In careful Malaysian object voice, aspect, modal, and negative markers normally precede the pronoun–bare-verb unit: Buku itu sudah saya baca, Surat ini akan kami kirim, Apa yang boleh kamu lihat? The lexical verb remains unchanged and immediately follows its first- or second-person agent. Marker order builds scope; it does not copy English auxiliary placement.
This page treats marker placement and meaning only. Formation, argument diagnostics, discourse choice, and advanced register/extraction have their own series pages. The wider system is described under Malay marker order.
The careful neutral template
affected pivot + marker sequence + pronoun agent + bare voice stem
| Marker | Clause | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| sudah | Buku itu sudah saya baca. | the reading is realized/completed |
| sedang | Buku itu sedang saya baca. | the reading is in progress |
| akan | Surat ini akan kami kirim. | the sending is prospective |
| boleh | Surat ini boleh kami kirim. | sending is possible/permitted |
| tidak | Buku itu tidak saya baca. | the reading event is denied |
| belum | Buku itu belum saya baca. | the reading has not happened yet |
| jangan | Buku itu jangan kamu baca. | the addressee is prohibited from reading it |
The agent and verb are adjacent in this baseline: saya baca, kami kirim, kamu lihat. The verb has neither meN- nor di-, but lexical suffixes remain: akan kami masukkan, sudah saya bacakan.
Sudah and telah
Sudah presents the object-voice event as realized or completed. Telah occupies a similar position and is especially frequent in reports and formal prose (formal).
Buku itu sudah saya baca hingga halaman terakhir.
I have read that book through to the final page.
Semua aduan tersebut telah kami teliti sebelum keputusan dibuat.
We examined all those complaints before the decision was made. (formal)
Apa yang sudah kamu lakukan untuk membetulkan kesilapan itu?
What have you done to correct that mistake?
Sudah does not turn baca into a participle, and telah does not license actor membaca after a first-person agent in this object-voice order.
Sedang and ongoing processes
Sedang is natural when the event has internal duration.
Buku yang sedang saya baca itu mengandungi banyak istilah teknikal.
The book I am currently reading contains many technical terms.
Surat itu sedang kami terjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Melayu.
We are translating that letter into Malay.
Apa yang sedang kamu lihat pada skrin sebelah kanan?
What are you looking at on the right-hand screen?
The selected object remains pivot inside the relative or question. Sedang precedes the agent, while the bare stems baca, terjemahkan, and lihat remain immediately after it.
Progressive aspect is poor with stable states. Perkara itu sedang saya tahu does not naturally mean “I currently know that matter.” Use Perkara itu sudah saya ketahui or actor-centered Saya kini tahu perkara itu. The lexical event type constrains the particle even when its position is syntactically possible.
Two aspect markers
Compatible markers can combine, with the leftmost marker normally taking wider scope.
Novel itu sudah pernah saya baca ketika masih bersekolah.
I had read that novel before when I was still at school.
Surat tersebut masih belum kami kirim kerana alamatnya tidak lengkap.
We still have not sent that letter because its address is incomplete.
In sudah pernah saya baca, realized sudah scopes over prior experience pernah. In masih belum kami kirim, the “not yet” state continues. Pernah sudah saya baca and belum masih kami kirim do not preserve the standard scope simply by containing the same words.
For an ongoing action that continues, masih saya baca can mean “I am still reading it,” while explicit masih sedang saya baca is possible but heavy. Use both only when continuation of progress is contrastive.
Akan and prospective events
Akan precedes the agent–verb unit.
Surat ini akan kami kirim bersama-sama salinan kontrak pada hari Isnin.
We will send this letter together with a copy of the contract on Monday.
Keputusan itu akan saya umumkan selepas semua calon hadir.
I will announce the decision after all the candidates are present.
Apa yang akan kamu bawa untuk perjalanan selama tiga hari itu?
What will you bring for that three-day journey?
Future context can sometimes make akan unnecessary: Surat ini kami kirim esok is understandable. Akan explicitly marks prospect and preserves the formal sequence akan kami kirim.
Conversational Malaysian often has Surat ni kami akan kirim esok or Surat ni kami nak hantar esok (informal). These are topic-comment and colloquial alternatives, not the careful object-voice order generalized on this page.
Boleh and modal scope
Boleh may express ability, possibility, or permission. Context supplies the modal force.
Dokumen ini boleh anda muat turun melalui portal rasmi.
You can download this document through the official portal. (formal)
Buku itu boleh saya pinjam hingga hujung minggu?
May I borrow that book until the weekend?
Apa yang boleh kita ubah tanpa menjejaskan jadual asal?
What can we change without affecting the original schedule?
In a statement, boleh kami kirim may mean “we are able/permitted to send.” In a question, intonation and context can request permission. Add dapat for capability or dibenarkan for explicit permission when ambiguity matters.
Sequences such as mungkin akan kami kirim give possibility wider scope over the future event:
Surat tambahan itu mungkin akan kami kirim selepas menerima nasihat undang-undang.
We may send the additional letter after receiving legal advice. (formal)
Tidak and belum
Tidak negates occurrence. Belum means that occurrence has not happened up to the reference point and often remains expected.
Buku itu tidak saya baca kerana kandungannya tidak berkaitan dengan kajian.
I did not read that book because its content was unrelated to the research.
Buku itu belum saya baca kerana masih dipinjam oleh rakan.
I have not read that book yet because a friend still has it on loan.
Surat ini tidak akan kami kirim tanpa kelulusan pengerusi.
We will not send this letter without the chairperson's approval. (formal)
Apa yang belum kamu lihat dalam pameran ini?
What have you not yet seen in this exhibition?
In tidak akan kami kirim, negation scopes over the prospective event. Mungkin tidak kami kirim means it is possible that we will not send it. The ordering is meaningful.
Bukan contrasts a pivot or focused alternative
Ordinary event negation uses tidak, not bukan. Bukan rejects the object pivot or another focused constituent.
Bukan buku itu yang saya baca, tetapi laporan yang terletak di sebelahnya.
It was not that book that I read, but the report beside it.
Compare Buku itu tidak saya baca “I did not read that book.” The first corrects which item; the second denies the reading event for the stated item.
Jangan and control
In object voice, jangan precedes the second-person agent–verb unit.
Surat peribadi itu jangan kamu baca tanpa kebenaran pemiliknya.
Do not read that private letter without its owner's permission.
Maklumat ini jangan anda sebarkan sebelum kenyataan rasmi dikeluarkan.
Do not circulate this information before an official statement is issued. (formal)
The prohibition requires a controllable act. A stable state such as knowing does not fit jangan easily: Perkara itu jangan kamu tahu is not a natural command. Say Jangan beritahu dia perkara itu if the controllable action is telling, or Pastikan maklumat itu tidak diketahui umum in formal instructions.
Direct commands can instead abandon object voice: Jangan baca surat itu. Choose object voice when the protected object is already topical or contrastive.
Common Mistakes
1. Moving the marker between agent and verb
⚠️ Buku itu saya sedang baca di perpustakaan.
Colloquially heard, but not the careful neutral object-voice sequence.
✅ Buku itu sedang saya baca di perpustakaan daerah.
I am reading that book at the district library.
2. Adding meN- after a marker and pronoun
❌ Surat ini akan kami mengirim pada hari Isnin.
Incorrect voice mixture—the verb after kami is bare.
✅ Surat ini akan kami kirim pada hari Isnin melalui pos berdaftar.
We will send this letter on Monday by registered post.
3. Joining the particle to the agent
❌ Keputusan itu akansaya umumkan petang ini.
Incorrect spelling—akan and saya are separate words.
✅ Keputusan itu akan saya umumkan petang ini selepas mesyuarat.
I will announce the decision this afternoon after the meeting.
4. Using bukan for simple verbal negation
❌ Buku itu bukan saya baca semalam.
Incorrect for ordinary event negation; without a corrective contrast, use tidak.
✅ Buku itu tidak saya baca semalam kerana saya kurang sihat.
I did not read that book yesterday because I was unwell.
5. Using jangan with an uncontrollable state
❌ Rahsia itu jangan kamu tahu.
Unnatural prohibition—knowing is not directly controllable once the information is acquired.
✅ Rahsia itu jangan kamu beritahukan kepada sesiapa.
Do not tell that secret to anyone.
Key Takeaways
In careful object voice, markers precede the adjacent pronoun–bare-verb unit: sudah saya baca, sedang saya baca, akan kami kirim, boleh kamu lihat. Tidak denies an event, belum means not yet, bukan corrects a focused alternative, and jangan requires a controllable action. Colloquial marker placement exists but should not be mistaken for the neutral formal sequence.
