Choose a ber- predicate when the clause is chiefly about what one participant is doing or what state that participant is in, without presenting a separate affected object as central. Siti berbasikal is about Siti's activity; Siti menunggang basikal itu also names a definite bicycle; Basikal itu ditunggang oleh Siti makes that bicycle the discourse starting point. These clauses may describe similar scenes, but they answer different questions.
This page is about pragmatic choice. Argument diagnostics are treated under subjects and objects with ber-, while aspect, relative clauses, and general formation have separate pages.
The core discourse choice
| Construction | Clause is mainly about | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ber- intransitive/middle | participant's activity or state | Siti berbasikal. |
| meN- actor voice | actor acting on a separate patient | Siti menunggang basikal itu. |
| di- passive | patient and what happens to it | Basikal itu ditunggang oleh Siti. |
Siti berbasikal di taman setiap petang.
Siti cycles in the park every afternoon.
Siti menunggang basikal baharunya di taman.
Siti rides her new bicycle in the park.
Basikal baharu itu ditunggang oleh Siti buat kali pertama.
The new bicycle was ridden by Siti for the first time.
The ber- clause suppresses the need to identify a particular bicycle. Actor voice licenses one as a direct object. Passive voice is natural only when that bicycle is sufficiently salient to become the topic. Formal possibility does not make all three equally appropriate in the same conversation.
Walking: activity without a patient
Berjalan profiles motion or functioning, not action on an object. It suits answers to Apa yang mereka buat? “What are they doing?” or Bagaimana mereka ke sana? “How did they get there?”
Kami berjalan ke stesen kerana jalan raya terlalu sesak.
We walked to the station because the road was too congested.
Mesin itu kembali berjalan selepas fiusnya diganti.
The machine started running again after its fuse was replaced.
There is no direct patient to promote. If discourse needs a route as an affected or traversed entity, Malay chooses another lexical frame: Kami melalui lorong itu “We went through that lane”; passive Lorong itu dilalui oleh ratusan peserta makes the route topical. Do not manufacture diberjalan as a passive partner of berjalan.
Clothing and shaving: whole-participant versus affected part
Berpakaian presents the subject's dressed state or manner of dress. Memakai selects clothing as a separate object, and dipakai foregrounds the garment.
Semua petugas berpakaian kemas semasa menerima tetamu.
All staff are smartly dressed while receiving guests.
Semua petugas memakai jaket keselamatan berwarna jingga.
All staff wear orange safety jackets.
Jaket keselamatan itu dipakai ketika memasuki tapak bina.
The safety jacket is worn when entering the construction site.
Definiteness contributes to the choice. Berpakaian kemas needs no identifiable garment; memakai jaket itu can select one definite jacket. Animacy also matters: the subject of ordinary berpakaian is a person or person-like being capable of bearing clothing.
Bercukur similarly packages a self-directed grooming routine. When a body part or another person becomes a separate affected participant, use a transitive verb.
Rizal bercukur sebelum menghadiri temu duga.
Rizal shaved before attending the interview.
Rizal mencukur janggutnya sebelum menghadiri temu duga.
Rizal shaved his beard before attending the interview.
The first presents Rizal's routine; the second makes janggutnya available for further description. If a barber shaves Rizal, Rizal dicukur oleh tukang gunting is possible but describes an externally caused event, not the same self-directed construal as Rizal bercukur.
Reciprocity and topicality with bersalaman
Bersalaman presents participants symmetrically as engaging in a mutual greeting. A coordinated or plural subject avoids choosing one as the actor over the other.
Kedua-dua calon bersalaman selepas sesi debat tamat.
The two candidates shook hands after the debate ended.
Actor voice menyalami makes one participant the actor and the other its object; passive disalami makes the greeted participant topical.
Ketua pasukan tuan rumah menyalami setiap pemain lawan.
The home-team captain greeted each opposing player with a handshake.
Setiap pemain lawan disalami oleh ketua pasukan tuan rumah.
Each opposing player was greeted with a handshake by the home-team captain.
Animacy and number help license the reciprocal. Mereka bersalaman is complete because the plural subject supplies the co-participants. Azmi bersalaman dengan Ravi supplies the partner in a dengan phrase. Choose the transitive alternatives when discourse deliberately follows one side of a sequence of greetings.
One community event in three genres
The same charity cycling event is framed differently by genre. The five predicates remain possible, but the amount of context and the choice of topic change.
Dialogue
“Awak dah bercukur dan pakai baju sukan? Jom berbasikal ke dataran, kemudian kita berjalan ke pentas dan bersalaman dengan penganjur.”
‘Have you shaved and put on your sports clothes? Let's cycle to the square, then we'll walk to the stage and shake hands with the organizer.’ (informal dialogue)
The dialogue omits information both speakers share and keeps their preparation and activity topical. Colloquial pakai baju sukan contrasts with the neutral/formal berpakaian sukan used in the news version, while jom and dah explicitly mark the informal register.
News sentence
Peserta yang berpakaian sukan berbasikal sejauh dua puluh kilometer sebelum berjalan ke pentas untuk bersalaman dengan penganjur program.
Participants dressed in sportswear cycled twenty kilometers before walking to the stage to shake hands with the program organizer. (news style)
The news sentence introduces peserta as a stable plural topic. The bicycle, clothing items, and hands are not newsworthy patients, so intransitive and reciprocal choices keep the sentence economical.
Narrative
Selepas bercukur dan berpakaian, Farid berbasikal merentas bandar, berjalan perlahan ke pentas, lalu bersalaman dengan pengerusi yang menunggunya.
After shaving and getting dressed, Farid cycled across town, walked slowly to the stage, and then shook hands with the chairperson waiting for him. (narrative)
The narrative tracks Farid through a chain of actions. Repeating a transitive patient for every event would interrupt that participant-centered flow.
When not to choose ber-
Do not choose ber- merely because the subject is animate or the English verb lacks an object. Lexical convention controls which roots form established predicates. Do not choose it when a definite affected entity is central, when an external actor must be expressed, or when the intended verb has a different valency.
Pekerja itu menutup pintu utama.
The worker closed the main door.
Here pintu utama is a real affected object. No ber- paraphrase preserves that exact event structure. Likewise, berpakaian “be dressed/wear clothes” cannot replace memakaikan jaket kepada kanak-kanak “put a jacket on the child,” which adds an external dresser.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating the passive-looking English translation as Malay passive
❌ Mira dipakaian seragam ketika bertugas.
Incorrect—‘is dressed’ as a state uses berpakaian, not this invented passive.
✅ Mira berpakaian seragam ketika bertugas.
Mira is in uniform while on duty.
2. Adding a definite bicycle as an object of berbasikal
❌ Siti berbasikal basikal baharu itu di taman.
Incorrect—berbasikal does not take the bicycle as a direct object.
✅ Siti menunggang basikal baharu itu di taman.
Siti rides that new bicycle in the park.
3. Choosing reciprocal voice when one-sided action is topical
❌ Pengerusi bersalaman setiap tetamu seorang demi seorang.
Wrong frame—the intended sequence selects each guest as an object.
✅ Pengerusi menyalami setiap tetamu seorang demi seorang.
The chairperson greeted every guest with a handshake one by one.
4. Naming an external agent after bercukur
❌ Rizal bercukur oleh tukang gunting itu.
Incorrect—bercukur does not license a passive oleh-agent.
✅ Janggut Rizal dicukur oleh tukang gunting itu.
Rizal's beard was shaved by that barber.
5. Assuming a formally possible paraphrase has the same focus
⚠️ Basikal itu ditunggang oleh Siti setiap petang.
Grammatical, but pragmatically heavy without a previously salient bicycle.
✅ Siti berbasikal setiap petang.
Siti cycles every afternoon.
Key Takeaways
Choose ber- when discourse follows a participant's activity, state, self-directed routine, or reciprocal involvement and does not need a separate patient. Choose meN- actor voice when an actor acts on an identifiable object, and di- passive when that object is topical. Definiteness, animacy, number, and what the discourse continues tracking all matter; grammatically possible alternatives are not pragmatically interchangeable.
