ter- Involuntary and Stative Voice: Aspect, Modality, and Negation in Malaysian Malay

The ter- form remains unchanged after aspect, modal, and negative particles: sudah terbuka, sedang terbuka, akan terjatuh, boleh terbaca, tidak terbaca, and belum terdengar. The particles precede the predicate and contribute scope; they do not turn ter- into a tense prefix.

The main difficulty is semantic compatibility. A result state combines naturally with masih or sudah, while progressive sedang can force a transition reading. An involuntary event resists commands because its subject lacks control. This page focuses on those interactions; the TAM order page gives the broader particle system.

Minimal sequence

MarkerClauseInterpretation
sudahPintunya sudah terbuka.the open result now holds
sedangPintunya sedang terbuka sedikit demi sedikit.the door is in the process of opening
akanSaya akan terjatuh jika tidak berpegang.a fall is predicted but unintended
bolehTulisan itu boleh terbaca jika imej dibesarkan.the writing may become legible
tidakTulisan itu tidak terbaca.the writing cannot be made out
belumSuaranya belum terdengar.the voice has not become audible yet

Pintunya sudah terbuka apabila kami tiba.

The door was already open when we arrived.

Akibat tiupan angin, pintunya sedang terbuka perlahan-lahan.

Because of the wind, the door is slowly opening.

Saya hampir terjatuh apabila bas berhenti secara mengejut.

I nearly fell when the bus stopped suddenly.

Dengan kanta pembesar, tulisan kecil itu boleh terbaca.

With a magnifying glass, that small writing can be made out.

Tulisan pada resit itu tidak terbaca kerana dakwatnya luntur.

The writing on the receipt is illegible because the ink has run.

Suaranya belum terdengar dari belakang pentas.

Her voice cannot yet be heard from backstage.

Hampir terjatuh is more idiomatic than heavily marked hampir akan terjatuh because hampir already supplies imminence. Use akan terjatuh when a condition or prediction independently motivates prospective akan.

Result states with sudah and masih

With state readings, sudah means the result has been reached; masih means it continues.

Tingkap itu sudah tertutup ketika hujan mula turun.

That window was already closed when the rain began.

Pintu belakang masih terbuka walaupun pejabat sudah kosong.

The back door is still open even though the office is empty.

Neither clause names an opening or closing agent. Compare eventive Tingkap itu sudah ditutup oleh pengawal, which asserts a completed closing action.

Experiential pernah combines with accidental or perceptual readings:

Saya sudah pernah terjatuh di laluan licin itu.

I have fallen on that slippery path before.

Bunyi seperti itu pernah terdengar dari arah bukit.

A sound like that has been heard from the direction of the hill before.

The first reports prior experience; the second reports previous audibility. Sudah pernah is possible when completion is relevant, but pernah alone often suffices.

💡
Ask whether ter- denotes a state, transition, accidental event, or capacity. The same particle can be natural with one reading and strained with another.

Progressive sedang and coerced change

A stable state does not normally need sedang. Pintu itu sedang terbuka can be interpreted dynamically as “is opening,” especially with perlahan-lahan, but for a continuing open state use masih terbuka.

Pintu automatik itu sedang terbuka ketika bekalan elektrik terputus.

The automatic door was opening when the electricity failed.

Pintu automatik itu masih terbuka selepas bekalan elektrik terputus.

The automatic door remained open after the electricity failed.

Likewise, sedang terdengar is possible when a sound is currently being heard, but plain terdengar or masih terdengar is often more natural. Progressive marking is not forbidden; it selects a temporally bounded perception.

Prospective and modal readings

Akan ter- predicts a state or involuntary event.

Pintu itu akan terbuka secara automatik apabila kad disentuhkan pada pengimbas.

The door will open automatically when the card touches the scanner.

Jika tidak berpegang pada susur tangan, awak mungkin akan terjatuh.

If you do not hold the handrail, you may fall.

Boleh with perceptibility can mean that a stimulus is capable of being perceived. Often plain dapat dibaca/didengar is a clearer neutral alternative.

Butang kecemasan itu boleh tertekan secara tidak sengaja jika penutupnya dibiarkan terbuka.

The emergency button may be pressed accidentally if its cover is left open.

Here boleh expresses possibility rather than ability: boleh tertekan means “may get pressed accidentally.” The nonvolitional subject is not exercising a skill.

tidak, belum, and scope

Tidak terbaca normally means illegible or unable to be read, whereas belum terbaca often means not yet encountered/read inadvertently or not yet legible in an unfolding situation.

Nama pengirim tidak terbaca pada sampul yang basah itu.

The sender's name is illegible on that wet envelope.

Bahagian akhir nota itu belum terbaca kerana masih ditutup oleh pelekat.

The final part of the note cannot yet be read because it is still covered by a sticker.

For deliberate unfinished reading, use belum dibaca or belum saya baca, not automatically belum terbaca.

Bukan contrasts a constituent: Bukan suaranya yang terdengar. Ordinary predicate negation uses tidak.

Jangan and the problem of control

Imperatives normally direct controllable actions, while accidental ter- explicitly reduces control. Jangan terjatuh! occurs as a warning or expression of concern (informal), not a literal guarantee that the addressee can choose not to fall.

Pegang susur tangan kuat-kuat supaya tidak terjatuh.

Hold the handrail firmly so that you do not fall.

This purpose clause is more precise than a bare prohibition. For a controllable act, choose the relevant active root: Jangan buka pintu itu, not jangan terbuka when ordering someone not to open it.

Jangan buka pintu itu sehingga pengawal tiba.

Do not open that door until the guard arrives.

Common Mistakes

1. Moving sudah after ter- predicate

❌ Pintunya terbuka sudah ketika kami tiba.

Incorrect neutral marker order—sudah precedes the predicate.

✅ Pintunya sudah terbuka ketika kami tiba di dewan.

The door was already open when we arrived at the hall.

2. Using sedang for a continuing state without a transition reading

❌ Pintu itu sedang terbuka sejak semalam.

Poor aspectual combination—a since-duration continuing state favors masih.

✅ Pintu itu masih terbuka sejak malam tadi.

That door has remained open since last night.

3. Using bukan for predicate negation

❌ Tulisan itu bukan terbaca dari jauh.

Incorrect ordinary predicate negation—use tidak.

✅ Tulisan itu tidak terbaca dari seberang jalan.

That writing cannot be read from across the road.

4. Confusing deliberate incomplete reading with abilitative ter-

❌ Buku itu belum terbaca oleh saya.

Poor neutral form for deliberate unfinished reading—use object voice.

✅ Buku itu belum saya baca kerana baru menerimanya.

I have not read that book yet because I only just received it.

5. Separating the prefix

❌ Suaranya belum ter dengar dari pentas.

Incorrect spelling—the prefix is attached.

✅ Suaranya belum terdengar dari bahagian belakang dewan.

Her voice cannot yet be heard from the back of the hall.

Key Takeaways

Particles precede the unchanged ter- predicate, but lexical aspect and control determine naturalness. Sudah/masih suit result states, sedang can coerce an unfolding transition, akan/mungkin project states or accidents, tidak negates ability/state, and belum marks a pending threshold. Commands usually recast an involuntary event as a controllable precaution.
