The root temu rarely serves as the ordinary free verb “meet.” Its family partitions several event types: bertemu describes an encounter, menemui takes a person or encountered entity as its object, menemukan highlights discovery, and mempertemukan causes people or ideas to meet. Passive ditemukan centers a discovery, while pertemuan names a meeting or encounter.
English meet and find overlap misleadingly with this network. A meeting is mutual, a visit directs an actor toward someone, a discovery brings an unknown object into knowledge, and a mediator can cause two parties to meet. Malay morphology makes those viewpoints visible. See the voice and valency system for the general affix rules.
Family map
| Form | Usual frame | Core use |
|---|---|---|
| temu | mainly in established compounds | meeting/encounter root |
| bertemu | participant + bertemu (dengan + co-participant) | meet, encounter one another |
| menemui | actor + menemui + person/entity | meet, visit, go to see; encounter/find |
| menemukan | discoverer + menemukan + finding | find, discover, establish a result |
| ditemui/ditemukan | finding + passive verb | be found/discovered |
| mempertemukan | causer + mempertemukan + parties | bring together, cause to meet |
| pertemuan | noun | meeting, encounter |
There is real overlap between menemui and menemukan, and usage varies across the Malay-speaking region. Malaysian Malay frequently uses menemui/ditemui for people and concrete things found, while menemukan/ditemukan is especially comfortable for discoveries, findings, and results in careful prose.

| Context | Malay | Meaning source |
|---|---|---|
| habit | Saya bertemu dengannya setiap minggu. | setiap minggu |
| past | Dia bertemu dengannya semalam. | semalam |
| progressive | Mereka sedang bertemu. | sedang |
| future | Kami akan bertemu esok. | akan + esok |
Saya bertemu dengan rakan lama di stesen kereta api semalam.
I met an old friend at the railway station yesterday.
Kami akan bertemu semula selepas cuti sekolah.
We will meet again after the school holidays.
No ending on bertemu means met or meets. Bare temu is not an infinitive; it is a bound or compound-forming root in most current usage.
temu in established compounds
Learn root compounds as lexical units. Temu janji is an appointment, temu bual an interview or structured conversation, temu duga a selection interview, and temu ramah an interview or friendly meeting.
Saya ada temu janji dengan doktor gigi pada pukul tiga petang.
I have an appointment with the dentist at three in the afternoon.
Calon itu dipanggil menghadiri temu duga pada minggu hadapan.
The candidate was called for an interview next week.
These expressions are written as separate words under standard Malaysian spelling. Their meanings are conventional; do not use bare temu as the everyday replacement for bertemu.
bertemu: an encounter or reciprocal meeting
Bertemu profiles the occurrence of an encounter. A co-participant commonly follows dengan, though plural subjects can make the mutual relation clear without it.
Pengarah akan bertemu dengan wakil penduduk untuk membincangkan masalah banjir.
The director will meet residents' representatives to discuss the flooding problem.
Kedua-dua pasukan bertemu dalam perlawanan akhir malam ini.
The two teams meet in the final tonight.
Jalan kecil itu bertemu dengan jalan utama berhampiran jambatan.
That small road meets the main road near the bridge.
The last example shows that bertemu can describe lines, roads, or abstract paths converging; no social appointment is required.
menemui: directing an actor toward a person
Menemui + person means meet, visit, or go to see that person. The object is direct, without dengan.
Wartawan itu menemui keluarga mangsa sebelum menulis laporannya.
The journalist met the victim's family before writing her report.
Sila temui pegawai bertugas jika anda kehilangan kad akses.
Please see the duty officer if you lose your access card.
The imperative often appears as temui, not bare temu, because the suffix belongs to the lexical transitive form. Menemui can also report encountering or finding a concrete entity:
Pasukan penyelamat menemui sebuah beg berhampiran tebing sungai.
The rescue team found a bag near the riverbank.
Malaysian news writing very commonly uses passive ditemui in this concrete-discovery sense: mayat ditemui, kenderaan ditemui.
menemukan: discovery and an established result
Menemukan directs attention to something newly found or established. It is particularly natural for research findings, solutions, patterns, and discoveries in careful exposition.
Aina menemukan kunci yang hilang itu di bawah tempat duduk kereta.
Aina found the missing key under the car seat.
Penyelidik menemukan hubungan antara kualiti tidur dengan tahap tumpuan.
Researchers found a relationship between sleep quality and concentration levels. (academic)
Jurutera itu akhirnya menemukan penyelesaian kepada masalah sistem penyejukan.
The engineer finally found a solution to the cooling-system problem.
For an everyday lost object, menjumpai or menemui is also frequent in Malaysia. Do not assume that menemukan is always more correct merely because it resembles English find closely; genre and collocation decide.
ditemukan and ditemui
Passive ditemukan makes the result of discovery central, especially in academic, investigative, or formal description.
Corak yang sama ditemukan dalam ketiga-tiga set data.
The same pattern was found in all three data sets. (academic)
Tiada unsur kecuaian ditemukan dalam siasatan awal itu.
No element of negligence was found in the preliminary investigation. (formal)
For a person or concrete object located by searchers, Malaysian prose often favors ditemui.
Kanak-kanak yang sesat itu ditemui dalam keadaan selamat pada awal pagi.
The lost child was found safe early in the morning. (news)
Write passive ditemukan/ditemui solid. Locative di dalam hutan remains separate.
mempertemukan: causing a meeting
Mempertemukan adds a causer: a person, event, program, or process brings two or more parties together. The object normally contains the participants being connected.
Pegawai pengantara itu mempertemukan kedua-dua pihak untuk mencari penyelesaian.
The mediator brought the two parties together to seek a solution.
Program tersebut mempertemukan usahawan muda dengan pelabur tempatan.
The program connects young entrepreneurs with local investors.
The construction may be metaphorical: a novel can mempertemukan sejarah dengan imaginasi “bring history and imagination together.” The subject causes a relation rather than participating as an equal co-meeter.
pertemuan: event noun
Pertemuan names a meeting, encounter, or point of convergence. It may be planned or accidental.
Pertemuan antara kedua-dua menteri berlangsung selama sejam.
The meeting between the two ministers lasted an hour. (formal)
Pertemuan tidak sengaja itu menghidupkan semula persahabatan mereka.
That chance encounter revived their friendship.
For a routine organizational meeting, mesyuarat is often more specific. Pertemuan focuses on parties coming together, while mesyuarat implies a meeting conducted for business or deliberation.
Common Mistakes
1. Using bare temu as the ordinary verb
❌ Saya temu dengan rakan lama semalam.
Incorrect ordinary predicate—the reciprocal encounter uses bertemu.
✅ Saya bertemu dengan rakan lama semalam.
I met an old friend yesterday.
2. Adding dengan after transitive menemui
❌ Saya menemui dengan pegawai bertugas.
Incorrect transitive frame—menemui takes the person directly.
✅ Saya menemui pegawai bertugas untuk melaporkan kehilangan itu.
I met the duty officer to report the loss.
3. Omitting the causative form when a mediator brings parties together
❌ Pegawai itu bertemu kedua-dua pihak di meja rundingan.
Wrong participant structure for ‘brought together’—bertemu makes the officer a participant in a meeting.
✅ Pegawai itu mempertemukan kedua-dua pihak di meja rundingan.
The officer brought both parties together at the negotiating table.
4. Separating passive di-
❌ Dokumen itu di temui di dalam laci.
Incorrect spelling—the passive prefix is attached.
✅ Dokumen itu ditemui di dalam laci meja pengurus.
The document was found in the manager's desk drawer.
5. Writing established temu compounds solid
❌ Saya ada temujanji dengan doktor esok.
Incorrect standard spelling—the established compound is written as two words.
✅ Saya ada temu janji dengan doktor esok pagi.
I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow morning.
Key Takeaways
Use bertemu (dengan) for an encounter, menemui + person for meeting or visiting someone, and menemukan + finding when discovery is central. Malaysian usage often prefers ditemui for a concrete person or object found, while ditemukan suits formal findings. Mempertemukan adds a causer that brings parties together, and pertemuan names the event. Learn compounds such as temu janji separately.
