsis: the understood predicate is something like идеш/уђеш in the first half and излазиш in the second. The contrast кад… а кад… turns a travel delay into worldly wisdom.

💡
For ellipsis, recover only what grammar and context require. Do not expand a compact saying into a detailed story that the words do not license.

Common Mistakes

Copying dialogue contractions into neutral prose

❌ У неутралном извештају морам писати баш онако како лик говори: „Ост’о сам преко термина.“

Incorrect—neutral reporting does not require reproducing a character's contractions.

✅ У извештају пишем: „Остао сам три дана дуже него што је планирано.“

In the report I write: 'I stayed three days longer than planned.'

Treating еле as a content word

❌ Реч „еле“ означава место или предмет.

Incorrect—here еле is a discourse particle that returns the speaker to his point.

✅ „Еле“ овде можемо парафразирати са „дакле“ или „углавном“.

Here, еле can be paraphrased with дакле or углавном: 'so/anyway.'

Losing respectful plural agreement

❌ Добро дошао, господине Персо!

Incorrect in this scene—Persa welcomes a man, pop Ćira, respectfully with plural дошли; the name and gender are also mismatched.

✅ Добро дошли, господине Ћиро!

Welcome, Mr Ćira!

Calling every marked form "wrong"

❌ Сремчев лик говори погрешно, па све облике треба исправити у цитату.

Incorrect editorial practice—the contractions and particles are deliberate features of the character's voice.

✅ Цитат чувам, а нормализацију обележавам као савремено читање.

I preserve the quotation and label normalization as a contemporary reading.

Key Takeaways

  • Keep the narrator's tense system separate from the characters' contracted speech.
  • Read particles such as хе, еле, and те ’ајд’ as discourse organization, not isolated propositions.
  • Respectful plural добро дошли coexists with a singular reply agreeing with the male speaker.
  • Label expansions and paraphrases; never pass them off as Sremac's wording.

Reuse Exercises

  1. Make two columns headed narrator and pop Ćira. Sort every finite verb and discourse particle from the passage into the relevant voice, then describe the register contrast.
  2. Expand every apostrophized form without changing the meaning. Read the expanded paragraph aloud and identify where rhythm or characterization changes.
  3. Retell the arrival in neutral contemporary Serbian using the perfect instead of the narrator's aorists. Preserve the sequence of actions and the respectful plural in the greeting.

Sremac's scene is not a bag of quaint spellings. Aspect moves the household, aorist foregrounds arrival, particles stage oral hesitation, and selective contraction places a socially recognizable voice inside standard literary narration.
