A Malay bare root is chosen for several different reasons. Tidur and pergi are ordinary intransitive predicates; makan and minum are high-frequency transitive roots acceptable across registers; baca and tulis are roots in commands, informal actor-first clauses, and patient-first object voice. Choosing the form therefore requires lexical knowledge plus a decision about command force, register, and what the discourse treats as topical.
This page explains when each environment is useful. For participant diagnostics see bare-root arguments; marker scope and advanced extraction are covered separately.
Five reasons to choose a root
| Environment | Example | Why the root appears |
|---|---|---|
| lexical intransitive | Adik tidur. | tidur is the ordinary predicate |
| high-frequency transitive root | Kami makan nasi. | makan normally remains bare |
| imperative | Baca arahan ini. | the addressee is understood |
| informal actor clause | Saya baca surat itu. | conversational reduction/register |
| object voice | Surat itu saya baca. | definite patient is topical |
The identical string baca does not make these structures identical. In an imperative the subject is omitted; in informal Saya baca, saya is an actor-first subject; in Surat itu saya baca, the letter is the initial patient and saya is a preverbal object-voice actor.
Roots that remain neutral: makan, minum, tidur, pergi
Bare makan and minum are the ordinary Malaysian verbs in everyday and careful contexts. Prefixed memakan/meminum exist, but they are not obligatory formal upgrades.
Semua peserta makan tengah hari di dewan utama.
All participants eat lunch in the main hall.
Pesakit perlu minum air secukupnya selepas rawatan.
Patients need to drink enough water after treatment. (neutral/formal advice)
Memakan is especially natural in extended or formal combinations such as memakan masa “take time,” memakan kos “incur/consume cost,” or an emphasis on consuming something. Ordinary makan nasi does not become careless merely because meN- is absent.
Intransitive tidur and pergi also remain bare in neutral prose.
Kanak-kanak itu tidur awal kerana demam.
The child slept early because of a fever.
Pegawai tersebut pergi ke Putrajaya untuk menghadiri mesyuarat.
The officer went to Putrajaya to attend a meeting. (neutral/formal)
Forms such as menidur and memergi are not formal equivalents. Derived menidurkan means cause/put someone to sleep, and pemergian is a noun; valency and category change.
Commands favor roots
An imperative usually uses a root because the addressee is recoverable and the clause directs an action rather than asserting an actor-voice event.
Baca semua syarat sebelum menandatangani borang.
Read all the conditions before signing the form.
Tulis nombor telefon yang boleh dihubungi pada ruang ini.
Write a contactable telephone number in this field.
Makan ubat ini selepas sarapan dan minum banyak air.
Take this medicine after breakfast and drink plenty of water.
Formal instructions can still use root imperatives; formality is supplied through wording such as sila, impersonal passive, and document style. Do not add meN- merely because the instruction is printed.
Informal actor clauses versus careful actor voice
Bare baca/tulis are highly natural after an actor in casual Malaysian conversation. Careful narrative, academic, or administrative prose normally selects membaca/menulis.
Saya tengah baca berita pasal banjir tu.
I'm reading the news about that flood. (informal)
Dia tulis alamat saya atas kertas kecil.
She wrote my address on a small piece of paper. (informal)
Penyelidik membaca semua jawapan sebelum menulis laporan akhir.
The researcher reads all responses before writing the final report. (formal/academic)
This is a register alternation, not a truth-conditional difference. By contrast, memakan masa and menidurkan bayi show lexical or valency changes and cannot be reduced under the same stylistic rule.
Object voice: patient topicality
When a definite patient is already under discussion, object voice places it first and uses a root after a first- or second-person actor.
Buku itu sudah saya baca, tetapi belum saya pulangkan.
I have read that book, but I have not returned it yet.
Surat ini kamu tulis sendiri atau salin daripada contoh?
Did you write this letter yourself or copy it from a model?
Definiteness matters. Buku itu and surat ini are identifiable topics. An indefinite sebuah buku saya baca is possible only with special presentational or contrastive context; actor voice Saya membaca sebuah buku is the neutral way to introduce a new, nonspecific book.
Animacy does not prohibit object voice—an animate patient can be fronted—but discourse sensitivity rises because human participants are likely alternative topics. Ali saya jumpa semalam is widespread conversational object/topic order. Careful prose normally uses object voice Ali saya temui semalam if Ali remains topical, or actor voice Saya menemui Ali semalam if the speaker is topical. Standard Malaysian grammar does not normally use a di- passive with first-person saya as an oleh-agent.
Nearest alternatives are not interchangeable
For baca/tulis, compare:
| Construction | Example | Best discourse use |
|---|---|---|
| actor voice | Saya membaca laporan itu. | continues with my actions |
| object voice | Laporan itu saya baca. | continues with that report |
| di- passive | Laporan itu dibaca oleh pegawai. | patient-first, third-person/formal actor |
All are formally possible in suitable contexts. Selecting the least discourse-compatible one produces stiffness even if no word is morphologically ill-formed.

Dialogue
“Dah makan? Minum air dulu. Kalau penat, tidur sekejap. Esok kita pergi ke muzium; baca risalah tu, lepas tu tulis nota ringkas.”
‘Have you eaten? Have some water first. If you're tired, sleep for a while. Tomorrow we'll go to the museum; read that leaflet, then write brief notes.’ (informal dialogue/instructions)
Roots dominate because the dialogue combines high-frequency predicates, commands, and casual speech.
Formal itinerary
Peserta akan makan dan minum sebelum tidur, kemudian pergi ke muzium pada pagi berikutnya untuk membaca risalah dan menulis nota pemerhatian.
Participants will eat and drink before sleeping, then go to the museum the next morning to read leaflets and write observation notes. (formal itinerary)
Formal prose retains bare makan, minum, tidur, pergi but uses actor-oriented membaca/menulis. A global “formal means prefix every verb” rule would generate nonexistent forms.
Narrative with object continuity
Selepas makan dan minum, Hana tidur sebentar lalu pergi ke muzium; risalah yang diterimanya dibaca dengan teliti, dan semua butiran penting ditulis dalam buku nota.
After eating and drinking, Hana slept briefly and went to the museum; the leaflet she received was read carefully, and all important details were written in a notebook. (formal narrative)
The narrative shifts from Hana's bare intransitive activities to patient-centered passives once the leaflet and details become topical.
Common Mistakes
1. Prefixing every formal verb
❌ Peserta menidur sebelum memergi ke muzium.
Incorrect—tidur and pergi do not acquire these invented formal actor prefixes.
✅ Peserta tidur sebelum pergi ke muzium.
The participants sleep before going to the museum.
2. Using informal bare baca in academic prose
⚠️ Penyelidik baca semua jawapan sebelum analisis.
Conversational bare actor form in an unsuitable academic context.
✅ Penyelidik membaca semua jawapan sebelum membuat analisis.
The researcher reads all responses before conducting the analysis. (academic)
3. Adding meN- after an object-voice actor
❌ Laporan itu saya membaca semalam.
Incorrect—object voice excludes actor-voice meN-.
✅ Laporan kewangan itu saya baca malam tadi.
I read that financial report last night.
4. Fronting an indefinite patient without context
❌ Sebuah surat saya tulis.
Marked without a special contrast or presentational context.
✅ Saya menulis sebuah surat.
I wrote a letter.
5. Assuming memakan is the required careful form
❌ Semua ayat rasmi wajib menggunakan memakan dan bukan makan.
Incorrect—bare makan is standard across registers.
✅ Semua tetamu makan sebelum majlis bermula.
All guests eat before the ceremony begins.
Key Takeaways
Choose bare roots because of lexical convention, imperative force, conversational register, or object voice—not because Malay has an infinitive. Makan, minum, tidur, pergi remain bare in many formal contexts; actor-first baca/tulis are colloquial while membaca/menulis suit careful prose; patient-first Buku itu saya baca is standard object voice. Definiteness and topicality decide among otherwise possible perspectives.
