The lari family begins with self-directed motion: lari/berlari “run.” Derived melarikan adds caused movement, but its most frequent patterns are lexicalized: melarikan diri means flee or escape, and passive dilarikan ke hospital means be rushed to hospital. Nouns distinguish pelari “runner,” larian “run/race,” and pelarian “refugee/fugitive/flight,” depending on context.
The emergency meaning cannot be predicted merely by translating run. Morphology changes the participant structure, then usage conventionalizes particular destinations and situations. General formation is covered in the voice system; this page maps the established family.

| Context | Malay pattern | Meaning source |
|---|---|---|
| habit | Saya berlari setiap pagi. | setiap pagi |
| past | Dia berlari semalam. | semalam |
| plural progressive | Mereka sedang berlari. | sedang |
| future | Kami akan berlari esok. | akan + esok |
Saya berlari sejauh tiga kilometer setiap pagi sebelum bekerja.
I run three kilometers every morning before work.
Mereka sedang berlari ke tempat perlindungan kerana hujan semakin lebat.
They are running to the shelter because the rain is getting heavier.
Berlari does not gain endings equivalent to runs or ran. Aspect and time expressions remain separate: sudah berlari, sedang berlari, akan berlari.
lari and berlari
Both forms describe running. Bare lari is common in conversation, commands, sports commentary, and compounds. Berlari is the safe neutral form for a deliberate running activity in careful prose.
Lari ke pintu belakang dan panggil pengawal!
Run to the back door and call the guard!
Kanak-kanak itu berlari mengejar bola yang bergolek ke jalan.
The child ran after the ball that rolled into the road.
Lari dari rumah means run away from home. Metaphorically, lari daripada tanggungjawab means evade responsibility, and lari tajuk means stray from the subject (informal/educational).
Kita tidak boleh lari daripada tanggungjawab menjaga keselamatan pekerja.
We cannot evade the responsibility of protecting worker safety.
The root is not an infinitive. It appears because of lexical and register patterns, not because English has to run.
melarikan diri: the conventional escape construction
Melarikan diri literally organizes “cause oneself to get away” and conventionally means flee, escape, or abscond. The source or danger can follow dari/daripada.
Dua orang tahanan cuba melarikan diri melalui tingkap belakang.
Two detainees tried to escape through a rear window.
Penduduk sempat melarikan diri dari rumah sebelum api merebak.
The residents managed to flee the house before the fire spread.
Suspek dipercayai melarikan diri ke negeri jiran selepas kejadian itu.
The suspect is believed to have fled to a neighboring state after the incident. (news style)
Diri is integral to this conventional intransitive escape reading. Plain transitive melarikan seseorang means take that person away or abduct them, a very different participant structure.
melarikan a person or thing
Transitive melarikan presents an actor causing another participant or valuable object to be removed, often unlawfully or secretly.
Polis menahan seorang lelaki yang disyaki melarikan remaja tersebut.
Police detained a man suspected of abducting the teenager. (news style)
Bekas pekerja itu dituduh melarikan wang syarikat ke luar negara.
The former employee was accused of taking company funds abroad. (formal/news)
The form can therefore translate abduct, carry off, or spirit away. Ordinary transport uses membawa or menghantar; melarikan adds unauthorized, evasive, or urgent removal through its collocations.
dilarikan and the emergency-transport reading
Passive dilarikan centers the person moved. With ke hospital/klinik, it conventionally means rushed or taken urgently for treatment.
Pesakit itu dilarikan ke hospital selepas mengadu sakit dada.
The patient was rushed to hospital after complaining of chest pain.
Dua mangsa kemalangan dilarikan ke klinik berhampiran untuk rawatan awal.
Two accident victims were rushed to a nearby clinic for initial treatment. (news style)
Malaysian standard uses pesakit, not Indonesian pasien. The urgency comes from the conventional dilarikan ke hospital construction and event context, not a tense ending.
Outside emergency settings, dilarikan can mean abducted or carried off:
Kenderaan itu dipercayai dilarikan pada waktu malam.
The vehicle is believed to have been stolen and driven away at night. (news style)
Write passive dilarikan solid. Locative di hospital keeps di separate.
pelari, larian, and pelarian
Pelari names someone who runs, especially an athlete. Larian names the event, movement, or a run scored in cricket/baseball contexts.
Pelari muda itu memecahkan rekod kejohanan dalam acara 800 meter.
The young runner broke the championship record in the 800-meter event.
Larian amal tersebut berjaya mengumpulkan dana untuk perpustakaan desa.
The charity run successfully raised funds for the village library.
Pelarian requires careful social use. It can mean a person fleeing persecution or conflict, and in some contexts a fugitive. Legal status matters: pelarian, pemohon suaka, orang yang kehilangan tempat tinggal, and migran are not interchangeable.
Pertubuhan itu menyediakan kelas bahasa kepada pelarian yang baru tiba.
The organization provides language classes to newly arrived refugees.
Do not call every person who moves country a pelarian. Use the category supported by the person's situation and recognized terminology.
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting diri in the escape construction
❌ Suspek melarikan dari balai polis.
Incorrect for intransitive ‘escaped’—the conventional construction requires diri.
✅ Suspek melarikan diri dari balai polis sebelum subuh.
The suspect escaped from the police station before dawn.
2. Confusing escape with abduction
❌ Lelaki itu melarikan diri kanak-kanak tersebut.
Incorrect role structure—diri makes the subject the escapee and cannot also introduce an abducted object this way.
✅ Lelaki itu disyaki melarikan kanak-kanak tersebut dengan sebuah kereta.
The man is suspected of abducting the child in a car.
3. Using pelari for a refugee
❌ Agensi itu menyediakan tempat tinggal sementara untuk pelari perang.
Incorrect noun—a runner is pelari; a person fleeing war is a pelarian.
✅ Agensi itu menyediakan tempat tinggal sementara untuk pelarian perang.
The agency provides temporary accommodation for war refugees.
4. Copying Indonesian pasien
❌ Pasien itu dilarikan ke hospital selepas pengsan.
Non-Malaysian standard noun—use pesakit.
✅ Pesakit itu dilarikan ke hospital selepas pengsan di tempat kerja.
The patient was rushed to hospital after fainting at work.
5. Separating passive di-
❌ Mangsa itu di larikan ke klinik berdekatan.
Incorrect spelling—the passive prefix is attached.
✅ Mangsa itu dilarikan ke klinik berdekatan untuk diperiksa.
The victim was rushed to a nearby clinic for examination.
Key Takeaways
Use lari/berlari for running, melarikan diri for fleeing, and transitive melarikan + object for taking someone or something away. Dilarikan ke hospital is a conventional emergency-transport expression. Pelari is a runner, larian a running event, and pelarian a socially and legally specific noun for a refugee or fugitive. None of these forms changes for person or tense.
