Choosing Voice Across a Discourse: Aspect, Modality, and Negation in Malaysian Malay

Aspect, modality, and negation do not replace voice. They form a layer before the selected predicate: Rina sudah membaca, Buku itu sedang dibaca Rina, and Buku itu belum saya baca retain actor, passive, and object voice respectively. The verb remains uninflected while particle order builds temporal and modal scope.

This page synthesizes particle placement across a discourse. The broader TAM ordering system and individual voice pages provide fuller inventories.

Marker position across voices

VoiceCompletedProgressiveNegative/pending
actorRina sudah membaca buku itu.Rina sedang membaca buku itu.Rina belum membaca buku itu.
di- passiveBuku itu sudah dibaca Rina.Buku itu sedang dibaca Rina.Buku itu tidak dibaca Rina.
objectBuku itu sudah saya baca.Buku itu sedang saya baca.Buku itu belum saya baca.

Rina sudah membaca buku itu sebelum kuliah bermula.

Rina had read that book before the lecture began.

Buku itu sedang dibaca Rina di meja di hujung bilik.

That book is being read by Rina at the table at the end of the room.

Buku itu belum saya baca kerana baru dipinjam pagi tadi.

I have not read that book yet because it was only borrowed this morning.

In object voice, the particle precedes the tightly ordered actor-pronoun + bare-verb unit: sudah saya baca, not neutral saya sudah baca after a patient pivot.

Minimal contrasts

Rina sudah pernah membaca buku itu ketika di universiti.

Rina had previously read that book at university.

Buku itu masih belum dibaca oleh pasukan penyunting.

That book still has not been read by the editorial team.

Buku itu boleh saya baca di bilik rujukan sahaja.

I may read that book only in the reference room.

Rina tidak membaca buku itu selepas menerima amaran.

Rina did not read that book after receiving the warning.

Buku itu belum dibaca oleh penilai kedua.

That book has not yet been read by the second reviewer.

Sudah pernah combines completion with prior experience; masih belum presents a pending event as continuing not to have occurred. For positive ongoing action, careful Malaysian Malay normally chooses masih dibaca or sedang dibaca according to the intended emphasis rather than stacking the near-redundant masih sedang. Boleh saya baca places permission over an object-voice event. Tidak denies; belum presents an event as pending.

💡
Choose voice first from discourse roles, then place the marker before the resulting predicate unit. The temporal particle does not license a different actor position.

A five-sentence actor-centered timeline

Rina sudah tiba di perpustakaan. Dia sedang mencari sebuah buku lama. Selepas menemukannya, Rina akan membaca buku itu di ruang khas. Dia mungkin menulis beberapa catatan. Namun, dia tidak akan membawa buku tersebut keluar.

Rina has arrived at the library. She is looking for an old book. After finding it, she will read it in the special room. She may write several notes. However, she will not take the book outside.

The particle sequence advances Rina through realized, ongoing, prospective, possible, and negated actions without changing actor voice.

The same timeline centered on the book

Buku lama itu sudah ditemukan oleh Rina. Buku tersebut sedang diperiksa oleh pustakawan. Selepas itu, buku itu akan dibaca di ruang khas. Beberapa halamannya mungkin akan difoto. Buku tersebut tidak akan dibawa keluar.

The old book has been found by Rina. It is being checked by the librarian. It will then be read in the special room. Several pages may be photographed. The book will not be taken outside.

Changing institutional agents support a passive topic chain. Mungkin akan difoto gives possibility scope over a prospective passive event.

A first-person object-voice timeline

Buku lama itu sudah saya temukan. Kandungannya sedang saya periksa. Buku itu akan saya baca di ruang khas. Beberapa tarikhnya mungkin saya catat. Namun, buku tersebut tidak akan saya bawa keluar.

I have found that old book. I am checking its contents. I will read it in the special room. I may note several dates. However, I will not take the book outside.

Object voice keeps saya adjacent to a bare verb. Akan saya baca and tidak akan saya bawa show the marker sequence outside that unit.

Scope contrasts

Tidak akan dibaca means “will not be read”; mungkin tidak dibaca means “may not be read.” Tidak boleh dibaca can mean cannot be read or must not be read, with context distinguishing inability and prohibition.

Tulisan itu tidak boleh dibaca kerana dakwatnya sudah pudar.

The writing cannot be read because its ink has faded.

Dokumen itu tidak boleh dibaca tanpa kebenaran pengarah.

That document must not be read without the director's permission.

Use tidak dapat for inability or dilarang for explicit prohibition when ambiguity matters.

Stativity and control

Progressive sedang suits dynamic events, not stable knowledge or possession. Maklumat itu sedang diketahui semua orang is poor for “everyone now knows”; use kini diketahui. Voice does not remove lexical-aspect restrictions.

Direct prohibitions require a controllable actor. Actor-oriented commands use jangan + root: Jangan baca buku itu. A patient-centered instruction can use passive or object voice:

Buku ini jangan dibawa keluar dari bilik rujukan.

This book must not be taken out of the reference room.

Buku ini jangan awak bawa pulang.

Do not take this book home. (conversation)

Bukan contrasts constituents: Bukan buku itu yang dibaca Rina. Ordinary verbal negation remains tidak.

Common Mistakes

1. Moving sudah after the verb

❌ Buku tersebut dibaca sudah oleh penilai kedua.

Incorrect particle position—sudah precedes the passive predicate.

✅ Buku itu sudah dibaca oleh Rina hingga tamat.

That book has been read through to the end by Rina.

2. Breaking the object-voice actor-verb unit

❌ Laporan itu saya sudah membaca.

Incorrect voice and order after the patient pivot.

✅ Buku itu sudah saya baca sebelum peperiksaan.

I had read that book before the examination.

3. Using bukan for event negation

❌ Rina bukan membaca buku itu.

Incorrect ordinary verbal negation—use tidak.

✅ Rina tidak membaca buku itu tanpa izin.

Rina does not read that book without permission.

4. Confusing tidak with belum

❌ Buku itu tidak saya baca lagi setakat hari ini.

Poor fit for a pending expected event—use belum.

✅ Buku itu belum saya baca setakat hari ini.

I have not read that book yet as of today.

5. Using progressive aspect with a stable state

❌ Fakta itu sedang diketahui oleh semua ahli.

Unnatural progressive stative reading.

✅ Fakta itu kini diketahui oleh semua ahli jawatankuasa.

That fact is now known to all committee members.

Key Takeaways

Particles precede the voice structure they scope over: sudah membaca, sedang dibaca, belum saya baca. Marker order expresses completion, continuation, prospect, possibility, and negation while the verb remains uninflected. Voice still follows discourse, and stativity/control still constrain progressive and imperative readings.
