Verbs ending in -kan do not conjugate for time, completion, possibility, or negation. Separate particles precede the predicate: sudah membacakan, sedang memasukkan, akan membersihkan, boleh dibukakan, tidak memasukkan, and belum dibersihkan. The suffix remains attached because it belongs to the verb's valency, not to a tense form.
The full verb changes only when voice changes: actor voice memasukkan, passive dimasukkan, and object voice saya masukkan. In each, the temporal and modal layer is built outside the verb. This page focuses on those markers rather than the construction's formation, argument roles, discourse choice, or advanced extraction.
Minimal sequence
| Function | Clause | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| completed: sudah | Ibu sudah membacakan buku kepada anak. | The reading service is complete. |
| progressive: sedang | Dia sedang memasukkan kunci. | The caused-motion event is in progress. |
| prospective: akan | Pekerja akan membersihkan meja. | The cleaning is planned/predicted. |
| modal: boleh | Pintu boleh dibukakan untuk tetamu. | Opening for the guest is possible/permitted. |
| negative: tidak | Dia tidak memasukkan kunci itu. | The insertion did not occur. |
| not yet: belum | Meja belum dibersihkan. | The expected cleaning is pending. |
Ibu sudah membacakan buku itu kepada anak-anak.
The mother has read that book aloud to the children.
Dia sedang memasukkan kunci ke dalam lubang pada pintu pagar.
He is inserting the key into the hole in the gate.
Pekerja akan membersihkan meja selepas restoran ditutup.
The workers will clean the tables after the restaurant closes.
Pintu boleh dibukakan untuk tetamu selepas identiti mereka disahkan.
The door may be opened for guests after their identities are verified.
Dia tidak memasukkan kunci itu ke dalam sampul.
He did not put that key into the envelope.
Meja itu belum dibersihkan sejak pelanggan tadi beredar.
That table has not yet been cleaned since the previous customer left.
Completion and ongoing process
Sudah presents a caused or benefactive event as realized. Formal telah often fills the same preverbal slot in reports (formal).
Pegawai itu sudah memasukkan semua butiran ke dalam sistem.
The officer has entered all the details into the system.
Pihak penganjur telah menyediakan dan membersihkan ruang pameran.
The organizers have prepared and cleaned the exhibition space. (formal)
Sedang presents a dynamic process as unfolding. It scopes over the entire caused event, not merely the suffix.
Datuk sedang membacakan cerita kepada cucunya di ruang tamu.
Grandfather is reading a story aloud to his grandchild in the living room.
Kakitangan sedang membersihkan meja dan menyusun semula kerusi.
Staff are cleaning the tables and rearranging the chairs.
Multiple compatible aspect markers can occur:
Buku itu sudah pernah dibacakan kepada kumpulan murid yang lain.
That book has previously been read aloud to another group of pupils.
Data lama itu masih belum dimasukkan ke dalam pangkalan data baharu.
The old data still have not been entered into the new database.
Sudah pernah combines completion with prior experience. Masih belum presents a pending event as continuing not to have occurred. For an event in progress, careful Malaysian Malay normally uses sedang or masih according to the intended emphasis rather than stacking the near-redundant masih sedang.
Prospective and modal scope
Akan places the event after the reference time or presents it as projected.
Guru itu akan membacakan pengumuman selepas perhimpunan bermula.
The teacher will read the announcement aloud after the assembly begins.
The modal boleh can express ability, possibility, or permission. Context decides which force is active.
Fail ini boleh dimasukkan ke dalam folder yang sama.
This file can be put into the same folder.
Pintu itu hanya boleh dibukakan untuk kakitangan yang mempunyai pas keselamatan.
That door may only be opened for staff who have a security pass.
Sequences reveal relative scope:
Meja itu mungkin akan dibersihkan petang ini.
That table may be cleaned this afternoon.
Kesilapan tersebut mesti diperbetulkan sebelum laporan dihantar.
That error must be corrected before the report is sent.
The unchanged suffixed predicate follows the marker stack. See TAM marker order for broader combinations.
tidak and belum
Tidak negates the occurrence, truth, or applicability of the verbal event.
Petugas tidak membukakan pintu itu kerana penggera masih berbunyi.
The attendant did not open that door because the alarm was still sounding.
Nama pelanggan tidak dimasukkan ke dalam senarai awam.
The customer's name was not entered on the public list.
Belum means that the event has not occurred up to a reference point, normally with the prospect that it still may.
Ibu belum membacakan bahagian terakhir cerita itu.
The mother has not yet read the final part of that story aloud.
Pintu belakang belum dibukakan untuk para peserta.
The back door has not yet been opened for the participants.
Compare Meja itu tidak dibersihkan, which simply denies cleaning in the relevant period, with Meja itu belum dibersihkan, which presents it as pending.
Bukan instead rejects a noun phrase or focused constituent: Bukan meja itu yang dibersihkan, tetapi meja di luar. It is not the ordinary negator before membersihkan/dibersihkan.
jangan and control
Jangan gives a prohibition. In actor-oriented imperatives, the understood subject is the addressee and meN- is absent while -kan remains.
Jangan masukkan tangan ke dalam mesin yang sedang bergerak.
Do not put your hand into a machine that is moving.
Jangan bukakan pintu kepada orang yang tidak dikenali.
Do not open the door for strangers.
Passive prohibitions center the affected item and suppress a generic actor:
Bahan kimia ini jangan dimasukkan ke dalam bekas makanan.
This chemical must not be put into a food container.
The directive requires a controllable event. Some -kan forms are stative evaluations rather than deliberate actions. Keadaan itu membimbangkan means “That situation is worrying”; sedang membimbangkan is usually poor for a stable evaluation, and jangan dibimbangkan does not normally function as a simple command. Use semakin membimbangkan, jangan bimbang, or a more exact clause according to the intended meaning.
Voice-specific placement
The marker precedes the voice predicate in all three main patterns:
| Voice | Correct order |
|---|---|
| actor voice | Ali sudah memasukkan kunci itu. |
| di- passive | Kunci itu sudah dimasukkan oleh Ali. |
| object voice | Kunci itu sudah saya masukkan. |
In object voice, the actor pronoun remains immediately before the bare suffixed verb. Kunci itu saya sudah masukkan is heard in some discourse configurations, but neutral standard order places the aspect marker before the actor-verb unit: Kunci itu sudah saya masukkan.
Common Mistakes
1. Moving sudah after the predicate
❌ Ibu membacakan sudah buku itu kepada anak.
Incorrect marker position—sudah precedes the predicate.
✅ Ibu sudah membacakan buku itu kepada anak.
The mother has read that book aloud to the child.
2. Separating suffix or passive prefix
❌ Meja itu belum di bersih kan.
Incorrect spelling—the prefix, base, and suffix form one word.
✅ Meja itu belum dibersihkan oleh pekerja syif pagi.
That table has not yet been cleaned by the morning-shift worker.
3. Using bukan for verbal negation
❌ Dia bukan memasukkan kunci itu ke dalam beg.
Incorrect for ordinary event negation—use tidak.
✅ Dia tidak memasukkan kunci itu ke dalam beg.
He did not put that key into the bag.
4. Dropping causative -kan after a modal
❌ Dia boleh masuk kunci itu ke dalam lubang.
Incorrect transitive causative—masuk cannot take the moved key directly.
✅ Dia boleh memasukkan kunci itu ke dalam lubang.
He can insert that key into the hole.
5. Using tidak for an expected pending event
❌ Meja itu tidak dibersihkan lagi setakat pukul sembilan.
Poor fit for a pending event up to now—use belum.
✅ Meja itu belum dibersihkan setakat pukul sembilan pagi.
That table has not yet been cleaned as of nine in the morning.
Key Takeaways
Place sudah, sedang, akan, boleh, tidak, belum, and other markers before the unchanged -kan predicate. Voice changes memasukkan/dimasukkan/saya masukkan, but the valency suffix remains. Tidak denies an event, belum presents it as pending, and jangan requires an action an understood agent can control. Marker sequences contribute scope; they do not turn the Malay verb into an English-style conjugated form.
