-i Applicative Patterns: Aspect, Modality, and Negation in Malaysian Malay

Malay places aspect, modal, and negative particles before an unchanged applicative predicate. The four model forms—mengisi, mendatangi, menghadiahi, and menandai—do not acquire tense endings: separate sudah, sedang, akan, boleh, tidak, belum, and jangan build the temporal, modal, and negative interpretation. Here mengisi is formed from the root isi, whose final i is already present, rather than by adding a second -i; that morphological exception does not alter particle placement. Their order expresses scope rather than English-style auxiliary movement.

This page isolates marker placement and interpretation. The other four pages in the series handle formation, argument relations, discourse choice, and advanced extraction/register. The wider particle system appears in the marker-order guide.

The core preverbal positions

MarkerClauseCore interpretation
sudahPegawai sudah mengisi borang.the filling event is realized/completed
sedangPegawai sedang mengisi borang.the event is in progress
akanPegawai akan mendatangi rumah.the visit is prospective
bolehPegawai boleh mendatangi rumah.the visit is possible/permitted
tidakKelab tidak menghadiahi Rina sebuah buku.the gift event is negated
belumKelab belum menghadiahi Rina sebuah buku.the event has not occurred yet
janganJangan tandai halaman ini.the addressee is prohibited from marking it

The verb remains one word after every marker. Sudah mengisi contains two words; ditandai contains one passive verb. Do not insert particles inside a derived verb.

Sudah and sedang: realized versus ongoing

Sudah presents an event or result as realized. Sedang places a dynamic event inside its unfolding phase.

Pembantu penyelidik sudah mengisi semua ruangan wajib dalam borang tersebut.

The research assistant has filled in all the required fields on the form.

Pembantu penyelidik sedang mengisi bahagian terakhir ketika sistem tergendala.

The research assistant was filling in the final section when the system went down.

Penyunting sudah menandai halaman yang mengandungi rujukan tidak lengkap.

The editor has marked the pages containing incomplete references.

Penyunting sedang menandai halaman demi halaman dengan kod warna.

The editor is marking the pages one by one with colour codes.

The progressive is natural because filling and marking have internal duration. A completed-object phrase such as semua ruangan often strengthens the endpoint reading with sudah; sedang focuses the process before that endpoint.

Telah can replace sudah in formal reports (formal), while conversational tengah can replace sedang (informal). The construction remains unchanged.

Semua borang telah diisi oleh urus setia sebelum mesyuarat bermula.

All the forms had been filled in by the secretariat before the meeting began. (formal)

Dia tengah isi borang dekat kaunter depan.

He's filling in the form at the front counter. (informal)

The informal example uses colloquial bare isi after an understood conversational subject. Careful actor-first prose would retain sedang mengisi.

Two aspect markers in one sequence

Compatible markers can stack, with the leftmost marker taking wider scope.

Pegawai itu sudah pernah mendatangi rumah tersebut sebelum aduan baharu diterima.

The officer had visited that house before the new complaint was received.

Penyunting masih sedang menandai lampiran ketika penulis menghantar versi baharu.

The editor was still marking the appendix when the author sent a new version.

In sudah pernah mendatangi, realized sudah scopes over experiential pernah: at least one prior visit is established. In masih sedang menandai, continuative masih scopes over the ongoing event. The latter is explicit and somewhat heavy; use both when continued progress is contrastive, not merely to make the sentence sound more advanced.

Marker order is not freely reversible. Pernah sudah mendatangi does not express the same standard sequence, and English auxiliary order does not license it.

💡
Build outward from the lexical verb: first select mendatangi, then place the nearest aspect around the event, then add a wider marker if its scope is genuinely needed.

Akan and prospective interpretation

Akan places the event after the reference point or presents it as intended/predicted. It precedes either actor or passive voice.

Pasukan kesihatan akan mendatangi rumah-rumah yang terjejas pada hari Isnin.

The health team will visit the affected homes on Monday. (formal)

Rina akan dihadiahi sebuah komputer riba semasa majlis penutup.

Rina will be presented with a laptop during the closing ceremony.

Malay can also use a future time phrase without akan: Pasukan itu mendatangi rumah tersebut esok can be understood prospectively. Akan makes that stance explicit; it does not conjugate mendatangi.

In first-person object voice, a marker precedes the actor–verb sequence:

Borang ini akan saya isi selepas penyelia mengesahkan nombor rujukan.

I will fill in this form after the supervisor confirms the reference number.

Do not move akan after saya by analogy with English I will: Borang ini saya akan isi occurs in some speech patterns with contrastive topic interpretations, but the careful neutral object-voice sequence taught here is akan saya isi.

Boleh: ability, possibility, or permission

Boleh takes scope over the applicative event. Context determines whether it expresses ability, situational possibility, or permission.

Pemohon boleh mengisi borang itu melalui telefon bimbit.

Applicants can fill in the form using a mobile phone.

Pegawai hanya boleh mendatangi premis tersebut selepas waran diperoleh.

The officers may visit the premises only after a warrant has been obtained. (formal)

Halaman ini boleh ditandai dengan pensel, tetapi bukan dengan pen dakwat kekal.

This page may be marked in pencil, but not with permanent ink.

The modal does not replace voice morphology: boleh mendatangi remains actor voice; boleh ditandai remains passive. In object voice, boleh saya tandai? can be a permission question “may I mark it?”, while halaman ini boleh saya tandai presents the page as topic.

Tidak and belum: negative occurrence versus not yet

Tidak is the ordinary verbal negator. Belum says that the event has not occurred up to the reference point and normally leaves open a later occurrence.

Jawatankuasa tidak menghadiahi Rina buku itu kerana keputusan pertandingan dibatalkan.

The committee did not present Rina with the book because the competition result was cancelled.

Jawatankuasa belum menghadiahi Rina buku itu kerana majlis penutup ditangguhkan.

The committee has not yet presented Rina with the book because the closing ceremony was postponed.

Rumah di seberang sungai itu tidak didatangi pasukan pemeriksa semalam.

The house across the river was not visited by the inspection team yesterday.

Borang permohonan saya belum diisi sepenuhnya.

My application form has not yet been completely filled in.

The tidak sentence can close the event as a non-occurrence. Belum explicitly locates non-occurrence before an expected later boundary. English did not and has not yet provide approximate translations, but the Malay contrast is aspectual as well as negative.

Sequences further reveal scope:

Pasukan itu mungkin tidak akan mendatangi semua rumah sebelum malam.

The team may not visit every house before nightfall.

Here mungkin scopes over tidak akan mendatangi. Changing the order can change the interpretation or produce an unnatural sequence.

Jangan in prohibitions

Jangan normally addresses a controllable action. A compact direct command commonly uses the bare form; a full meN- form can also occur, especially in general or formal prohibitions.

Jangan tandai halaman asal dengan pen berdakwat merah.

Do not mark the original page with a red-ink pen.

Jangan isi ruangan ini jika anda tidak mempunyai nombor cukai.

Do not fill in this field if you do not have a tax number.

A passive prohibition is also possible when a sign or instruction centers the protected item:

Dokumen sulit ini jangan ditandai atau dilipat.

This confidential document must not be marked or folded. (formal instruction)

Jangan is infelicitous with a state that the addressee cannot control. A prohibition must construe the event as preventable.

Bukan contrasts a constituent

Do not use bukan as the ordinary negator immediately before an applicative verb. Use it to reject a noun phrase or focused alternative.

Bukan Rina yang dihadiahi buku itu, tetapi kakaknya.

It was not Rina who was presented with the book, but her older sister.

Ordinary event negation is Rina tidak dihadiahi buku itu. The first sentence contrasts recipients; the second denies the gift event as applying to Rina.

Control, boundedness, and stativity

Marker combinations must fit the event type. Jangan prefers controllable actions such as filling and marking. Sedang prefers events with an unfolding phase. It is natural with sedang mengisi borang and with a ceremonial process sedang menghadiahi para pemenang sijil penghargaan, but a single instantaneous presentation may be better described with baru sahaja menghadiahi “has just presented.”

Some lexicalized -i verbs are stative, such as mendiami rumah itu “occupy/live in that house.” Sedang mendiami is possible when temporary ongoing occupancy is deliberately foregrounded, but masih mendiami often fits a continuing state better. The suffix itself does not guarantee dynamicity.

💡
Check both grammar and event meaning. A particle may be positionally legal but pragmatically poor if the verb describes an uncontrolled state, an instantaneous boundary, or a permanent relation.

Common Mistakes

1. Moving an aspect marker after the verb

❌ Pegawai mengisi sedang borang itu.

Incorrect order—sedang precedes the complete verb phrase.

✅ Pegawai sedang mengisi borang itu di bilik temu duga.

The officer is filling in the form in the interview room.

2. Joining a marker to the verb

❌ Rina belumdihadiahi sebuah buku.

Incorrect spelling—belum must remain separate from dihadiahi.

✅ Rina belum dihadiahi sebuah buku oleh pihak penganjur.

Rina has not yet been presented with a book by the organizers.

3. Using bukan for ordinary verbal negation

❌ Penyunting bukan menandai halaman itu semalam.

Incorrect for simple event negation—use tidak.

✅ Penyunting tidak menandai halaman itu semalam kerana failnya rosak.

The editor did not mark that page yesterday because the file was corrupted.

4. Moving jangan after the verb

❌ Tandai jangan halaman ini dengan pen kekal.

Incorrect order—jangan must precede the prohibited predicate.

✅ Jangan tandai halaman ini dengan pen kekal.

Do not mark this page with a permanent pen.

5. Treating belum as a plain past negator

❌ Belum bermaksud peristiwa itu tidak akan berlaku.

Incorrect—belum normally leaves open a later occurrence.

✅ Pasukan itu belum mendatangi rumah tersebut, tetapi lawatan dijadualkan esok.

The team has not yet visited the house, but the visit is scheduled for tomorrow.

Key Takeaways

Place sudah, sedang, akan, boleh, tidak, and belum before the unchanged applicative predicate. Compact commands normally use a bare form after jangan, while full meN- forms remain possible in general or formal prohibitions. Compatible particles can stack when their scope is clear. Tidak negates the event, belum means not yet, and bukan contrasts a constituent. Voice morphology stays attached, while aspect and modal markers remain separate.
